Sorry for your pain, my friend. This song has an interesting gestation, well, if you can believe the Wikipedia accounting of what it’s all about and how it came to be. Really interesting stuff.

This is a sad song on its own. I remember when it was on the radio, and cancer movies/stories were the rage, and the story we got was that Terry Jacks was a young high school kid dying of cancer, saying goodbye. So I looked up the Wikepedia entry Michael mentioned, and that story wasn’t even there! But the other stories were indeed interesting. I don’t care as much for Rod McKuen’s poetry as for his music, but still, he is talented. It is a fascinating evolution!
Now if you post anything sadder, Scottie, I’m going seriously and strongly consider calling in a welfare check on you over there in Florida. It is very hard right now with everything you have to deal with. Please make things as easy on you guys as possible. And post all the sad music you like, just nothing sadder than this one above, or I’ll be alarmed.
