Forest Hills superintendent stands by decision to paint over student-created diversity mural

https://www.wvxu.org/education/2023-09-20/forest-hills-superintendent-decision-paint-diversity-mural

The start of the article doesn’t mention it, but this school is in Ohio.  I followed a link in the article and this school also stopped celebrating diversity day and the students protested.  Seems the right is again desperately trying to push a primarily white cis straight Christian society.  And while they claim that others are not civil enough, these same people use threats, violence, and they mock and insult others.  Notice how the anti-diversity anti-LGBTQIA maga republicans act when others are testifying.  No respect whatsoever.  Fundamentalist Christian racist bigot maga are the most self entitled people ever.  Hugs.

Parents and students attend the Forest Hills school board meeting on Sept. 20, 2023.

The debate over whether discussions about race, inclusion, and LGBTQ+ issues belong in Forest Hills Schools was reignited after Superintendent Larry Hook made the decision to paint over a student-created mural at the start of the school year.

The mural depicted the hands of people of different races signaling love and solidarity surrounded by symbols of equality and acceptance of various sexual orientations.

Students at Nagel Middle School created the mural years ago, but when students returned to the building this year, some were surprised to see it covered by a banner promoting Forest Hills’s new “Culture Blueprint.” That banner was torn down. Shortly after, the mural was completely painted over, sparking outrage from some students and parents.

On the Forest Hills Schools’ website, the Culture Blueprint is described as a reminder to students to do their best and be mindful of others. But some say the superintendent’s actions send a different message.

Dozens showed up to Wednesday’s school board meeting holding signs of the mural. Parents and students spoke during public comment in opposition to the superintendent’s decision.

Forest Hills parent Jeff Nye addressed Hook directly, calling his response to the initial backlash childish.

“A 7th or 8th grade kid — 12- or 13-years-old — damaged that banner and that’s unacceptable and should be punished,” Nye said. “But before that happened, you had an opportunity to reflect and take action, value the feedback you received, to lead by example, to lead with humility, and say ‘I made a mistake, I shouldn’t have put it there,’ but you didn’t. You doubled down. You didn’t act like leader. You acted like a kid. You took your ball and you went home and I’m incredibly disappointed.”

High school student Norah Zellen also had strong words for Hook, saying that permanently covering the mural will have a more negative impact on students than district leaders thought.

“The mural exhibited a safe and inclusive learning environment, yet it was painted over. This action shows thoughtlessness, a lack of authenticity, and calls into question if the school board and superintendent want some students erased,” Zellen told Hook.

Hook was noticeably silent on the issue during the meeting. Each time the superintendent spoke about school matters, audience members held up signs of the mural.

During the meeting, board member Leslie Rasmussen called out the superintendent for his unwillingness to address the elephant in the room.

“Larry, you made a lot of wonderful comments about the awesome work our students are doing. I don’t want that to be overshadowed tonight or any time, but I want to take a moment to make sure you see all these students in the audience. They deserve acknowledgment,” Rasmussen said.

Hook responded, “I see them,” but made no further comments on the matter until questioned by reporters after the meeting.

Hook’s response

The superintendent defended the mural’s removal, saying despite the overwhelming opposition, most people in the Forest Hills community wanted to see it gone.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people who were very upset that it was there,” he said. “So, it’s kind of created this battle that shouldn’t even be in schools. We need to focus on our education. We need to focus on what’s important. That doesn’t mean we marginalize anybody.”

A small collection of adults also spoke during public comment defending Hook’s decision. One attendee, who took offense to parents and students supporting the mural, was removed by law enforcement after getting into a physical interaction with another audience member.

Read the full article. According to posts on social media today, the woman who snatched an audience member’s phone is the mother of Christianist school board member Katie Stewart, whose own children reportedly attend private Catholic school. At last night’s meeting Stewart wore a Gadsden flag t-shirt. The TikTok video below has gone viral.

She also laughed when a parent discussed her child’s suicide attempt and mocked students and other speakers

To me that’s even worse than the assault.

I wonder if it’s time to ressurect ACT UP! techniques? If this woman goes to church, perhaps go to the same church as disrupt the service: “WHAT DOES GOD THINK OF LAUGHING ABOUT SUICIDE ATTEMPTS?’

I think you could be right. These fascist goons need to be openly resisted.

Shaming on Twitter is considered a badge of honor and they have no shame. But to so in churches or in grocery stores or at their hairdressers, that will perhaps do more?

