Watch: GOP Ohio AG gets testy after being fact-checked live on CNN

Republican Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost grew testy on Monday when CNN host Brianna Keilar fact-checked him for promoting false claims about Haitian immigrants.

During an interview about bomb threats that have been leveled against schools in Springfield, Ohio in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s attacks on the community there, Keilar asked Yost about his own role in helping Trump advance false claims about immigrants kidnapping and eating residents’ pets.

Keilar pointed out that Springfield Mayor Rob Rue has said that local police have investigated and found no evidence to back up claims that Haitian immigrants in the city are eating either pets or local wildlife.

“Do you think the mayor is lying?” she asked him.

Yost dodged the question and said that most of his social media posts about Haitian immigrants in Springfield have been on the “real impacts” they’ve had rather than the fictional pet-eating impacts.

“My tweet was about the media’s disregard for citizen reports, citizen interaction with their government,” he said.

Keilar then pressed him for more information about these “citizen reports” and Yost said he was referring to “several videotaped comments that were made by citizens regarding a variety of things going on in Springfield.”

Yost added that these comments from citizens “are not enough to make a case” against Haitian immigrants, and he then pivoted to saying that too many children attending school in Springfield don’t speak English.

Keilar then asked Yost why he and other Republicans don’t simply talk about the strain on local resources that migrant communities are placing on public services instead of telling lurid and false tales about pet eating, especially “when you are supposed to be a very serious law enforcement individual.”

Yost took exception to this statement.

“Implying, of course, that you think I’m not [serious],” he replied indignantly.

  1. I don’t know why they do that, except for that is the example the VP candidate is setting for other elected officials. Still, though, I read earlier that the mayor of Springfield has politely by pointedly asked the Trump campaign to stay away, and the Governor has strongly suggested it’d be better for the campaign and the state to stay away. Citizens, even those who are supporters of the Don, are saying they don’t have trouble with the immigrants living in Springfield, and that they’ve really helped the economy. I just went to search so I could link, but we’ve all already read about all that, anyway, so no sense.

So I guess, yeah, the ones who keep hanging on the “maybe not eating pets but still should be deported” aren’t very serious about their elected duties and their constituents’s actual security.

I’ve had at least 3 rants I was going to write today, but decided not to because there is already so much ugliness happening, and there is plenty of snark about the ugliness without me contributing more to the universe. I hope that’s not a disappointment.

    1. Hi Ali. First I want to talk about rants. They have a good place that helps both the writer and the reader who feels the same way. Plus they help frame a conversation. I would love to read your rants. I plan to do mine in video form when I get everything set up. I used to do on my old blog 10 or 15 minute rants on video and post them to my old blog. I still have the videos, and they are grand old footage of how my looks changed over the years. Here is the link to my old videos so you can see how my facial hair changed over the years. Take a look it is a fun trip for me into history.

As to why the republicans do it … think about what people are talking about. Anytime Kamala Harris gets good press Vance or tRump says something stupid the media focuses on. If tRump is having a bad time, he or Vance doubles down with other outlandish stuff to change the news narrative. tRump has been a master of this all his life. Most of his life has been a fake veneer to increase his own self-esteem with the public. Now going to do dishes with Ron. Hugs. Scottie

      1. Well, ya know; most of the time my rants are what so many others are writing, anyway; I don’t feel called, when it gets down to it, to write yet another blog entry about awful people doing awful things. I rant plenty in comments, of course! I seem to feel more called to rant, that way! I know, I’m a weirdo, but not the Republican sort.

I will, however, get a commentary-type blog entry done. It just seems so important to share news, and ways to prepare to vote, and things that can enhance our mental health through all of this, too. I guess we each have our thing! 🔔
