(snip) So, it came as some surprise when reports emerged that Mr. Walters is being accused of displaying pornography on a television in his office during an executive session of the State Board of Education this past Thursday, according to a few board members in attendance.
Becky Carson and Ryan Deatherageâboth of whom were appointed this year to the Board by Republican Gov. Kevin Stittsâwere the only two in a position to see the screen and were understandably shocked. Hereâs what Ms. Carson said:
I was like, âWhat am I seeing?â I kind of was in shock, honestly. I started to question whether I was actually seeing what I was seeing,â Carson said. âI was like, âIs that woman naked?â And then I was like, âNo, sheâs got a body suit on.â And it happened very quickly, I was like, âThat is not a body suit.â And I hate to even use these terms, but I said, âThose are her nipples.â And then I was looking closer, and I got a full-body view, and I was like, âThat is pubic hair.â Even right now, I couldnât even tell you what I was watching.
I was so disturbed by it, that I was like â very loudly and boastfully, like I was a parent or a teacher â I said, âWhat is on your TV? What am I watching?â He was like, âWhat? What are you talking about?â He stood up and saw it. He made acknowledgment that he saw it,â Carson recalled. âAnd I said, âTurn it off. Now.â And he was like, âWhat is this? What is this?â So he acknowledged it was inappropriate just by those words. And he was like, âI canât get it to turn off. I canât figure out how to turn it off.â And I said, âGet it turned off.â So he finally got it turned off, and that was the end of it. He didnât address it. He didnât apologize. Nothing was said.
Mr. Deatherage concurred: âI donât know if he turned it off or switched the channel, I donât remember. I was surprised that when he came back to the table, he was not apologetic. I didnât ever hear an apology for that being on, and he didnât seem to be fazed that it was on.â
Republican leaders in the State Senate are now launching an investigation into the matter, which they described as a âbizarre and troubling situation.â All seem unanimously perplexed and concerned. (snip-please do go read the rest; Charlotte closes with some excellent wordplay!)

As badly as I’ve love to make up a story like that, it always turns out that they hoist themselves by their own petards, and we don’t have to make anything up! Frequently it turns out that when they accuse, it’s actually like a confession of what they do themselves.

That’s exactly what we say for a while. If a right-winger accuses someone else of something you know they did it. Attack is the best defence. It’s bizzare!

this may seem petty but the delivery of that sounded like a 15 year old kid, like, you know, kinda like too young and like in the wrong room…Ms. Carson sounds like, you know, too young to be in whatever situation she is, like, is she a for real, you know, political person?

She’s an appointed Board member. It is very likely that she truly had never seen such a thing before, and certainly any of us never expect to see such a thing at such a time! That being said, she’s also either a devout evangelical or tries to show herself as one; there are certain behaviors women are expected to exhibit. Remember the “baby voice” and phraseology Sen. Katie Britt used during her SOTU rebuttal (Biden’s final one)? It’s like that.
Ms. Carson had to simultaneously stand up for what is right and proper, while not “putting herself forward” and seeming to place herself above and/or in judgment of a man in a leadership position, though I believe even in OK, the Board is the boss of the Supt. Anyway, I think that would be tough; I’m just glad she didn’t put up with the porn, and seek guidance from her husband as to whether to expose this or not, which is also evangelical training for women. Of course, technically, as an evangelical, she would’t be in the position on the board at all, so there’s that.
I’m happy she’s done the right thing about this. Actually, most states have laws about exhibiting such material within 1,000 feet of a school. Now within the privacy of one’s home, the law wouldn’t touch that. But this is on school property, which is the public’s property, and he was exhibiting it to people who were not present for the purpose of viewing that material. Walters could be in deep trouble. I hope the news keeps up with this!
