Oh I’ve been familiar with this problem since I was a child, from the day my parents found me drawing with a green coloured pencil which I thought was an ordinary pencil…Then the time in early adolescence when we used to have standard school medical checks….
One was colour perception- The circle of coloured dots and you are supposed to see a particular number or if your perception was slightly ‘off’ two other numbers and I saw one that was not ‘on the chart’.
Then there was my military modelling painting exercises, and one day Sheila looked over my shoulder and asked, in a curiosity way ‘Darling. Why are you painting that cavalry horse green?’.
These days I ask Sheila what the colour I am looking at is supposed to be.
My brain actually made some adjustments, did a deal with the senses….Thus if something might look a certain shade of one colour I guess it is actually another, usually that works out ok.
As for colour tests, at this time of life I tend to treat them as a fun exercise into perceptions of Reality.
Interesting article though.

Hello Roger. I struggle with those color / hidden number circles also. I barely past the color requirements for my military satellite repair classes. Ron and I often talk about the colors of the home in our development. Ron often has to correct me on what is the color really is. Hugs. Scottie

My Dad who served in WWII in the Signals Corps used to joke about what chaos I could have caused he had such a funny and knock about delivery that I used to find it hilarious and still do.
Yes Sheila is the one who choses ALL the colours in our house.
Best wishes.

Hi Roger I understand. Ron and I work together to pick colors but he will question me as to what color I see and want to have shown. Often what I think will be the color others see is not the one I see. It is weird.
Roger I am going offline for a while, a few days to fix / update the computers. Please don’t feel bad if you don’t see me for a few days. Hugs and loves. Scottie

Fascinating. I’ll be reblogging this one.
My result?
Well, duh. Of course turquoise is green. 😊

Hi. Thank you for the reblog Janet. I took the test twice. The first time I was 188 and the second I was 187. Your boundary is at hue 187, bluer than 97% of the population. For you, turquoise is green. So we are very close in our color perception. Hugs. Scottie

Oh, and the reference to Sapir-Whorf? “chef’s kiss”
My Barbara was a linguist by training before she became a social worker. She firmly believed that language creates reality. I’m more in the camp that it reflects reality, both physical and cultural. Still, loved the article, and the site.

I always find this stuff interesting; I went to bed without supper one time because my stepmom kept telling me to get the “green” bowls for the potatoes and the gravy. Now, I maybe should have known which bowls she meant, but I always did after that night (I was 7.) But, first, we had those bowls before the steps came along, and they were always blue. They were a delightful sky blue, and everyone, including all the steps except Mom, conceded they were sky blue. But I always got mixed up, because when Mom specified a thing, she meant that thing, and sometimes that meant that something got put in the wrong place, so we had to find it. So, I looked and looked for the green bowls, which turned out to be the blue bowls which were right where they should have been. And missed supper over it. I don’t know if I ever took this color test, either, but I’ve never had trouble with green and blue with anyone else. You know, I’m a pretty literal person; to me, turquoise is not green, not blue, but turquoise. The block on the Guardian page is entirely blue, to me; not enough green anywhere to overcome the blue.
Interestingly, my stepmom’s favorite color was blue; she preferred the deeper hues between royal and cobalt blue. ismy.blue says my threshold is 149; I feel like I fudged on the green, because the two greens I saw were greener at the tops, bluer at the bottoms but I called them green because of the tops. Also, I’m on DH’s Chromebook; maybe it’s the settings, but I saw what I saw.
I am probably too literal for this stuff. ismy.blue says for me, turquoise is blue. Maybe it is if I add blue to it. This was fun!

Hi Ali. I am glad you enjoy it. I think your mother overreacted, sending you to bed with no supper. Sadly I went to bed hungry too many times. My hue cut off is 187 or 188, I took the test twice to be sure. For me turquoise is green. I am closer to Janet than to you on the color chart. Hugs. Scottie
