Florida Cities Raise Pride Flags Over City Halls After Failed GOP Attempt To Ban Them From Govt Buildings

The good people are fighting back now. DeathSantis and his fundamentalist minority have pushed decent people too far. But look for a response from the right wing shock troops, the Proud Boys, the militias, the other right wing gang thugs. Hugs. Scottie

Tampa’s WMNF reports:

Several Tampa Bay area cities have raised the LGBTQ Pride flags over city buildings this weekend. But that would have been illegal if a bill that died in this year’s Florida Legislature had instead become law.

On Saturday morning the city of Gulfport in south Pinellas County raised the Pride flag over its public library. It came after a short ceremony of speeches honoring the city’s commitment to equality and before a day-long block party celebration of Pride.

The nearby City of St. Petersburg raised its LGBTQ Pride flag over City Hall on Friday. Meanwhile, the City of Clearwater will host Pride events but will not fly the Pride flag at a city building.

Also raising the Pride flag over their city halls this weekend were Tampa, Wilton Manors, Miami, and Orlando. If you know of any others, let us know in the comments.

The Republican bill to ban Pride flags at government buildings passed earlier this year in the Florida House, but died when the state Senate ran out of time to vote on the issue before the session ended for the year.

Of note, an amendment to the Senate version of the bill would have allowed the Confederate flag, something its sponsor later claimed was as “error.”

Funny how the party that’s always going on about the First Amendment and free speech is always trying to ban speech they don’t like, in this case flying a flag.

“Freedom” to the fascists means “You are FREE to do what WE tell you to do.”

This is vivid example of what I said yesterday about opposing a gay tourism boycott of Florida. Aside from the fact that countless of our people make their money that way, the major cities in Florida, most of which are run by Democrats, are overwhelmingly on our side.

While boycotts hurt the wrong people many of us trans folk do not feel safe traveling to any state that has bathroom ban legislation on the books.

Very understandable. And as I also said yesterday, I completely understand why gay families with children would choose to leave the state.

AND you (and all of us) can be refused medical care. What if I get food poisoning, have car accident? And gay-bashed. I won’t want someone’s ‘sincere’ religious beliefs to interfere with my ‘sincere’ desire to stay alive and healthy.

I was just in a Tires Plus shop to replace a tire. I had to use the bathroom, so I asked where it was. The guy at the desk pointed to it, and said it was the door to the left. It was marked Ladies!!! The men’s bathroom was out of order, and the guy told me that it was “Uni-sex”!!!

I replied, that I am glad for the Democracy and Equaiity!!!

I was in the Eureka/Arcata/McKinleyvillle area of northern California last weekend and every restaurant bathroom I went into was M/F/Who Cares? As they should be.

Bootsy is stamping his little high heeled lifts like a toddler having a tantrum….

TX Professors Sue To Flunk Women Who Get Abortions

I recommend going to the linked article. It has a lot of information on the lawsuit and how petulant the two men are. Here are some quotes. Much more at the Salon link. Hugs. Scottie

Even though the plaintiffs suing for the right to flunk female students for abortion include boilerplate arguments in which they feign concern that abortion is “killing,” the legal filing makes it clear that what really outrages Bonevac and Hatfield is that Title IX prevents them from controlling the private lives of students. Along with their anger about abortion, they grouse about not being allowed to punish students “for being homosexual or transgender.” They also argue they should be able to penalize teaching assistants for “cross-dressing,” by which they appear to mean allowing trans women to wear skirts.

As Jessica Valenti at Abortion, Every Day wrote, the language of the legal complaint is “downright petulant.” The picture painted is of two men obsessed with controlling student lives based on what they’re packing inside their underwear. It should be common sense that college students should be graded on their performance in class, not whether or not their professor resents their sex life or sexual identity. Alas, because the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and Texas banned abortion, it’s created a pretext for every busybody who wants to spend less time grading papers and more time working himself into an angry froth over the imagined sexual exploits of his students.

Even though Bonevac and Hatfield work in Austin, Texas, they filed their lawsuit 486 miles away in Amarillo, Texas. The reason for this is not mysterious: Donald Trump-appointed judge Matthew Kacsmaryk. The right-wing judge has a long and frankly unhinged history of screeching at top volume about the evils of “sexual revolutionaries.” (Yes, that does sound like a compliment, but he doesn’t mean it as such.) It takes very little to draw Kacsmaryk’s sexualized condemnation. Premarital sex, for instance, makes one a “sexual revolutionary.” Using contraception within marriage also makes one an irredeemable pervert. In his legal writings, Kacsmaryk is very clear that sex is only for procreation within marriage, and anything outside of that should draw legal sanction. He has not weighed in on whether there should be restrictions on what sexual positions are legally permissible within the procreation-only marital sex, but give him time.

