Here’s a reminder aboutΒ the scene at Ole Miss:

There were hundreds of counter-protesters, in contrast to the few dozen pro-Palestine protesters. The scene evoked memories of the resistance to the civil rights struggle in the US south six decades earlier.

The counter-protesters included individuals waving American flags and Trump flags. At one point, they sang the American national anthem, drowning out the pro-Palestine group’s chants.

There were no arrests, but the actions of the counter-protesters – who shouted β€œFuck Joe Biden”, β€œWho’s your daddy?”, β€œUSA”, β€œHit the showers”, β€œYour nose is huge”, and included a white man making monkey noises at a Black woman – have been widely condemned on social media.

A video was posted on X Thursday of a group of counter-protestors at the University of Mississippi β€” or Ole Miss β€” shouting and making monkey noises towards a Black woman who was part of a group protesting the war in Gaza.

Another bystander at the university uploaded a video of the students shouting β€œLizzo! Lizzo! β€” in reference to the pop/hip-hop singer β€” and β€œf**k you fatass, f**k you bitch” to the same woman.

Republican Governor of Mississippi Tate Reeves posted on X that the group of counter-protestors β€œwarms my heart.” The shocking video earned praise from Republican legislator Rep. Mike Collins, who posted the video and wrote β€œOle Miss taking care of business.”
