Rep. Jim Jordan faces deposition about OSU sex abuse scandal
The powerful Ohio Republican coached wrestlers who say he knew team doctor Richard Strauss molested them but did nothing to protect them.
Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, one of the Republican Party’s top inquisitors in Congress, is expected to be deposed Friday about allegations that he failed to protect the wrestlers he once coached at Ohio State University from a sexual predator, four plaintiffs in lawsuits against the university told NBC News.
Jordan, who was the assistant wrestling coach at the university from 1986 to 1994 before he got into politics, has repeatedly and publicly denied any knowledge that the team’s doctor, Richard Strauss, was preying on the athletes.
It will be the first time Jordan has be questioned under oath by lawyers representing hundreds of former OSU students, both athletes and nonathletes, who are suing the school for damages in federal court in the Southern District of Ohio. Jordan is not a defendant, but he is referred to in some of the lawsuits alleging he was aware of the abuse.
Jordan, the powerful chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and a staunch ally of President Donald Trump, is known for his combative questioning of witnesses and for avoiding suit jackets during it.
Reached for comment, Jordan spokesperson Russell Dye released a variation of the statement Jordan’s team has been using since July 2018, when three former OSU wrestlers told NBC News that Jordan was lying when he claimed he did not know that Strauss molested them under the guise of giving physical examinations. Hi Ali. A tough story. I was sexually abused in school. Not college, but I had those that knew what my home life was take that as an OK to use me at school themselves. But I am not a congressman. Nor was I an adult who could report it as Jordan was. Now he wants to be the big moral authority demanding everyone live as you dictate. But he watched, knew what was happening, and let his fellow teammates / friends be molested for his own benefit. He is not a leader he is no different from my oldest hell sibling who took 5-8 year old me to parties where he sold me for drugs and money, no different from the hell spawn females who were dating or having parties and sold / gave me to the males to have the sex they did not want to give or to supply the party with stuff. He doesn’t deserve to be a congress person much less get a pass from him looking the other way. He was not a kid, he was a well-built adult. Either he liked / enjoyed what was happening or felt too helpless to stop it. Hugs

I probably should have put a content warning on this, and I thought of it, but then thought that maybe using “Gym Jordan” and the fact that at least some justice is upcoming would make it OK, and I didn’t do a content warning. I’m sorry.

Hi Ali. No need for a warning I understood what the post was by the title. I have followed the saga because of the fact this guy is a holier than thou Christian “family values” guy who wants to eliminate the LGBTQ+ community and any public mention or representation of us. Yet he stood by and let the abuse happen or …. worse watched and enjoyed it happening. Hugs