Salon reports:

“Pregnancy is not a disease, and elective abortions are not ‘health care,’” University of Texas at Austin professor Daniel Bonevac sneers in a federal court filing with professor John Hatfield. Instead, Bonevac writes, because pregnancy is the result of “voluntary and consensual sexual intercourse,” students should not be allowed time off to get abortions.

If the students disobey and miss class for abortion care, the filing continues, the professors should be allowed to flunk students.

The reason for this is not mysterious: Donald Trump-appointed judge Matthew Kacsmaryk. Read the full article. No paywall.

Bonevac [screenshot above] can be seen in the October 2016 video below expressing his devotion to Trump.

Judge Kacsmaryk, a former lawyer for an anti-LGBTQ hate group, was exposed last year for failing to disclose millions in stock holdings.

Kacsmaryk was previously exposed for failing to disclose virulently anti-LGBTQ interviews and acting to hide his authorship of an anti-abortion article ahead of his Senate confirmation hearing.

More recently, he upheld a ban on drag shows at a Texas university. Kacsmaryk’s ruling to ban abortion pills is pending before the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments on the issue in March.

Doctors face tough decision to leave states with abortion bans
https://abcnews.go.com/US/d…

Sure, but there’s nobody left to care for the women who can’t easily travel to another state to see a doctor.

Where are the new Ann Richards and Molly Ivins? This shit is so whack.

Texas Republicans have gerrymandered and purged voter rolls to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

Remember folks, if you find out during a wanted, planned pregnancy that the fetus is dead and CHOOSE to terminate, that’s an “elective abortion.” These people are as ignorant as they are cruel.

Whenever marriage equality comes up, they all scream about how gay marriage means the end of the human race bc children. So now they want to make it impossible to get an abortion, which means more people will be using contraception. Then they want to eliminate contraception to increase births, many of which will be unwanted.
But that’s the best I can figure their plan is.

How Boring LGBTQ People Made America Great

I want to thank Ali for the link to this story. I will try to post the comment she left pointing me to it. I do not mind a link here or there in the comments if it leads me to new good article on issues. Ali has offered me many links in the comments and all of them so far have been worth reading, and yes many I end up posting like this one. Thank you Ali. Hugs Scottie Below is Ali’s comment.

All is well. So many things tend to work out for the very best.

Here’s a new link. I’ve been reading Oliver Willis for years, and I really like his work. You’ve probably seen his work around. I now subscribe (for free) to his work on Substack, and here is the one he posted today. Florida leads the nation in destroying public education

I thank Ten Bears for the link. His link below. I think the article speaks for itself and I do not need to add anything. Hugs. Scottie

no image description availableGov. Ron DeSantis speaking at an elementary school in Florida, where teachers’ salaries are now the lowest in the nation.

Six states have now passed universal school choice programs, but Florida has been singularly effective at accomplishing what Republicans have had near the top of their agenda for decades: destroying public education.

As The Hill reports, public schools in Florida are shutting down in multiple districts due to a rapid loss of students. Meanwhile, private school enrollment is up by more than 50,000 students, and charter schools have picked up 68,000. Homeschooling has increased by 58.6%, which would likely be even higher if parents weren’t competing for a limited number of available homeschool vouchers. Despite those vouchers expanding by 40,000 a year, they still can’t keep up with demand.

No other state has seen anything even close to this vast shift away from public education.

So why are Florida Republicans so successful in reducing public school enrollment? Because they did their homework. They spent decades draining public school funding, making them poorly staffed, poorly run, and an overall miserable place to get an education. Then they created a voucher system that offers parents unmatched goodies for joining in the enterprise of keeping children ignorant while making right-wing “education” providers rich.

The reason that Republicans want to destroy public education has never been much of a mystery. As Barbara Miner at Rethinking Schools puts it:

 1. Education is a multibillion-dollar market, and the private sector is eager to get its hands on those dollars.

 2. Conservatives are devoted to the free market and believe that private is inherently superior to public.

 3. Shrinking public education furthers the Republican Party goal of drastically reducing the public sector.

 4. Privatization undermines teacher unions, a key base of support for the Democratic Party.

 5. Privatization rhetoric can be used to woo African American and Latino voters to the Republican Party.

If that’s not enough, most private schools are Christian, so many of them propagate a conservative view of history and science that Republicans fully favor. Of the parents who have pulled their kids from public schools for homeschooling, 91% describe themselves as Christians, and many popular homeschool curricula radically whitewash historydeny climate change and evolution, and are simply awful.