I’m thinking of the beardy guy that is in DC and always behind (the latest) republican politician accused of wrongdoing.

Thank you, but I’m thinking of a different guy. Older, white beard.

I wish we had more of ACT UP!’s spirit (and rage)!

Preach. I’ve been saying that for years now. Enough with the “talk alone will work” nonsense. ACT-UP and FIGHT BACK, not just pretty words.

Right? ACT UP wasn’t afraid to take on the churches. You do that when people are dying. We’ve already had a few killings (RIP, O’Shae Sibley). How many more will it take?

Very true. Back in the 80’s, we stormed Toronto’s St. Micheal’s Cathedral and dumped condoms on the altar because of the Church’s stance regarding their use, especially in preventing HIV/AIDS. We barricaded Conservative Pols Offices and, on more than one occasion, stood toe to toe with cops who wanted to fuck with us during marches…it didn’t end well for them. It was nothing for us to dump pink Jello by the bucket loads onto cop cars, Church steps, etc. We made a ruckus and did so until we were heard.

Long past time to teach society that lesson again. Direct Action Now.

I bet that this monster won’t even acknowledge the widespread pedophilia in churches, instead alleging that the “hoe-moes” are doing it.

We need to act up for sure and run for school board seats or get allies to run because imagine the lgbtq kids in that school seeing this how humiliating and hurtful. We need to stand up so they know to do the same when it’s their turn.

My Gawd! Hands of three different colors! Don’t they know Adam and Eve were White?

And Eve was transgender. She was a clone of a genetic male but expressed as female.

“Christianist school board member Katie Stewart, whose own children reportedly attend private Catholic school”

So it is none of her business what it happening at the school in question, but still finds herself in a position to dictate terms there. Just waiting for the cries of “I’m being silenced!”

This is happening all over the nation. Parents with kids in private schools are getting elected to public school boards.

They are stealth candidates, and few voters really pay attention to school board elections.

Where i live its practically impossible to find the backstory on school board candidates unless you know somebody who knows somebody who knows them. School board seats are classified as non-partisan, so you cant even go by party affiliation. Their websites & mailers are useless – so generic as to convey no useful info.

And don’t you love all the Gadsden Flag people? They are the ones who want to tread all over everyone else.

GED: torture, not treatment

This is the comment I left on Barry’s site.  You have no idea how much this upset me.   We must stop this.   Hugs

Hello Barry. I like this only because you are sharing it, not because I like what these bastards did to these children. This is abuse, child abuse, and detestable in every way imaginable. I am trying to write this through the tears running down my face. Barry what are the next steps, what about the appeals? This must be taken to the highest levels of the US government and to the US congress. Are any organizations raising money and fighting to get this changed? When you first mentioned this to me, I had no understanding how bad it was! I doubt many in our community of blog readers do. I am going to reblog this to my Playtime.  I know you left the link, that is how I got here, but by my dogs that love gravy this must be fought and stopped. As a person who suffered child abuse, I hate this with every fiber of my being. There has to be better, more humane, more educated ways to care for these children. Shocked for wetting the bed, WTF, there are many reasons people wet the bed even as adults! To be punished for doing it as you’re being punished is sadistic! I belong to a survivors forum and read of sadistic bastards like my childhood was filled with who would get off on doing this to a kid, to me! Sorry Barry, did not mean to get so upset or so … in your comment section. But to do this to children that can not help how they are born … Sorry I have to go, or I will say things you will have to censor. Best wishes, Scottie

This Rapping Preacher Is Selling Bleach to Parents Trying to ‘Treat’ Autism in Kids

https://www.vice.com/en/article/y3w5xw/this-rapping-preacher-is-selling-bleach-to-parents-trying-to-treat-autism-in-kids

This is horrendous.  It is caused by people who think they know more than the trained medical professionals because their favorite right wing talk show host tells them medical professionals are wrong.  Those hosts are in it for political reasons, and most of them got the vaccines so they know they are lying, but it doesn’t matter that people are dying because of their lies.  The people like this man selling bleach to cure autism are the same idiots that claim conversion therapy cures being gay.  Also I want to make as clear as possible, autism like being gay or trans is not something that needs a cure!  They are not diseases.  Now I don’t know much about the medical advice and special needs if any that autistic people need.  I do know many autistic people live happy productive lives while I have seen videos of kids in schools that need extra help.  The one to ask Is Barry.  Barry is a follower who comments often.  Barry is autistic.  He has helped me understand some of the bigotry, stigma, and torture done as treatment to neurodivergent people in an attempt to change them to act like others.  That type of conversion therapy is simply torture and won’t remove autism.  Again I did not know it was happening until Barry told me.  So if you have questions, hopefully Barry will see them and respond.  Hugs

YOUTUBE/JOE SALANT

Joe Salant, an evangelical pastor and rapper, is the new spokesman for Safrax, which makes bleach tablets that are popular with those who belief ingesting the industrial cleaner can cure a range of ailments.

