Parental control apps are outing kids to their parents & blocking them from LGBTQ resources
A recent study has found that 92% of parental control apps over-block websites, with the most commonly blocked content being those related to LGBTQ identities and sexual health.
The study, from Top10VPN, examined some of the most popular apps available on Google Play, as well as how they handle attempted access to certain websites popular in either the U.S. or U.K.
Some apps, it found, blocked kids from accessing LGBTQ resource websites like Stonewall, the Trevor Project, and It Gets Better, deeming them “adult content.”
What’s more, the study found that most of the apps notify parents when their kids attempt to access a blocked site, which could lead to dangerous situations in which kids are unknowingly outed to their families.
One app, Kaspersky Safekids, even blocked kids from using the search term “LGBTQ” on YouTube. Kaspersky Safekids also blocked searches of “homosexuality,” “safe sex,” “sexual abuse help,” “abortion,” “condom,” and “birth control pill.”
Despite blocking LGBTQ websites and search terms, some of the apps still permitted kids to access sites like OnlyFans, which actually does feature adult content, and allowed for search terms like “buy gun.”
And in only 10% of Top10VPN‘s tests, the parental control apps blocked websites known for the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories.
“The over-censorship of LGBTQ+ content is a well-documented feature of private tech companies’ attempts to filter ‘safe’ content, whether this is done by parental control apps or by platforms themselves,” said Siyang Wei, Policy Coordinator at the U.K.’s LGBT Foundation.
“This not only discriminates against LGBTQ+ content, but prevents young people from accessing information, services, and communities that could be vital to their wellbeing.”
Last year, anthropologist Mary L. Gray warned that artificial intelligence will “always fail LGBTQ people,” along with other marginalized groups. Gray said it will forever be up to human interference to ensure AI is not discriminatory.
“When AI whittles us down to one identity,” Gray said, “We can look at that and say no. I’m more than that.”

One of the reasons that the roundup takes me so long each day is the distraction I get by arguing with the right wing cult members on the misleading right wing media cartoons. I have stopped replying to or addressing the cultist directly because they simply want to insult or deny reality. But as I look at the cartoon I go down and read the comments. The right wing misleading ones I create a comment, often researching the relevant subject. The replies to my efforts are mostly insulting reality denying crap. So I leave it there for those who read the cartoon comments. What I have found is I get a lot of up votes, a lot of likes by people who agree but have given up trying to fight the aggressive ignorance of the right. Scottie

I have been with my husband for 32 years. We are still sexually active thankfully. The government wont let us donate blood no matter the need because we are active homosexuals. It is outright bigotry. Yes they have tried to fudge it here and there, one was saying it was OK if you are not sexually active while the same doesn’t apply to straight people. It is bigotry. Other countries have corrected this, the US has not. I am angry over this openly bigot policy so I wont ever donate again. Misleading right wing media cartoons / memes
I do not understand the right wing media’s attempts to paint Joe Biden as an authoritarian strong man dictator while also portraying him as a confused tottering old man. The fact is they just need to demonize and smear Biden so their followers will be enraged and vote for Republicans while they also are trying to discourage the left from voting. To this cartoon, how is Biden being a strongman over security? Maybe he is doing what they want with the border, which they claim he has thrown wide open? He can not get Manchin and Sinema to do as he says, how is he a dictator? Scottie
The right wing is terrified that people will realize how close the Republicans are to ending democracy. So they must convince people that Jan 6th was nothing and not one elected official had anything to do with it. The right is hoping to convince people that the only threat to the US is evil brown dark skinned people who practice a different religion than the good white Christians storming capitals and threatening everyone who has an opinion different than theirs. Dr Fauci has extensive education in the medical fields related to viruses and their spread in society. He has 36 years of public service using his knowledge to advice and protect the US population from viruses and diseases. Most of his critics do not have anywhere near his education level to even begin to understand what he can read and evaluate yet they think they are his equal in knowledge. It is silly to think that watching Fox News or reading Breitbart makes you qualified to dispute or even disagree with Dr. Fauci’s assessment. President Biden has made sure vaccines are available for everyone in the USA. Mask mandates have been made difficult to impossible by Republican political hack judges on the Supreme Court. Deathsantis in Florida and other Governors in ‘Red’ states have all but guaranteed the death of many of their constituents. It’s deplorable that the Republicans do everything they can do to encourage their voters not to wear masks and get vaccinated, then have the audacity to blame Biden for the decisions they made? While I agree that some of us on the lower economic rungs need more government assistance, this cartoonist is one of the very far right wing that hammers Biden for any spending to help people. So I have to ask why is the cartoonist trying to have it both ways, and the answer is just to have something to attack Biden with. This cartoon shows how little the right cares about truth or reality. Everything mentioned here is incorrect and a lie. Not that the right wing cult followers care. The puppy attack was proven false, the NIH did not pay for the part of the study with the puppies heads in flea tanks. In fact the NIH tried hard to get that part of the study illuminated, backing out of the study when they were ignored. He never lied to congress. The people accusing him of that are not qualified to make that charge. Oh yes they claim they are, just as Hannity and Tucker claim they are qualified to assess Covid treatments and vaccines, but they are not. Scientists have reviewed the charges and the studies involved and they say it is not a gain of function advance the US part paid for. Some one else may have done it, but the US did not pay for it as Rand Paul charges so he can fund raise off it.
