Condition, location of state lawmaker with COVID-19 unknown
No information has been made available for weeks about the location or condition of Republican state Sen. Doug Ericksen of Ferndale, since he was reportedly in a Florida hospital being treated for COVID-19.
Ericksen wrote to legislative colleagues in November saying he tested positive for COVID-19 in El Salvador and needed monoclonal antibodies.
He arranged a medevac flight from El Salvador that weekend, former state Rep. Luanne Van Werven said.
Van Werven said the next week that Ericksen was recovering at a Florida hospital. Van Werven told the Bellingham Herald on Friday she had no new information and it would be best to contact Ericksen’s family.
The newspaper has tried multiple times to reach the family.
Ericksen’s legislative staff members told the newspaper that they can’t comment.
Ericksen has been critical of continuing state measures aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19, including business closures, social distancing and masking. His vaccination status has been unknown.
While Ericksen has been away, several parts of his 42nd Legislative District in Whatcom County were hit by catastrophic flooding that damaged around 1,900 homes, businesses and other buildings.
His legislative counterparts, Rep. Alicia Rule, D-Blaine, and Rep. Sharon Shewmake, D-Bellingham, have helped with cleanup efforts and have promised aid to the flood-stricken communities of Everson, Nooksack and Sumas.
University of Florida launches formal investigation after reports of pressure to destroy Covid-19 research data

University of Florida launches formal investigation after reports of Covid-19 research data being destroyed and delayedA formal investigation has been launched by the University of Florida after an internal report detailed a culture of fear among faculty members claiming political influence on campus as well as instances of pressure to destroy and delay publication of Covid-19 research data.
Vice President of UF Research David Norton announced the investigation in an email to faculty and staff Friday morning, according to the university. The email indicates the results of the investigation will be made public upon completion, but did not give a timeline.“UF Research became aware of possible violations of the UF Policy on Research Integrity,” Norton wrote in an email, saying the possible violation relates “to the reported destruction of COVID-19 research data at UF.”Asked if the university was aware of actual destruction of data, the school said the investigation would be looking into that. The allegations were detailed in the Faculty Senate report, released Monday. The committee did not name specific individuals, in order to protect the jobs of faculty members, Dr. Danaya Wright, a professor at the University of Florida and one of six authors listed on the report told CNN.“I don’t know that we need a smoking gun, in particular, to say that this is coming from state government, governmental entities,” Wright said. The report identifies challenges in the partnership with the State of Florida, with which the university worked jointly on Covid-19 research. The issues noted in the report include, “external pressure to destroy deidentified data, barriers to accessing and analyzing deidentified data in a timely manner, and barriers to publication of scientific research.” These issues created “challenges” for faculty to contribute scientific findings during a world-wide pandemic, the report summarized.A spokesperson for Florida’s governor denied any involvement.“Governor (Ron) DeSantis does not interfere with the internal matters of UF, which this is. Nobody from our office has told UF professors to refrain from criticizing any state policies,” said spokesperson Christina Pushaw.“Everyone in the academic community is free to share their opinions and critiques of policies. The governor is confident in UF leadership and proud that the university has risen in the national rankings to one of the top 5 public research universities in the country,” Pushaw said. The Faculty Senate report was the result of a three-week investigation looking into academic freedom at the university after three full-time professors were barred from testifying as paid experts in a lawsuit brought against the state that dealt with voting rights. The university later reversed its decision after facing intense public criticism.

Unemployment is 4.2 % Wages are rising. Please tell me again how the Media is promoting something that isn’t true! The wages for the lowest earners are rising faster than the highest earners for the first time in decades! How is that a media smoke screen? Just read an article about US jobless claims at 52-year low. All lies, I guess. The media reports the SAME employment numbers as “bad” under Biden that they said were “good” under Trump. Incessant screaming about inflation when it is a natural part of supply and demand. When people are polled about the issues without saying which stance is from Dems or Repubs result in HUGE numbers in favor of liberal and even PROGRESSIVE ideas being highly favored, especially taxing the wealthy and large corporations, but the media keeps saying that Dems need to move even further towards Repub ideals to appeal to the voters. The media is corporate, it definitely doesn’t favor Dems.
Of course it depends on which media you look at. Fox, OANN, Newsmax, Breitbart and similar will tell you that anything a Democrat does is wrong, even if a republican does it first. Hugs
I see pictures of Republican families armed to the teeth with guns. Some of which are the kind that are designed just to kill humans. Meanwhile they support an attack on the nation’s Capital, refuse to impeach a criminal in office and still try to claim that they are the party of Law and Order. This is gaslighting at the Olympic level.