David Gilbert

An evangelical pastor who briefly shot to fame in 2015 for recording a rap song in support of Sen. Ted Cruz is now selling industrial-strength bleach tablets to parents and has admitted that many of his customers are using the product  to treat autism in their children.

Joe Salant, who grew up in an affluent New Jersey family, became a born-again Christian after coming out of drug rehab when he was in his early twenties, having spent six months in jail for drug possession. Recently, he has become part of the American Renewal Project, which aims to have a pastor from “every church in America” run for elected office by 2024. Salant preaches a Christian nationalist ideology that positions the church at the heart of all aspects of American society.

In his spare time he continues to release rap records with titles like “Human Sacrifices” and “Dies in Vain,” in which he raps about child trafficking.

In recent months he’s taken on a new role as the U.S representative for a company called Safrax, which markets chlorine dioxide tablets that are advertised on the company’s website as industrial products for odor removal, disinfection, and as cleaners for hot tubs and jacuzzis.

But over the phone, Salant said many people are using the treatments in an attempt to treat autism in children.

“Autism? Yeah, I mean it’s a common treatment,” Salant said, according to a recording of a phone call obtained by Ireland-based activist Fiona O’Leary and shared with VICE News. “We’re not allowed to recommend [our products] for it specifically but yeah, the protocols in the Andreas Kalcker book [which] we have on our website… it’s commonly used for that.”

“Autism? Yeah, I mean it’s a common treatment. We’re not allowed to recommend [our products] for it specifically but yeah.”

Andreas Kalcker is one of the most notorious promoters of the pseudoscientific conspiracy theory that a form of bleach, known within that community as a miracle mineral solution (MMS) can be used as a treatment for a wide range of ailments, including cancer, HIV, and autism. In 2021, Argentinian authorities charged Kalcker with selling fake medicines to cure COVID-19 after a 5-year-old boy died from suspected chlorine dioxide poisoning. The case has yet to go to trial.

Safrax is the latest company to profit off the belief that ingesting industrial grade bleach can have health benefits, a conspiracy spread for years by conspiracy influencers like Kalcker and Jim Humble, who died earlier this month aged 99. Despite repeated warnings from the FDA about the dangers of using these so-called miracle mineral solutions (MMS), companies continue to cash in on vulnerable people searching for a cure for their ailments.

If you have any information about people using Safrax or any other type of chlorine dioxide to ‘treat’ ailments and would like to share the details with. VICE News, you can email david.gilbert@vice.com.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other public health bodies have repeatedly warned against the use of chlorine dioxide, labeling it “a powerful bleaching agent that has caused serious and potentially life-threatening side effects.”

“These bleachers are health terrorists, preying on the most vulnerable in our communities and making big profit poisoning people—the police, authorities must do more,” O’Leary, who has autistic children and has been campaigning against peddlers of chlorine dioxide for a decade, told VICE News. “Autistic children are being abused. Cancer patients are being poisoned and often walk away from scientifically proven treatments to ingest this lethal bleach. I watch these people die. It is heartbreaking.”

“Autistic children are being abused. Cancer patients are being poisoned and often walk away from scientifically proven treatments to ingest this lethal bleach.”

But for the Delaware-registered Safrax, which is now being promoted on Facebook and Telegram channels dedicated to sharing information about chlorine dioxide, business is booming.

A message on the Safrax website informs customers that there is a 2-4 week delay in sending out orders specifically due to overwhelming demand for the product as a result of the tablets being featured on the radio show of pseudoscience conspiracist Mike Adams.

Adams, who calls himself the Health Ranger, founded the notorious fake health news website NaturalNews, and has links to far-right figure Alex Jones and the extremist groups the Oath Keepers.

