![]() Tuesday’s execution in Florida WILL NOT take place as scheduled but the warrant remains open until noon on April 7. Our Twitter post: WHAT IF WE GOT IT WRONG? Florida’s own DNA expert says further DNA testing is warranted. #JamesDuckett’s 3/31 execution by #Florida is stayed BUT he may still be killed by April 7. He has always claimed innocence. In the 70 or so years since the abolition if the death penalty in NZ, there have been several instances of murder convictions being overturned, sometimes decades later. While multi-million dollar compensation payouts can never fully undo the harm done, executions can never be undone. Juries might be a good way of ensuring safe convictions, but not safe enough for something as final as executions.

in this day and age the idea of a death penalty is horrific. I realize that most people who are convicted and sentenced to death claim innocence, and sometimes they’re found to be right, but too late. I’d rather take a chance and just keep him safe behind bars…just in case…

Also agreed.
It’s also far more economical to keep a convict behind bars than to go through the execution phases. It’s easier on the victim’s loved ones, too; they don’t have to relive it all with every step of appeals, etc.
