Scottie’s world today

conversation in my headkill with kindness

Catch up note.  I have been sick since Sunday.   I thought it was from entertaining on Saturday and staying up far too late.   But it is far more than that.   Ron had not felt well for more than a week.  His symptoms were not as severe as mine are but they were mostly the same.   He had gotten over it so we did not worry.  I was not feeling well for a few days after Sunday but Wednesday was bad and yesterday was really bad and today is like yesterday.    Head full, slight headache, hot sweats, cold periods, fever, extreme nausea, vertigo, really tired, intermittent running nose that we thought that was allergies.    Yes we both now think I have Omicron or some version of Covid and that he did also.   Wednesday and yesterday spent most of the day in bed.  This morning got up early thinking I could do some news stories I had missed, but this is not working.  I am going to get as much done before I am forced back to bed.  The thing is in Florida it is really hard to get a Covid test and before I would get any result I would be over it.   So I will just quarantine at home just in case.  **  Took all day with many rest periods, I am now going back to bed.  I will try to get to comments tomorrow. **  Scottie

Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

The old white guy cartoonist pretended in the article that went with this cartoon that Biden should do this to protect black people and to increase the wages of black people.   Right.   Immigration has fallen for the last decade and it has not increased the wages of black people.  The real issue is that the brown people coming here do have more children right now than the white people already here.   So again the idea of a white majority or white ethnostate is what drives  these racist on immigration at the southern border.   Scottie

Wright and one other right wing media cartoonist keep trying to push Hillary into the limelight, to force the idea of Hillary running again to rile up their base.   They know that for 30 years the right wing media villainize Hillary and the right wing base is in a constant rage about her while the independents are sure she must have done something wrong even though she has never been found guilty of any Republican charge.  Hillary has not even suggested she is running nor that she thinks Joe should be replace.   Scottie

I think this must be a regional thing.   Yes we have a few things that are short like cat food.  But mostly it is just one brand name missing with plenty of that item by by a different supplier.  Our problem is the costs of stuff.   The price of meat is out of this world along with milk which is $5.48 a gallon here.   There are other things Ron comes home just all upset over the price of, but we are not yet scrounging for food as Tony Perkins claims due to Biden.

Bullshit!   What about the money for the defense department?  Tax cuts for the wealthy never get cost checked.   But anything helping the people or taking care of the decaying nation needs is called tax and spend liberalism.   The people are not buying the misleading talking point anymore.  Scottie

While Biden was not articulate in how he put it, he was right.  We know Putin has special operations people in Ukraine.  He has troops out of uniform helping the separatist.  Biden did not want to get in to a war over those handfuls of Russian troops.   However he has made it clear that if Putin tries to take any more of Ukrainian territory they will pay a huge price in retaliation.  Scottie

A new study released Wednesday found no big exodus of people leaving California for other states during the COVID pandemic. But California is still losing population to domestic migration, because fewer people than usual are moving in from other parts of the United States.  One of the top reasons people are leaving is housing prices.   However the satisfaction rate is higher in California than most red states.   Scottie

What the right wing hates is that main stream media is reporting the reality of Covid and the truth about the medical treatments / precautions.    They have to try to vilify Dr. Fauci because he disputes their lies.   As the mainstream media tells people the Covid truth the right wing media has to try to vilify them over this subject.  This one was so stupid I did not even bother to leave a comment on the site.   Scottie

Seriously? This is now how desperate Steve Kelley has become? This is how low he has to stoop when he can find nothing connected to reality?

As soon as I see someone throw out the name, “George Soros,” I know we are truly in the la-la-la cult extremist wacko zone. George Soros a Marxist?

George Soros came to the U.S. at age 15 as a Holocaust survivor with NOTHING and became a multi-billionaire INVESTMENT CAPITALIST. He comes as close as anything to representing a self-made CAPITALIST success story. He played your game and beat you at it.

Soros’ real crime? He had the NERVE to remember where he came from and seek to retain a system that helps those with less advantage, so as a result, this most successful INVESTMENT CAPITALIST gets labelled as a communist.

