Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning to describe the toxicity in Congress that exploded during Donald Trump’s four years as president, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) shared a recording of a vile death threat against her and her family.

With CNN host Dana Bash warning the audience about what was to follow, her producers play the audio where an unidentified man called the member of Congress a multitude of obscene names before stating, “I hope your family dies in front of you. I pray to God, if you got any children, they die in your face.”

As for comment afterward by host Bash, Dingell sat in silence for a moment before explaining the recording was one of many threats she has received since being singled out by the former president.

“I’ve been getting those for a couple of years ever since Christmastime, the Christmas, right after [husband] John had died,” she recalled.

“John was my late husband and it — you know, once you’re in that Trump hate tunnel, you kind of don’t escape it,” she continued. “There are a lot of people that are good, wonderful to meet, et cetera, but we average several of those a week and we’re used to it. My friends look at me, it’s almost like therapy, and say, ‘How can you do this?’ But you have to — we’ve got to be careful not to normalize it, but I’m not going to not do my job. I’m not going to go out and not be with people. I’m not going to go out and not listen to them. I want the American people to think about what’s happening in our country, that this kind of hate, this fear is happening in communities across the country.”

  1. Hi Scottie;
    This was a great thing to be shared. There are people out there that believe that using the most profane and horrible words that they can manage to speak with people they disagree politically is acceptable. I would ask if their mother knows they speak like that, but often times it is a family shared political view. I am very alone in my family in that I don’t think trump was brilliant. There are very few real reasons to hate democrats that can be articulated outside of conjecture type statements, and I blame that on people like that tucker carlson and hannity. They make statements without back up arguments and people with limited desire to know the back story or facts swallow it whole. And, the horrible thing is they sit there in their pews on Sunday and think themselves such good Christians.
    I want to spell this out very clearly: Our country and the good folks in it were hijacked by the terrorists like carlson and hannity and trump that have made hate and negative conjecture normal for far too many people. Truth be told, we are FAR more likely to be killed by a hate filled right wingnut than by an islamic terrorist, and that idea is scary.

    hugs;

    1. I sometimes wonder why someone with widespread influence doesn’t speak out against this type of stuff. I mean, there are murmurings of how “horrible” it is, but who stands up and condemns it?

      It reminds me of the schoolyard bullies that everyone is afraid of … but when that one kid who isn’t afraid of anything stands up to them — and they slink off to the other end of the playground.

      1. Hey Nan. The problem is these bullies carry guns and threaten children and families. They pile on and they are many while the person standing up to them is not really getting much help. Law enforcement either agrees with the violent nut jobs or they claim they need the villains to act before they can do anything. These people have thrown out the ideas of civil behavior or normal actions. Now it is all how they feel, what they want, they run on anger mostly because it produces a sort of high in the brain but needs ever greater stimulation to achieve. What interests me is how this really got started with the religious and home schooling. Don’t like your kid knowing the truth then teach them the myths at home. But that has now changed to if anything is being done you don’t like even if you don’t understand it then you have the right to angerly stop it. Your will shall be done on others because you want it. No need to grant the same rights to anyone else for their kids, just what you demand is important, you need everyone to do what you want. Look at the people at school board meetings. The people are screaming and shouting. Nothing rational, not behavior that we would accept from kids a decade ago is now the normal way this segment of society act. They are not going to slink off until they are met with a strong wall of the majority equal to the force the thugs bring. That takes the police and law enforcement to come down strong against this behavior instead of walking away.

        1. Yes, I regrettably have to admit that what you say is true. And those of us in the “older generation” can’t help but ask … how did this happen? Where did we go wrong? What could/should we have done to stop it?

          Of course, hindsight will tell us the answers, but when you’re living it, the changes are gradual and you don’t really notice them. Like the frog in the hot water.

    2. Hello Randy. Well said. This is the result of the dumbing down of the country started so long ago. Destroying public education was the work of the wealthy that wanted a easy to control worker class. Education was to be saved for their kids so they could manage and control that worker class. Know your place and stay in it.

      Well now we have a segment of the population that runs on emotions, their emotions, and thought / reason don’t enter into it. That again is why they love tRump, he runs on emotion and never tries to reason something out. If he feels it then it is the truth or the way it was, regardless of reality.

      I have often said as a gay man in the US I am in far greater danger from a Christian nationalist redneck than I am a devote Muslim. I have been personally threatened by the former but not the later.
