This is why republicans are so desperate to end any talk or, protection of, or acceptance of LGBTQ+ in schools. The more people see it, the more people have friends and family that are LGBTQ+, the more open it is in society on social media, the more normal and tolerant people are. The more young people will come out and live as the person they are. Republicans are desperate to stop this. Hugs. Scottie
Gallup: 7.6% Of US Adults Now Identify As LGBTQ
Gallup Polling reports:
LGBTQ+ identification in the U.S. continues to grow, with 7.6% of U.S. adults now identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or some other sexual orientation besides heterosexual. The current figure is up from 5.6% four years ago and 3.5% in 2012. Bisexual adults make up the largest proportion of the LGBTQ+ population — 4.4% of U.S. adults and 57.3% of LGBTQ+ adults say they are bisexual.
Slightly less than 1% of U.S. adults are transgender. Overall, each younger generation is about twice as likely as the generation that preceded it to identify as LGBTQ+. More than one in five Gen Z adults, ranging in age from 18 to 26 in 2023, identify as LGBTQ+, as do nearly one in 10 millennials (aged 27 to 42). The percentage drops to less than 5% of Generation X, 2% of baby boomers and 1% of the Silent Generation.

How does that compare to Congress? Here 11% of our legislature openly identify as LGBTQIA+.
I don’t know if there has been a gallop poll done in NZ on gender and sexual identity, but a survey by Stats NZ (the governmental Department of Statistics) in 2019/2020 found 5% of the population LGBT. Other variations were not included.
Last year’s census was the first time comprehensive questions on gender and sexual identity were included and it will be interesting to see the results when they are released over the next few months. I suspect it will be much higher than that found in the earlier survey.
Some significant facts from the earlier survey was that while the LGBT population had higher education than the general population, they had significantly lower income and 2.5 times more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. It’s also interesting to note that Polynesian people (Māori and Pasifika) were twice as likely to be LGBT than other ethnicities.
However similar statistics for autistic people are much worse with 80% unemployed or under employed and 70% suffering mental health issues.

Hi Barry. Thanks for the information. I looked it up. While small, the number of lesbian, gay and bisexual lawmakers in Congress has steadily increased over the last decade.
There are 12 openly LGBT members of the current (118th) Congress, all of whom are Democrats. Three are senators and the rest are House representatives. This constitutes the most LGBT congresspeople serving at the same time in U.S. history. In the current Senate, Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin became the first openly lesbian, gay or bisexual person to serve in the chamber when she was elected in 2012, and Kyrsten Sinema, an independent from Arizona, is the first openly bisexual person to serve in either chamber. Eight of the 11 House members who identify as gay or lesbian are gay men and three are lesbians.
However one of those house members they are counting has been expelled.
Here in the US gay people / households tend to have more disposable income because most don’t have children. Best Wishes. Scottie
