Please notice all the misinformation and religious reasons for this push to erase the LGBTQ+ from schools and the public society. Hugs.
The New Orleans Times Picayune reports:
The Louisiana Senate passed legislation Thursday afternoon to forbid school staffers from talking to students in grades K-12 about sexual orientation or gender identity. House Bill 122 passed 28-7, with all Senate Republicans and two Democrats in support. It now heads to Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican who has claimed without citing evidence that some teachers aim to indoctrinate students with “radical” ideas. Landry is expected to sign the measure into law.
Sen. Beth Mizell, R Franklinton, said the bill’s intent was not to harm LGBTQ+ students but to make schools a “safe space” where parents know that staff won’t discuss sensitive topics with their children. The lawmaker behind HB 122, Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, also authored a bill to require all public schools and universities in the state to post the Ten Commandments. The Senate overwhelmingly approved that measure last week.

Last year Democratic former Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed Mizell’s anti-trans bill and Horton’s first attempt at a “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Mizell is an occasional guest on hate group leader Tony Perkins’ podcast. Horton has said she tried again on her “Don’t Say Gay” bill upon the encouragement of her pastor.

here’s what i really hate about this bill. glbtqi+ (did i get them all) is a FACT. even if you don’t see as many “i” or “+” there are millions of people who ARE gay, lesbian, trans, etc.
a better bill would have guidelines on HOW to address these topics in the classroom.
but there are parents and others who believe that teachers are literally recruiting kids to “turn” gay. it’s complicated in my opinion. it is not a black and white issue.
and yet, legislators can claim they are “protecting children.” it’s maddening.

Hi Susan. Yes. Everything you said is the truth. One of the original authors of the don’t say gay bill in Florida admitted he wrote the bill because he hated that kids coming out as gay or trans were accepted and treated fairly by the other students. He openly said he wanted kids too scared to come out, he wanted the other kids to target them with hate and harassment. He wanted them harmed for being open about who they were. As he said in the good old days when he was in school the kids would beat up the weird kids, not give them friendship. He also targeted teachers who gave comfort and support for LGBTQ+ kids and were supportive of anti-bullying campaigns. Part of the goal of all these bills is to stop those anti-bullying campaigns. They want the kids who are different attacked, afraid, and miserable. They have a weird idea that if they can deny LGBTQ+ people exist to students, and remove any positive mentions of LGBTQ+ from the schools / libraries while pushing harmful messages about LGBTQ+ people, kids won’t learn tolerance and acceptance of LGBTQ+ kids / adults. It doesn’t work that way. There were no books or programs for gay kids growing up in the past when I was a kid, and I turned out gay, as did so many others. But they want a cis straight Christian nation. Hugs. Scottie
