Neil deGrasse Tyson, The Trans Community, And “Rising To The Occasion”

Wow oh wow!  This is a great video and a must watch video if you support trans people.  I wouldn’t have expected a man of the Christian faith to come out for trans people but never would have expected them to do this that strongly and seriously.  I watched it twice to be sure I heard what I did.  After I post this I will watch it again.  I am not even sure how to post this in the labels.  Hugs and loves.  This is why I really like this Christian man.  Hugs

This is the comment I left on this post.  I wonder if he will reply.  Hugs

Hello Rev. I had only commented once before where I asked you if a caring loving atheist such as myself could find a place in your god’s paradise. You welcomed me and told me I did not have to believe in the supernatural but live a decent life helping others as I could, which I had said I did, you replied I was totally accepted by your god. I was honestly surprised by your answer. Since then I have followed your channel and often posted it to my blog. Most of my readers are not religious but all are caring wonderful people of different faiths, sexual orientations, and some are trans. But all have found wisdom in your videos. I thank you for this one. The trans community and trans kids are under heavy attack in the US. I suspect because it undermines the cis straight majority that has long ruled the US, but also driven by religious people who feel this allowing their children to be who they wee born to be, LGBTQ+ is an affront to their god they will be held to account for. Thank you, Hugs. Scottie

  1. Scottie, you shouldn’t be surprised by his response to you. Perhaps I should rephrase that. In all probability you wouldn’t be surprised by such a response if you lived in a truly liberal society. I live in a society where less than half the population identify as religious and less than a third identify as Christian, yet 90% of the population approves or highly approves of Christianity and all other major religions apart from Islam where it drops to 80%. Atheism and agnosticism also receive the same approval rating as the major religions. What I’m trying to say is inclusive societies don’t lend themselves to extremist perspectives where the only correct view is the one that you hold while everyone else is wrong.

The reverend is typical of religious leaders in this country regardless of which tradition they uphold. Of course there are those who hold views who claim to belong to a religion but by their words and deeds are the antithesis of the values their religion upholds, but fortunately they are a minority.

One of the myths surrounding the colonising of America was settlers trying to escape religious persecution and establish religious freedom. In fact most early settler communities imposed even greater levels of persecution than they had escaped from. The difference was that they were the persecutors instead of being the persecuted. I think at the heart of America still lingers an intolerance of different perspectives that lead, for example, to the execution of Quakers in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and currently is seen in the extreme partisanship of American politics.

  2. The Reverend is lifting the curtain of regression, ignorance and the hypocrisy which is poisoning our societies. The supreme irony being that those folk who would vilify minorities are themselves being vilified by a larger world.
Amen to what he is saying and proclaiming. He is presenting no simple solutions, he is saying the path is going to be difficult, but then all progress is.
When he mentioned sport and testosterone, the first thought which struck me, only as a basis was the way the Paralympics are organised in levels or degrees of disabilities for the same event. It must have taken some time and hard work to organise. But is this a lesson which can be adapted? I only offer this as a starting point following the question raised as to levels of testosterone.
Thanks for sharing a most uplifting video Scottie.

    Roger