The difference between George Soros and the Koch brothers, Walton heirs, Mercer heirs, Mitt R-money, DeVos family, Steve Forbes, Bush family, and of course Donald Trump and his kids is that NONE OF THEM got rich by working hard — they inherited everything from Daddy.

SOROS is the only TRUE CAPITALIST among them. The rich elite TrumpubliCONs, who support tax giveaways for the few richest elites and massive corporate welfare, want SOCIALISM FOR THE RICH, and brutal market capitalism for everyone else.

If you support corporate Republican socialists and spit in the face of a true SELF-MADE CAPITALIST, then YOU ARE THE MARXIST.   Scottie

Parental control apps are outing kids to their parents & blocking them from LGBTQ resources

https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2022/01/parental-control-apps-blocking-kids-lgbtq-resources-outing-parents/

A recent study has found that 92% of parental control apps over-block websites, with the most commonly blocked content being those related to LGBTQ identities and sexual health.

The study, from Top10VPN, examined some of the most popular apps available on Google Play, as well as how they handle attempted access to certain websites popular in either the U.S. or U.K.

Some apps, it found, blocked kids from accessing LGBTQ resource websites like Stonewall, the Trevor Project, and It Gets Better, deeming them “adult content.”

What’s more, the study found that most of the apps notify parents when their kids attempt to access a blocked site, which could lead to dangerous situations in which kids are unknowingly outed to their families.

One app, Kaspersky Safekids, even blocked kids from using the search term “LGBTQ” on YouTube. Kaspersky Safekids also blocked searches of “homosexuality,” “safe sex,” “sexual abuse help,” “abortion,” “condom,” and “birth control pill.”

Despite blocking LGBTQ websites and search terms, some of the apps still permitted kids to access sites like OnlyFans, which actually does feature adult content, and allowed for search terms like “buy gun.”

And in only 10% of Top10VPN‘s tests, the parental control apps blocked websites known for the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories.

“The over-censorship of LGBTQ+ content is a well-documented feature of private tech companies’ attempts to filter ‘safe’ content, whether this is done by parental control apps or by platforms themselves,” said Siyang Wei, Policy Coordinator at the U.K.’s LGBT Foundation.

“This not only discriminates against LGBTQ+ content, but prevents young people from accessing information, services, and communities that could be vital to their wellbeing.”

Last year, anthropologist Mary L. Gray warned that artificial intelligence will “always fail LGBTQ people,” along with other marginalized groups. Gray said it will forever be up to human interference to ensure AI is not discriminatory.

“When AI whittles us down to one identity,” Gray said, “We can look at that and say no. I’m more than that.”

I do not understand the right wing media’s attempts to paint Joe Biden as an authoritarian strong man dictator while also portraying him as a confused tottering old man.   The fact is they just need to demonize and smear Biden so their followers will be enraged and vote for Republicans while they also are trying to discourage the left from voting.    To this cartoon, how is Biden being a strongman over security?  Maybe he is doing what they want with the border, which they claim he has thrown wide open?   He can not get Manchin and Sinema to do as he says, how is he a dictator?    Scottie

The right wing is terrified that people will realize how close the Republicans are to ending democracy.   So they must convince people that Jan 6th was nothing and not one elected official had anything to do with it.    The right is hoping to convince people that the only threat to the US is evil brown dark skinned people who practice a different religion than the good white Christians storming capitals and threatening everyone who has an opinion different than theirs.   Scottie

It’s hardly a wreck. Country is in fine shape. Most people are better off than a year ago.   The Qpublicans want their base to believe otherwise.   The previous guy left the train wreck behind like most Republicans do on exiting office, leaving it to adults to clean up the mess.

