This is an excellent rant. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Janet. I am an atheist but I respect religious people that follow the precepts of helping others and doing no harm to others. Most people here have heard me talk of my own personal code of life which is the same as having a religious belief without the spirituality involved. It guides my life and helps me right myself if I start to flounder, just as good religious people use their faith to help guide them. There are many religious people here who are more than welcome because they use their faith to uplift people not attack them. Rev. Ed Trevors is one who often says he follows Jesus more than the bible. As In this video he doesn’t condemn those who may not live according to the Old Testament, instead he finds a way to use the teachings of Jesus to help or accept others. He is a big supporter of the LGBTQ+.

I respect all atheists who can also respect religious people. I don’t know whether or not you are aware, but I am Pagan. Specifically, I am a Goddess worshiping witch. But I appreciate Christians who follow the teachings of Christ. And yes, Rev. Ed Trevors certainly has that vibe. John Pavlovitz is another. He has a substack that I recommend, and is also on Facebook.
In my personal life, before leaving Texas, I knew several such Christians as well, and still keep in touch with a few. Religion should not ever be used to condemn. It’s raison d’être, as it were, is, in my opinion, to bring people into harmony.

Hi Janet. I agree. My husband was into Wicca once, but couldn’t find people around us to practice with, and even though I tried but I am just too science based. But I also understand science learns new ways to understand things all the time. We did not know of germ theory until someone discovered it, we did not understand radiation until some scientist look at the effects in a new way. Also we are now realizing that many of the old time use of herbs and plants for healing have medical properties. So I am a live and let live, and accept everyone who does no harm to others. Hugs. Then you know that Wicca teaches “An it harm none, do as ye will.” Blessings.

Also, for the science mind: Consider quantum theory, and how observation creates reality. I’ll leave that thought experiment for you to follow on your own at some point. 😊

Thank you, Janet. As I said I realize that science finds ways to discover more than we understood before. I personally believe the idea of collective consciousness or the idea the human brain can send and receive thoughts even though I can not find empirical evidence of it. There are things yet not explained. I just suggested to my spouse he finds other Wicca people near us. He likes the idea. Thank you for spurring me to do that for him. Hugs. Scottie

You are a kind person, and you clearly care deeply about him. I’m glad I could help in some small way.

Yes, I agree Janet. I just couldn’t wrap my mind around the mystical part of it. Ron made and kept a shadow book … I think that was what it was called. He researched runes and other stuff. He burned sage … something I detest due to the smell. Basically while I participated and encouraged him, I never could get into it. He stopped actively participating once he had no one else to be involved with in it. I should be a good spouse and encourage him to find a coven around us. But I have not addressed it yet. He still has his spiritual beliefs and I will never take those from him. But I do regret he put it all aside, only because it brought him comfort as science does me. Hugs. Scottie

There’s really multiple levels of practice, just as in Christianity. Active practice is similar to going to church. But even that can be, and often is, solitary.
I don’t actively practice much. My spiritual family is back in Texas. But I honor my Goddesses, and acknowledge the holidays. I occasionally offer distance healing (Reiki specifically) and have been known to use magickal methods of obtaining some measure of Justice when appropriate.
I don’t know if you are aware of the DV assault I suffered in January. Just this past week, I became aware that my abuser has cancer. I’m not saying I consciously sought harm to that person. Let’s just say that “Karma is a bitch, and don’t piss off witches.”

Hi Janet. I did not know. Thankfully you are OK. I respect your faith. I wish Karma was a true thing, I so really do. But then why did I make myself care for my abusive adopting parents when they were dying, for the male having to clean him, help him urinate, holding the same organ he used to hurt me so badly, cleaning the butt he made me …
He died in his sleep in hospice. Where was the karma of what he did to me and where was my reward for vowing never to be like them and taking care of them as they were dying as they begged me to. Their own hell spawn offspring were like vultures just waiting for them to die. Each of them jockeying to be the one most important.
Janet I am bitter tonight so disregard the question on Karma. Ron also believes in it. He never lived my life. He can not know how these people terrorized me. If Karma is real … do I get some help sometime. I do which you the best. Hugs. Scottie

I liked your comment mainly to acknowledge it and your pain. Karma is not always in this life. I believe in reincarnation. In that belief, it’s often in the next life when you get your Justice.
I am deeply saddened by what you endured. My wish to you is peace. At this moment, it’s all I can offer. There’s a reason Heaven and Hell are such popular ideas. Blessings

Thank you Janet. Maybe Karma will be more in the next life, but I think I got it in this life after I had time to think on it.
While the AP hated each other actively and had no love and lots of active hate for each other, I somehow met Ron in a very unexpected way and after dating for two months we became a couple in Oct 1990. We share a deep supportive wonderful love. Something the people that abused me never had. Hugs. Scottie

Oh, and the traditional term is “Book of Shadows.” In it’s simplest form, it’s a journal of what worked, and a record for those who might follow you. It’s a very personal book. Blessings

I am so happy to read this conversation! I remembered, Janet, that you honored Goddesses and were Pagan, but hadn’t seen much about it recently, so was just waiting to see if it came up. And now it has. And we all know each other a little better, and are better friends for it.

I don’t tend to talk about it much. Pagans are not called to proselytizing, unlike Christians. Because of a history of hatred and demonization, we tend toward quietly practicing. But this seemed a time of calling, and I am loathe to ignore that calling. Perhaps some good has come of it. Scottie seems to feel like it has.
And to be quite blunt: I am incredibly tired of being judged for who I am. 🤷♀️

Well, and as I consider my religion to be private and personal, I presume others feel the same and will say something when they wish. A time or two since you’ve been here, it occurred to me that I thought I remembered that, but I just figured you’d say something if/when a time arose. And you did! Representation FTW! 🖖💜

Thank you. Yes, representation is often a good thing, but depends on the audience. I feel safe here, and of course, that’s Scottie’s purpose, isn’t it? 🫂

Yes, it is! I’m happy you’ve found it safe.

Hi Janet. The pagans I know seem like very nice people. Plus the Wiccan that Ron was into had a belief in do not harm and that any harm done to others comes back on you times 3. That is a powerful belief system to do good. As you say I have never been proselytized to or told I was an abomination to their god by anyone I met who practiced Wicca. Hugs. Scottie

Hi Janet. Again I am very sorry for your abuse. Yes Ron had his Book of Shadows also. He bought an expensive leather-bound book and diligently wrote stuff in it. Most I don’t know or understand. But I do remember him looking up runes along with other things. He bought both of us decorative alter knives (sorry I forget the names he called them) Thanks for your suggestions. Hugs. Scottie