Salant claimed on the customer phone call that Safrax has no official relationship with Adams, but added that “we’re fans” of his show. This is a claim backed up by Safrax owner Steve Dan, who told VICE News via email that he had never heard of Adams prior to his mentioning Safrax on his show.

However, it is easy to see the impact that Adams’ endorsement has had: Some Adams listeners reported on private Facebook groups dedicated to sharing information about using bleach as medication that they bought the product after hearing his show.

In a post reviewed by VICE News, one purchaser wrote that she had taken the Safrax tablets and was now feeling unwell. “I can’t find any information about the dosage of the tablets… and I am currently sick. I tried dissolving one in a gallon [of water] and it tastes like pure bleach. I just wanna get well.”

“I can’t find any information about the dosage of the tablets… and I am currently sick. I tried dissolving one in a gallon [of water] and it tastes like pure bleach. I just wanna get well.”

Another member of the group responded by linking to the Safrax website, where the company recommends adding 30 tablets to a gallon of water. However, the original poster pointed out this dosage was for industrial use, adding: “I just don’t want to kill myself by drinking too much.”

Safrax was founded in 2011 by Dan, a French national who is also known as Steve Jean-Paul Dan. In 2005 he was arrested on three counts of felony financial transaction card fraud the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia confirmed to VICE News, and that case remains open to this day. Dan told VICE News he wasn’t aware the case was still open, and claimed he was arrested “merely because I was in the company of my friend who got arrested.”

For the last decade, Safrax has sold its chlorine dioxide tablets, which are produced in China, wholesale, marketing them as industrial cleaning products. Despite the recent popularity of his products within the bleacher community, Dan claims the company is not suggesting people use their products to cure medical issues.

“We explicitly advise against using our chlorine dioxide tablets for the treatment of any diseases or medical conditions,” Dan said. “If any such claims were made by Mr. Salant, that would not represent the views or recommendations of Safrax. We will investigate this internally and make the proper corrections.”

However the presence of Kalcker’s book on the company’s website suggests otherwise. The book, “Forbidden Health,” is one of the most widely read publications in the bleacher community, and contains an exhaustive list of the ailments Kalcker claims can be cured with bleach.

Dan dismissed the book’s presence on the Safrax site, telling VICE News it was there as “an effective SEO tool to enhance our site’s visibility.” On the phone call with O’Leary, Salant said he had read Kalcker’s book and “appreciates his work.”

When questioned about the credibility of Safrax’s owners in the phone call with a customer, Salant defends his boss, calling him a “very reputable person.” However, as well as the arrest in Georgia in 2005, a court in Hong Kong last year found that Dan had acted fraudulently by misappropriating bitcoins belonging to someone else. Dan told VICE News that the ruling “occurred because I couldn’t afford to hire an attorney.”

Salant said the company was planning on expanding its reach to Europe this month, but currently only ships to the United States and Canada. But, he said, many European customers are already circumventing this restriction by getting people living in the U.S. to purchase the tablets and mail them to Europe.

The tablets are stored in a distribution center in Green Bay, Wisconsin, according to Salant. But due to their recent increase in popularity among individuals rather than companies, he told VICE News, Safrax has found a new distribution center in Texas, which is due to open soon.

In an apparent attempt to make the company appear legitimate, Safrax has also sold its products with the logo of certification company NSF on its packaging, denoting that the brand has been accredited by the organization and is guaranteed safe. Dan claims that the company in the past had accreditation from NSF but had stopped in 2021 due to the high cost of maintaining it.

When asked to provide evidence of this certification, Dan failed to produce it, though admitted the company should not still be selling products with the NSF logo on its website.

NSF didn’t respond to VICE News’ request for comment but a notice published on the NSF website last year warned Safrax to remove the logo from its packaging.

The FDA declined to comment when VICE News asked if the agency was investigating Safrax for selling chlorine dioxide to people using it to treat autism or other ailments.

Multiple phone numbers listed on the Safrax website went unanswered when VICE News attempted to contact Salant this week, playing a recorded message from Salant asking customers to leave a message or send an email.

Um how does that not kill someone?

It’s a continuation of the long history of chemical and thermal burns being used to punish neuro-divergent children. Boy with development delays wets himself – – boiling water. Girl with ADHD touches herself – – apply lye. Kid’s been driven to the edge of catatonic schizophrenia by the abuse – – well, then they switch to nails and knives.

I remember a time when we didn’t have the warn the public to not ingest bleach.