It’s almost been one year and Republicans have managed to blame Biden for things that happened long before he was President. Rand Paul all edged in questioning Fauci that all 800,000 American COVID deaths occurred during Biden’s presidency. He’s been blamed for all the unemployment that occurred from mid-2019 on.   He’s was handed a shit show by the last administration and has handled as well as could be expected.   Scottie

Would be great if the cartoonist would look into the situation before throwing out a cartoon. The money is going to independent credited assistance agencies that deal directly with the people. Not the Taliban government but the starving people. Very short sighted. While the right likes to pretend that Covid is not a problem so far just in the US nearly 900,000 have died from it in two years. In two years. That is a huge death toll. Omicron might not have the same death stats, but the long term damage to lungs and other organs is the same. Covid is not just get it and get better virus, it has long term health issues. That is the truth that people ignore at their own peril. Scottie

Dr Fauci has extensive education in the medical fields related to viruses and their spread in society. He has 36 years of public service using his knowledge to advice and protect the US population from viruses and diseases. Most of his critics do not have anywhere near his education level to even begin to understand what he can read and evaluate yet they think they are his equal in knowledge. Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

While I agree that some of us on the lower economic rungs need more government assistance, this cartoonist is one of the very far right wing that hammers Biden for any spending to help people.  So I have to ask why is the cartoonist trying to have it both ways, and the answer is just to have something to attack Biden with.   It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t match the other attacks on Biden, for the right wing the point is the attack.   Scottie

This cartoon shows how little the right cares about truth or reality.    Everything mentioned here is incorrect and a lie.   Not that the right wing cult followers care.   The puppy attack was proven false, the NIH did not pay for the part of the study with the puppies heads in flea tanks.  In fact the NIH tried hard to get that part of the study illuminated, backing out of the study when they were ignored.   He never lied to congress.   The people accusing him of that are not qualified to make that charge.   Oh yes they claim they are, just as Hannity and Tucker claim they are qualified to assess Covid treatments and vaccines, but they are not.   Scientists have reviewed the charges and the studies involved and they say it is not a gain of function advance the US part paid for.   Some one else may have done it, but the US did not pay for it as Rand Paul charges so he can fund raise off it.     The right wing media has ginned up outrage and attacks Dr. Fauci because they can not attack the science and protective measures he presents and advocates for.  If you can not attack the message, they want to kill the messenger.   Scottie

Great gravy the right wing would love that.   They are struggling to attack Biden on real issues.  Oh well they plan to steal the future elections anyway, and claim any election they lost were stolen from them.   In Florida the Republican lost and the Democrat won by a nearly 80% margin, yet the Republican refused to concede, and started claiming the election was rigged and stolen.   The Republican play book is to call any election they lose stolen and illegitimate.   For them and their members only Republicans can be elected fairly, only when they win is the election legitimate.  That is not democracy.  Scottie

Republicans declare war over race in public schools — and Black kids get left out of the discussion

This article was paid for by AlterNet subscribers. Not a subscriber? Try us and go ad-free for $1. Prefer to give a one-time tip? Click here.

Over the past year, Republicans have declared a war on how race and racism are addressed in public schools. This enmity was forefront in the gubernatorial election in Virginia, as well as battles over school boards across the country. In the past few months, at least seven states have banned so-called “critical race theory” from curricula. Over a dozen more are moving similar bans through state legislatures.

It would be naïve to expect more from the Republican Party. It requires an ongoing and bloody culture war to win. But there is another party with a role to play, who might be receptive to correction: the media.

Overall, the media’s coverage of the battle over education has been, let us say, “deeply problematic.” Reporting on the issue has overwhelmingly featured white parents describing the discomfort their children felt in discussions about racism.

Apparently, no one has thought it relevant to consider the experiences of Black children. This is regrettable as it’s impossible to cover a story about race in education while amplifying exclusively white voices.

How would the coverage change if the media approached the topic with an eye to informing citizens? To answer that question, consider just a few relevant data points.

First, Black kids experience racism before they enter school.

Research has shown that Black children are aware of racism usually before age five. Black kindergarteners are far more cognizant of their own race than their white counterparts. They are also keenly aware of racism, though they can’t always name the experience.

Black children’s awareness of racism is not illusory. It is based on empirically demonstrated lived experiences that are shaped by interactions with peers and teachers. White teachers are more likely to direct Black kids to special education and less likely to recommend them to gifted classes, even when their performance is at the same level as their white peers. Punishments for similar behaviors are more severe, resulting in Black children being systematically humiliated, in addition to being more frequently detained and suspended.

