Yes, he did! And it is very clear from his words that he doesn’t mean only currently-elected Democrats, but all Democrats. It’s on all of we the people.
Hi Ali. I read it as being mostly directed at elected officials. They after all are the leaders, they are in more powerful positions than the individuals at large. I can not demand access to a federal ICE detention facility but any member of congress can. And they can act if they don’t get it. I as a resident of Florida can not demand access to state run detention facilities, but the democrats in the state legislature legally can and can act if denied. So I took it to be addressing doing more than getting the name of a bill changed. Hugs
Maybe if you have time, give it another look. He was talking to all Dems, and also Dem voters who don’t think they’re getting what they ought to be. He was very inclusive. I figured he would be; it’s a team effort, not an “elite” effort. He’s so good at getting that across in a way I never can.
Hi Ali. I will but I would point out that I have again posted more of these type posts. The point is the people think the democratic leadership and the elected people are not standing up now forcefully enough. This is not about the public doing anything, it is about the public demanding the people they elected doing something.
That is a huge difference Ali.
The democratic leadership still has not endorsed the democratic nominee for the city of NY. Remember during Biden it was “blue no matter who” Now they are playing games because he is a Democratic Socialist like Bernie Sanders and AOC. Dem voters are doing the work Ali, but the corporate democrats are blocking what the younger part of the party want. Deliberately. They want to be corporate democrats instead of what the democrats were in the 1970s / 1980s that I remember.
Mamdami got the highest vote total and the entire youth vote that the democrats claim to want …. yet the party won’t get behind him to instead help Andrew Cuomo because he is a proven republican lite who will play ball with bribes from rich corporate individuals.
Again Ali it is not the average democrat that is the problem. It is the elected ones in congress that value their seat more than they are willing to do the wishes of those they represent. Those people see getting elected as the golden ticket to personal wealth and authority. I wish you could see that. Hugs
Most importantly, I hope you are feeling better and more rested, and it’s good to see you out! 🙂
Obama was speaking to the rest of us about the nature of there is more to do than legislative work. A fundraiser won’t necessarily have the legislators in the audience as much as it will have donors. The graf saying: “You know, don’t tell me you’re a Democrat, but you’re kind of disappointed right now, so you’re not doing anything. No, now is exactly the time that you get in there and do something,” he said. “Don’t say that you care deeply about free speech and then you’re quiet. No, you stand up for free speech when it’s hard. When somebody says something that you don’t like, but you still say, ‘You know what, that person has the right to speak.’ … What’s needed now is courage.” That’s to we the people (well, the people in the audience, but by extension us, because we’re reading it.) Legislators aren’t making those statements about being disappointed and so not doing anything. Anyway, elected ones are not the leaders: We The People are the leaders. Legislators-heck, even Sen. Schumer!-do stand up for free speech, but where are we the people when legislators are threatened and arrested? We have to show up, too.