These are local elections and they allow people living in the community a voice in what the elected officials do. That is democracy. The people have to be here in the country legally to vote, they just don’t have to be a citizen like in federal elections. So stop the fear mongering about a simple issue of fairness. Hugs

Imagine if your teenager was killed by another teenager, and your response was to give more teenagers more guns. At Christmas.
Republican brand is ‘proud irresponsibility’.

Jussie Smollett should pay for the investigation and so should the many white people calling the police on black people doing every day activities while black. Don’t single out the black guy for a false police report and let all the white people doing them go. The ones really hurt by Smollett’s false claims are the future LGBTQ+ who are attacked and abused who wont be believed or viewed with suspicion due to what Smollett did. The right is going to have a field day with this issue, but am not putting this one in the misleading right wing section because it is true that Smollett has been found guilty of making a false report of being attacked by maga guys. Hugs

No that is not why. One of the jobs of these medical experts is to explain the situation, the issue in a clear way the public can understand. As in the first part using something that sounds like “new” would lead to confusion. Using the name of a country’s leader also would be confusing. It also would be inflammatory. The maga right wing crowd seem to forget that many wanted to call Covid 19 the tRump virus because of the horrible job he did dealing with the virus. How would the maga cult feel about their dear leader saddled with that? They would scream non-stop that their feelings were hurt. So the same with other world leaders. Hugs
Total misdirection. Pregnancies are not contagious. I can not catch the zygote from you. a bunch of women can not get pregnant from one pregnant woman. Covid is a virus, it is contagious just from being in a room with a person who has it. To get pregnant requires an action on your part, but catching Covid doesn’t require you to participate. Vaccine mandates are legal and have been required since before the US was a country. Good old George Washington required his soldiers to get vaccinated. Hugs
People are comparing 2021 gas prices to 2020 gas prices when the economy was in a covid lockdown and fewer people driving and demand was way down. Better comparison prices in 2018 (from Ballotpedia)“As of Aug. 7, 2018, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline ranged from $2.57 (Mississippi) to $3.77 (Hawaii). As of Aug. 7, 2018, average gasoline prices per gallon equaled or exceeded $3.00 in 11 states and Washington, D.C.The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline on Aug. 7, 2018, was $2.86.” Today in Austin gas is $2.95. Why not return the abortion issue to the women and let them decide!? Right, leave it up to individual states to impose their rule over women. Next up, can religious rulers impose their views on their states’ populations? They don’t want the United States of America, they want the Independent States of America. More powers for the governors. The main fallacy with “return to the states and let the voters decide” is that the more oppressive states are doing their best to cherry pick who “the voters” are. If the abortion issue was truly decided by the voters it would be much more available as would birth control. Because the right to bodily autonomy should be constitutionally protected. It’s not that hard to understand. Because bodily autonomy is too important to let states have different rules. Something that we already do for a myriad less basic issues. Like which side of the road to drive on. Like requiring that everyone legally allowed have actual access to voting. Like requiring drugs be tested for efficacy and safety. Hugs

Another example of Mike Lester’s incompetence with statistics. There has been no statistically significant difference in the increase in homicide rates for cities with Democratic and Republican mayors. US cities with Trump hotels have higher homicide rates than the US as a whole. That’s just about as meaningful a statistic as the one M. Lester is relying on. More big cities have Democrat (or non-partisan) mayors than GQP or even GOP. That has been true all along. And it’s also true that bigger cities have more criminals who are committing more murders than last year or the year before. But if you look at the top 5 or 10 cities with GOP mayors and the most murderous cities of similar size with Democrat mayors, you will see that the rates have no correlation w/ the party in charge. None. Interesting. The top ten states in terms of murder rates are: Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, S. Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Maryland and Georgia. Most of these are deep red states. Maybe they need Democratic governors. Hugs
There are elections in those cities.
Portland ran all “nonpartisan” candidates. I don’t see an R candidate in Tucson. Albuquerque ran all “nonpartisan” candidates. Austin ran all “nonpartisan” candidates. I don’t see an R candidate in St. Paul. Baton Rouge was a 56/43 result. Indianapolis was a 72/27 result. Louisville was a 61/27 result. Toledo ran all “nonpartisan” candidates. Columbus -the nonpartisan incumbent ran unopposed as far as I can tell. In Rochester it looks like the D candidate ran unopposed In Philly it looks like an 80/19 result. This doesn’t look like the Rs are trying Mike. 5 of those races were all “nonpartisan”. While I agree that those kids would want the murder rate to go down I don’t see any of them looking to Rs to save them. Results pulled from Ballotpedia or Wikipedia (depending on which came up first).