It’s funny, parents who “child-proof” every cabinet with cleaning supplies would give their children…

“Sure my child still has autism, but he’s deodorized, disinfected, and smells like a Spring afternoon.”

Thumbnail

This isn’t funny; it’s child abuse. But because evangelical Christianity occupies such a privileged place in American society, no one will lay a finger on him.

Even worse, profiting from the abuse suffered by other people’s children through advocating the administration of sodium hypochlorite to treat (WTF?!?) an inherent characteristic as if it was, what, a symptom of something a little chlorox can clear up?

The arrogance of delusional Christ-o-freaks causes so much harm, yet seems quite lucrative to the predators with any influence over a malleable flock.

“That burning feeling from the bleach tabs is gawd’s love.” 🙄

Right-Wing Christians Must Indoctrinate Other People’s Children Into a Biblical Worldview, Says FRC’s George Barna

Notice the title specifies Indoctrinate Other People’s Children”.   These people don’t care about other parents rights to raise their children as they wish, they don’t care about other families religious views.   They are saying their long time actions in public schools out loud, to force their god, their religion, on everyone else.  Yet they are always claiming they are the victims, that they are being discriminated against.   The video is at the links,   Hugs

By Peter Montgomery | October 7, 2021 5:09 pm

Evangelical pollster George Barna spoke at FRC’s “Pray Vote Stand” conference on Oct. 7, 2021 (Image from event livestream)

While right-wing groups are mobilizing angry mobs to yell at school board members that parents have the right to control what their children are taught, evangelical pollster George Barna told religious-right activists at the Family Research Council’s “Pray Vote Stand” summit Thursday that it is their duty to try to indoctrinate other people’s children into a “biblical worldview.”

Barna, one of the first senior fellows at FRC’s recently established Center for Biblical Worldview, specializes in studying what he calls “SAGE Cons”—Spiritually Active Governance Engaged Conservative Christians. What is most striking about FRC and Barna’s “worldview” project is how few people—and how few conservative evangelicals—measure up to their right-wing “biblical worldview” standard.

When the Center for Biblical Worldview launched in May, FRC President Tony Perkins said that a biblical worldview “is only achieved when a person believes that the Bible is true, authoritative, and then taught how it is applicable to every area of life, which enables them to live out those beliefs.”

Barna told “Pray Vote Stand” attendees that only 6 percent of American adults measure up to that standard of a biblical worldview—and only one out of five people who attend an evangelical church.

“Biblically, it’s parents’ responsibility to shape their children’s worldview—both directly and indirectly,” Barna declared. But, he said, only 7 percent of parents with children under the age of 18 have a biblical worldview. That’s a problem that people with a biblical worldview must fix, he said:

That doesn’t portend well for the future because you can’t give what you don’t have. And so, the rest of us who do get it have to come alongside these children in some way. We’ve got to look for opportunities—sports teams, other kinds of activities that are taking place to help them shape things. You can’t wait for your church to get the job done.

This is a battle for the mind, the heart, and the soul of America, and so it’s up to you. It’s up to me—those of us who know God, love God, love Christ, read his word, study his word, embrace, embody his word—and to take that into the world in every way, shape, and form that we can.

Ultimately, we will win or lose this battle long term by what we do with children today. And so when you leave this conference, I’m asking you to think about making a list identifying the children whose lives you can impact. It is our biblical responsibility to raise up children to know, love, and serve God the all their heart, mind, strength, and soul, and I pray that you will do that with all the energy and wisdom that you can muster.

Barna’s PowerPoint slide hammered home his message that parents without a biblical worldview have “neither the vision nor the equipping” to “raise spiritual champions.” That means, it said, “True Christians must seize the moment … Go, make disciples!”

In 2017, Barna spoke at the Values Voter Summit—FRC’s annual gathering that has been rebranded as Pray Vote Stand—and told participants that the 2016 election was a “Christians vs. non-Christians” election and that Trump became president because “God did a miracle for us.”

Hate Group Summit Speaker Calls On Christians To Indoctrinate School Children Into “Biblical Worldview”

https://x.com/RightWingWatch/status/1702703674789666842?s=20

“Pray Vote Stand” is the new name for the FRC’s annual “Values Voter Summit.” Many prominent extremists and GOP elected officials are scheduled speakers over the next three days.

Indoctrinate, another word for (wait for it) grooming!

Wait a minute. Aren’t they against indoctrination?