As they age through the school system, Black children report feeling more and more isolated. It’s not in their imagination. Even Black 5-year-olds are more likely to be described by their white teachers as angry or threatening than their white classmates. White teachers are more likely to perceive Black children as older than they are, which contributes to teachers responding to them in age-inappropriate ways. White children get comfort. Black children get punishment.

And I’ve only talked about preschool and kindergarten

Black children are often unfairly disadvantaged by their dialect and linguistic discrimination. When children enter primary school, they begin the process of learning to read. This requires mapping alphabetic visual symbols onto the sounds we use when we speak.

Many Black children are speakers of African American Vernacular English (AAVE), a dialect of our language that is just as rich and systematic as any other. However, because this dialect differs from the standard dialect, Black children who speak AAVE are told that they have a “home language” and a “school language.”

The former has no place in the classroom and the distinction between “home” and “school” inevitably plays into linguistic stereotypes of AAVE as somehow inferior or sloppy. White children are rarely told the dialect they speak is not befitting of a school environment, even when their dialects also differ from the standard.

Further, Black students who speak AAVE are given little help in making the bridge from their dialect to the “standard” demanded of them. The systematic differences in their dialect are not noted; these differences are more commonly just characterized as “wrong.” Consider how terribly confusing that must be for a 6-year-old child.

At this point, we’ve just talked about play and reading.

Despite the repeated falsehoods on the right, it is extremely rare for a curriculum to devote considerable attention to racism as a systemic and ever-present problem. Rather, the opposite is usually taught: that racism and racists are far, far away and that children are color-blind.

Combine such lessons — no racists here! — with Black children’s empirically demonstrated experiences of racism and it’s hard to imagine a more comprehensive and vicious form of gaslighting.

It is unsurprising many Black children develop chronic stress as a result of overt and covert racism. This chronic stress, in turn, has not just been linked to social, emotional and academic outcomes, but also to physical health. Black children experience elevated levels of cortisol throughout the school day, a physiological state that not only leaves children exhausted, but also impedes their ability to work.

Discrimination results in the prevalence of “stereotype threat” among Black children, adolescents and college students, such that if attention is brought to their race by a white educator, their performance on a task will decrease. Racism — from childhood to adulthood — is and will be a constant assault on both the body and mind.

The fact that Black people are so invisible from our public framing of the education debate shows just how intellectually impoverished the conversation is. They exist primarily as objects of discussion in the imagination of white Americans. A subject to debate, not people to listen to. This rendering of Black Americans as invisible is, perhaps, an argument for teaching more about racism in society, not less.

The GOP is waging a race war. We shouldn’t expect them to care about Black kids. We should, however, demand that the rest of us place Black children within the scope of our conversation about education.

Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes

Gary Varvel for Jan 17, 2022

History has shown that left to their desires the states will infringe on rights granted by the federal constitution. Yes the constitution is the founding document that provides the structure the US is built on. When rights that should be enjoyed by all are with held or restricted to some, the federal government must act to restore them. Plus some elections are federal elections and so should be standard across all states as with other interstate laws. Again that is provided for in the constitution. If you take out the right wing media attempts to stir up their base’s emotions you can see that this is something that has happened before and should happen again. The federal government is doing its job to address a problem across state lines and to ensure equal protection under the 14th amendment. Scottie

Bob Gorrell for Jan 17, 2022

Have these people seen Biden’s 36 years in government service?   He is a center right leaning politician who has more than once advocated cutting social security payment, assistance to the poor, being tough on crime, in favor of keeping cannabis illegal, and refusing to eliminate student debt even though some of these things helps the economy immensely.   Biden is no lefty, no progressive, but he is a corporate democrat.   Biden is beholden to the wealthy corporations and is willing to do mostly as they wish as they wish.   The reason Biden has been pushing for policies that the right wing media call progressive is they help both the country and the wealthy / big businesses.  But the right has to be against anything that Biden is for so they create a false scare tactic against even stuff they supported just a few years ago, such as voting rights reform.    History and truth are pesky things the right wing media is trying to avoid.  Scottie

