THE GUARDIAN: ‘Unschooling’ parents put their kids in charge of their own educations. Are th ey actually learning?

To me this is child abuse. This is no way to educate a child. Children don’t know what they need to learn in a complex world and letting them play all day is not learning. Hugs. Scottie

The radical, open-ended teaching philosophy has gained steam among influencers. But some who experienced it would never go back

  1. I agree, though I don’t know about family separation if it’s done from simple ignorance of how children learn, and what they need to know at various ages. But unschooling probably should be treated as truancy (which, these days, is the mistake of the parents, not the child. In most states, anyway.)

    1. Hi Ali. There is a reason being an educator is a degree position that takes a lot of schooling to get to. Sadly many states are trying to blur that like in Florida where DeathSantis wanted to let police officers and former military be teachers with no skills or qualification. It is simply to make it seems teachers are nothing more than just someone who comes into the class and baby sit kids for a day. They disregard the training and the long hours of both prep and after school work. They have this weird idea that teachers just get up there in front of a class like community members Sunday school teachers, who spout only their opinions. I am sick of this.

It sadly started in the 1980s by hyper religious leaders like Mike Huckabee who realized that kids who go to school tend to have more accepting views towards those who are different and hated that these kids were being taught evolution which somehow they took to be an attack on their god. But ten years later I saw documentaries on these original homeschooled kids using the religious texts / books put out by religious organizations and they showed the kids couldn’t do basic math nor were proficient in any subject because the parents only taught the bible. After all god was coming back every day so why would their kids need that stuff.

Granted some homeschooling has gotten much better and there are some good curriculums, but again most people are not qualified to teach nor are they providing the kids with social learning skills of being around other kids. Hugs. Scottie