I think you know the answer. And of course, our side doesn’t indoctrinate, we educate.

LGBTQ+ people exist. A fact. sharing this information is education, not indoctrination.

LGBTQ+ people are evil and groomers. An (incorrect) opinion and when forced into children’s minds until they accept it as fact, is indoctrination.

Why does this six percent and falling of the US think they have the right to impose their sicko abusing religion on everyone else’s kids?

Because none of the other kids parents are showing up to demand anything different. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. The fascist are making all these demands and moves basically unopposed. The parents of the kids in the schools affected have to take a stand

I wouldn’t say lack of opposition, the Christians just do the yelling and threatening and blackmailing and corrupting and assaulting.

Control and domination by the GQP, not representation of our values in Congress. This is the GQP and Magabillies goal.

Because they are right and everyone else is WRONG! /s

The idea of a dominionist country scares me, and it should scare you too.

The thing is, they’re getting elected to local school boards all over the country where they can implement their religious agenda

In othernews, “Prager U” materials have been picked up by a third state. They aren’t even remotely hiding the 7 Hills anymore.

First, let’s call this what it is…grooming
Second, if they don’t groom children into biblical world views, they won’t have them…and that scares the shit out of biblical peons.

They see their own children as chattel

One way they’ll do it is with that PragerU propaganda. While it’s “optional” for use in Oklahoma now I bet it will be mandatory soon.

They will threaten to dissolve any local school district who refuses to use that crap with state takeover.

Look for that garbage to spread to other states (especially red ones) fast.

Can we stone Boebert as an adulteress? Biblical purists need to know.

and kristi Noem.

And MTG, Trump, Schlapp…

Be sure to include Gingrich too, the list goes on and on.

Yup, the list is quite long.

Quite a pious group they are. Forming the idiot evangelical base like a potter forms clay.

Paxton! How could you forget Paxton?!?!

How Conservatives Sabotage Public Schools

Very informative how conservative and fundamentalist religious leaders have been attacking the public school system with disastrous results.  She does talk rapidly but the CC is pretty good for YouTube.  Hugs

Public education is under attack from all sides in this country, typically at the hands of a few wealthy and powerful conservatives who stand to benefit from the failure of public education at the expense of children and teachers.

Florida DOE releases list of books banned from schools in 2022

https://www.wtsp.com/article/news/education/florida-banned-more-than-300-books-from-schools/67-4643cdf2-777b-4805-aae4-e22485285fda

The people pushing these bans to remove any LGBTQIA representation from schools and libraries are a very small vocal minority using the laws that DeathSantis along with his fellow fundamentalist Christian ideological bigots implemented just for this purpose.  This is what the republicans wanted.  I get so tired of repeating my self, but this small minority wants to rule over the majority, return society to 1950 basically wiping any LGBTQIA from society or public view. Please remember these books are not intended nor available to younger kids, these are for teenagers, 13 and up.  In one case it says for 17 and up.  I have news for everyone, 13 years are ready to read these books and may desperately need to read them.  Plus most kids that old have free access to internet or a friend that has it, and studies show that by 13 kids have watched and viewed porn along with nude human pictures. Here is an example of two people, yes just two people pushing their idea of moral values on everyone else, regardless of the wishes of the other people.  This is fundamental Christian Taliban in action.  Hugs

School district officials responded to more than 1,200 book objections.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — According to a list released by Florida’s Department of Education, school districts across the state issued a combined total of 386 book bans after receiving a total of 1,218 objections in 2022.

A small movement

According to a recent analysis by the Tampa Bay Times, more than half of the objections were raised by the same two people: Bruce Friedman, the founder of the Florida chapter of the activist group No Left Turn in Education, and Vicki Baggett.

He reportedly got titles from an internet database and photocopied thousands of objections with vague complaints like “Protect Children!” and “Damaged Souls!”.

Baggett submitted hundreds of complaints of “indoctrination” and apparently copied from book reviews on BookLooks.org, a book challenging group founded by a member of Moms for Liberty, the Times found.

And of the 386 book bans issued last year, 300 of them covered only three school districts: Clay County where Friedman lives (177 books banned), Martin County (98) and Manatee County (25). There are 67 school districts in Florida altogether. Fifty-one of those districts (including Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, and Citrus counties) did not remove a single book from school shelves in 2022.