A.F. Branco for Jan 16, 2022

According to 2019 FBI data, seven out of ten states with the highest per-capita rates of violent crime voted Republican in the 2020 election. In contrast, seven out of ten states with the lowest rates voted Democrat. However, the District of Columbia had the highest rate despite voting blue.  Mississippi has the highest murder rate, I hear it is a deep red state.   Facts matter.   The cartoon is just an attempt to play on fear and keep outrage going in the right wing base.   Scottie

https://repustar.com/fact-briefs/do-red-states-rank-higher-in-violent-crime-rates-than-blue-states

CRT is simply a dog whistle for the right so I will ignore its use here.  MLK’s words are as appropriate for today as they were back when he issued them. What is discouraging is the US has regressed on the gains in civil rights that King fought for. The US has not only stopped moving forward to eliminate pervasive racism but again has one political wing actively trying to promote it. He was right about the lack of support and work needed by moderate white people to change the discriminatory nature of the country. Scottie

Al Goodwyn Editorial Cartoons Comic Strip for January 17, 2022

Youngkin is dividing Virginia by pushing the false idea that CRT is being taught in its schools.   Goodwyn prefers the old Texas schoolbooks which told that the slaves were happy being told what to do.   White people afraid of facing the truth will be the downfall of this country.   Not a joke. A Virginia Republican legislator introduced a bill requiring public schools to teach students about the Lincoln – Douglass debates. Frederick Douglass.

Youngkin banned the teaching of Critical Race Theory (although it is not being taught).   Youngkin did not ban the teaching of Replacement Theory.  Make of it what you will.

Teachers now have to fear if they say anything critical about; slavery, Jim Crow, lynching they will be fired. If Little Johnny goes home and says Mr Jones said in history class that slaves were considered subhuman and often flogged and his Great, Great,Great, Great Grandfather got rich off their labor-Mr Jones is teaching CRT and should be fired.  Protecting our children from an imaginary CRT agenda, killing our children by lifting mask mandates during a lethal pandemic. Not the least bit divisive. Next we’ll have bodycams on teachers to prevent the spread of seditious knowledge.   Scottie

Lisa Benson Comic Strip for January 15, 2022

No surprise that Lisa Benson, in her typically uneducated ignorance of economic context, wants to focus on the single factor of inflation — the TEMPORARY imbalance of supply with regard to consumer demand — caused by Trump’s devastation of our trade policy, tariff policy, infrastructure neglect and mishandling of the pandemic instead of the long-range booming consumer confidence, strong wage growth, plummeting unemployment, the most jobs created in the first year of a new president EVER in history, investment and capital markets finishing the year at record highs and a strong economic outlook due to infrastructure gains.

The only flaw in Democratic economic policy is their failure to communicate the current strength of the economy and the fast pace of recovery that results in inflation as recovery and demand outpace supply.

But then, unlike conservatives, we don’t have our own 100% wholly-owned captive media like Faux “News,” NoiseMax or OAN, and even the supposedly “mainstream” media, while it does strive towards a standard of journalistic balance, is 100% owned — every single major media outlet, whether broadcast, cable or print — by very wealthy billionaires and corporations representing the special interests of the wealthiest elites who want to hang onto their economic power.

Price gouging and profit taking are a large cause of the current inflation.   Businesses are trying to make more money as they do at the cost of the people suffering.   This is win win for large or wealthy businesses.  While small businesses are going under more money for the large ones.   They get more money, more power, more help from the governments, the only ones getting less are the people.   Scottie

supply chain octipus

Businesses created the model that is the biggest contributor to this problem so they could make more profit.  In the old days where product and service meant more than profit manufacturers would have a supply of what they needed to make a product readily stored for use.   The makers of a item would stock the items parts in a warehouse.   the ones that make the parts would have a supply of their needs, all up and down the chain.   But in worshiping the god of more profit they got rid of the warehouses and extra inventory, instead going to a system of timed deliveries.   Works great if the deliveries are on time no delays.   But when there is a problem then the entire system shuts down.  Locally the grocery story nearest me me had empty shelves in some spots.  While other stores of their same company had those products with full shelves.   I checked.   Turned out the problem was a hold up in the shipments directed to their store and they had no back of the store storage to hold any amount of supply in.   That equaled empty shelves but more profit because when they built the store they did not need to add the cost of the storage area, nor the costs to maintain it, fill it, use it, so on.   The cult leader may be tRump but the long time god is profit at all costs.

