I don’t understand why many people think that transgenderism is a new thing. We had an openly transgender woman mayor of a conservative rural district back in 1995. That’s 28 years ago. She became a Member of the New Zealand Parliament in 1999. Even back in the late 1960s another trans-woman became a well known celebrity in our capital city of Wellington. She was a drag performer, brothel keeper, anti-discrimination activist, would-be politician, human rights activist and HIV/AIDS activist. And might I add larger a than life personality, having met her on occasions in the early 1970s.
To anyone who is transphobic (or homophobic for that matter) may I suggest you make an effort to get to know a trans person (or a gay person). You’ll find that the way they experience and express their life is just as valid as your own – just different. Hate and fear comes from what is unknown. Don’t let fear through ignorance run your life.