5 controversial titles

The titles that were removed from schools often varied by school district despite the fact that efforts to get specific titles banned made national headlines. Such was the case with “And Tango Makes Three,” “Let’s Talk About It” and “This Book is Gay” (which was also the only title Hillsborough County schools banned last year).

Even so, the controversy around some titles reached far enough to get them removed from multiple counties:

  1. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas – The popular series of adult fantasy novels about a young woman who is taken to a faerie kingdom at war was a New York Times Bestseller. The books are intended for adults 17 or older as they contain sex scenes and abusive relationships. However, it is unclear whether school libraries even carried these books in the first place.

  2. Lucky by Alice Sebold – The memoir written by the author of the book “The Lovely Bones” detailed her rape and brutal assault and how surviving it shaped the rest of her life. The memoir generated attention in Florida after Friedman objected to the book’s graphic descriptions of sexual assault at a school board meeting in November. The board cut his mic before he could read a passage from it.

  3. L8r, G8r by Lauren Myracle – The third book in Myracle’s famous “Internet Girls” series, which told coming-of-age stories for young girls written entirely in internet-speak and instant messages, was removed from multiple schools for its use of profanity and its depictions of adult sexuality as part of its plot.

  4. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews – A novel about a socially awkward high school senior who, along with his friend and fellow amateur filmmaker, befriends a classmate who is dying of leukemia. Though the novel was well-received, schools have banned it due to complaints about sexually explicit content.

  5. The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur – Canadian poet Kaur’s second book of poetry was the follow-up to “Milk and Honey,” which became one of the most widely banned books in the U.S. due to its explorations of difficult subjects like sexual assault, trauma, abuse and family issues. Her second collection, which featured more poems touching on abuse, healing from trauma, infanticide and other touchy subjects, was pulled from schools due largely to the controversy “Milk and Honey” generated.

In the upside-down, through-the-looking-glass world that is DeSantis’s Florida, what should be condemned as an abomination is touted as an accomplishment.

And to think when I was a teen growing up in Houston I read ‘The Chants of Maldoror’ which I checked out at the public library. People didn’t make a fuss about books back then. Once in a while my mom would read a Truman Capote book and make a face. I think most parents were just pleased that their kids read anything.

Two. Fucking. People.

There’s no liberty in those clowns who were whining for religious liberty. They’re just despicable.

They don’t want liberty, they want total enforced hegemony.

They banned Bernard Malamud’s “The Fixer”. That book is a Pulitzer Prize winning classic…and I doubt any single one of these philistine chucklefucks even know what it’s about.
(It’s about antisemitism in Tsarist Russia, by the way.)

You think DeSantis wants kids reading about how antisemitism is bad?

Of course they banned Handmaid’s Tale.

Manatee County is listed as having banned Raina Telgemeir’s innocuous graphic novel Drama BECAUSE OF THIS PAGE.

HE SAID GAY1!1!!

And is happy about it. Can’t have that!

Two individuals people dictating what a state may read. Florida is fucked

Banning books is fascism. There’s no question in my mind. Florida is becoming a fascist state.

Becoming? It is!

I didn’t read ‘Flowers for Algernon’ until I was grown up but I found it very thought-provoking –
Oh, I see the problem there.

Last week in Dallas it was 110 degrees. Today/tomorrow in Florida it is 451.

The temperature paper bursts into flame

It’s disgusting that 2 people can hold so much power over the parents of children that just want to go to school to learn REGULAR educational cirriculum, and not be dictated to by Christofasicst Theocratic wanna be’s that are determined to take this country back 150 years!

Same disgust that one senator can basically bring the armed forced to a halt.

Judy Blume asks everyone to Unite Against Book Bans

If anyone has become legendary due to the hatred of moral busybodies, it’s definitely her. She’s not only one of the pioneers of realistic YA fiction, she’s also one of the most widely banned.

It’s all about sex education, gays, trans, and other LGBTQ+ types being people and finding love and acceptance throughout the pages. Stuff Christofacists hate, yet they do anyway as they target boys and girls for sex both off and online.

So Florida is hostage to two cranks. I’m a bit surprised that De Spotic didn’t assign this power to himself or his immediate cronies, and not some upstarts.

Is the christian bible on that list? Because that book offends the fuck out of me.

Right, because book-banning, like prohibition, always works out so well. Usually they have the opposite effect.

More Florida Christian Nazis doing more Nazi-ing and saying ‘What Nazis? We’re not doing these things we’re so loudly doing!”