“The clogged polling locations in metro Atlanta reflect an underlying pattern: the number of places to vote has shrunk statewide, with little recourse. Although the reduction in polling places has taken place across racial lines, it has primarily caused long lines in nonwhite neighborhoods where voter registration has surged and more residents cast ballots in person on Election Day.”

Fox News the media arm of the GQP, got caught using an image that is actually from a 2011 NPR story (photo #15) about residents fleeing the disaster area near the Fukushima nuclear power plant.  Yet their viewers claim to be the smartest most informed.   Scottie

At the hearing to again appoint him chairman of the FED, Jerome Powell admitted to Senator Warren that the high prices could be profit taking by companies.   They were raising prices and charging more because they could.   Inflation and profit taking / price gouging is world wide yet the right wing media hopes to pin it all on Biden.   I don’t buy it.   Scottie

If it is a federal election , it should be ” federalized “. What happened to the right-wing talking point that we should just let the free market work things out? Don’t pay attention to the fact that Republicans are making it harder for people to vote and giving themselves the power to easily overturn election results they don’t like. Gary Varvel for Jan 14, 2022

So the five Republican senators vs 1 Democratic one retiring means? Fact is members of both parties are either retiring, running for different offices, or have been redistricted out of their seat. This is nothing new nor unexpected. As of January 2022, 44 members of Congress—six members of the U.S. Senate and 38 members of the U.S. House—have announced they will not seek re-election. Twenty-nine members—six senators and 23 representatives—have announced their retirement. Five retiring Senate members are Republicans and one is a Democrat, and of the retiring House members, 18 are Democrats and five are Republicans. Fifteen U.S. House members are running for other offices. Four Republicans and four Democrats are seeking seats in the U.S. Senate, one Republican and two Democrats are running for governor, one Republican is running for secretary of state, one Democrat is running for mayor, and one Democrat and one Republican are running for attorney general. No U.S. Senate members are running for other offices. Scottie

Complete bullshit.   Try restricting voting places so people can not reach them and if they do they have wait in line times of 8 to 12 hours.   Try removing the places to get ID in areas of POC and making it as hard as possible to get one.   Try having one drop box in highly populated Democratic areas.   The fact is voter restrictions are happening and that is not a democracy.   In a democracy the people vote for the people they want in elective office, in the Republican way of governing the elected office holder allows only their supporters to vote.   Scottie

Steve Kelley Comic Strip for January 14, 2022

Is Steve Kelley so ignorant of history (or honest enough to be accurate as to historical context) that he does not understand how the parties reversed roles on social justice issues?

I will acknowledge the evils of my party’s past.

But today’s Democratic Party is…

Not the party of the KKKonfederacy

Not the party of George Wallace

Not the party of Bull Conner

.

and today’s TrumpubliQan cult is…

Not the party of Lincoln.

Not the party of Teddy Roosevelt.

Not the party of Eisenhower.

Not even the party of McCain or R-money.

The Democrats’ ugly racist PAST is the Republicans’ ugly racist PRESENT.

Once upon a time, the Democratic party was the conservative party that was pro-slavery, pro-racism and pro-anything that was bad for the American people, and the Republican party was the LIBERAL party of Lincoln.

Then some time went by, some things happened, and eventually, the parties switched ideological sides.

Only the trolls are dumb enough, or willingly ignorant enough to take your BS at face value.   Scottie

Chip Bok Comic Strip for January 14, 2022

The SCOTUS is pro corporate and profit while anti-government services for the public, and so they side with the GQP.   What the supreme court turned down was not mask mandates but mandating business vaccinations through OSHA.   Had congress or other means been used they would have been forced to agree with it.   Scottie