Few states have matched Florida when it comes to undermining public schools to make the alternatives look better.

In 2007, Florida’s investment in public education was about average. The state had one of the worst high school graduation rates in the nation and poor student performance in science, but those numbers were improving. But they didn’t keep improving.

Florida began cutting its investment in public education, becoming one of the most drastically underfunded states over the last decade. Florida now has the lowest teacher salaries in the nation, and is ranked No. 48 in spending per student.

The state did institute a funding program that rewards businesses with tax breaks for educational investments—so long as those investments go to voucher programs. As a result, the program simultaneously feeds private schools by directly putting money in their pockets and starves public schools through loss of tax funding.

While Florida Republicans have been unwilling to invest in teachers or students, they have been more than willing to spend time and money on policing school libraries and making Christian nationalism a core tenet of the curriculum.

Florida has imposed new history standards that require teachers to tell students that Black people benefited from slavery and that Black people are responsible for the Tulsa massacre. Some entire subjects have even been banned from Florida classrooms.

Additionally, teachers have been banned from using preferred names and pronouns. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis pioneered “don’t say gay” laws and spent money settling lawsuits rather than educating students.

The combination of low teacher pay, poor student investment, harsh state oversight, and a restrictive curriculum that cripples students’ ability to learn has all but destroyed Florida’s public schools. It’s not hard to understand why parents and students would want something better. They deserve something better.

This is exactly how Florida created unprecedented demand for alternatives.

As a bonus for parents who choose to homeschool their children, the state is willing to cover Disney passes and giant televisions. No questions asked. So it’s absolutely no surprise that Florida’s available homeschool vouchers were all snatched up for this school year and are expected to double next year.

But Florida isn’t the only state that has caught onto the make-it-terrible-and-they-will-leave system of driving kids to private schools. Tennessee now comes in just ahead of Florida on spending per student, and ranks No. 44 on teacher pay. Tennessee’s Republican legislature is considering the unprecedented step of turning down federal funding for education in hope of evading federal requirements on education. Not even Florida went that far.

Fortunately for Tennessee children, the legislature broke into factions and failed to pass Gov. Bill Lee’s voucher plan this year. But it will surely try again next year.

And Tennessee can always look to Florida as its model.

Analysis Finds Finds No Negative Effects On Straight Marriages Since Courts Legalized Same-Sex Marriage

RainbowFlag-1-2

Axios reports:

The U.S. has not seen any negative effects on marriage, divorce or living arrangements among all couples since Massachusetts issued the first state-sanctioned, same-sex marriage licenses 20 years ago, a new analysis says.

A review of nearly 100 studies examining the consequences of same-sex marriage on multiple measures of family formation and well-being found no harm to different-sex unions, a report from RAND and UCLA found.

The analysis found that after states legalized marriage for same-sex couples, marriage numbers jumped in those states at rates greater than what could be accounted for by the new marriages of same-sex couples alone. Researchers found no consistent evidence of an increase in divorce as a consequence of legalizing marriage for same-sex couples.

Read the full article. Hate groups warned back then and continue to claim today that same-sex marriage would result in the destruction of the “natural family.” Some, such as the Liberty Counsel, have claimed that same-sex marriage laws legalized pedophilia, bestiality, and incest marriages. Last month the Liberty Counsel declared that the still unfolding 2015 Kim Davis case will soon be before the Supreme Court.

Fundamentalists prophesy doom to scam money out of the unwitting?

I’m shocked!

Hate is quite profitable: Valentina Gomez, Chaya Raichik, Tony Perkins, Maggie Gallagher, Anita Bryant, Candace Owens, Michelle Malkin, Rupert Murdoch, the list is endless.

If anyone’s straight cishet marriage is threatened by anyone else marrying, something is wrong with that relationship!

I’d like to see a comparison of divorce rates over the last 20 years, same sex couples vs opposite sex couples.

The Evangelicals and the hardcore Right Wing crazies are so obsessed with the sex life of LGBT people that they usually FAIL to take care of their own lives, how many of the more outspoken Anti Gay activists have been divorced, cheated on their spouse with someone else, have been caught soliciting sex from both men and women? They have nothing better to do with their sad pathetic lives than to focus on someone else’s.

I’ll never forget former Congressman Barney Frank asking one of his homophobic colleagues in the House how Frank’s gay marriage adversely affected his colleague’s marriage. The answer, of course, was silence.

He also had a grand ol’ reaction when someone asked him about non-heteros showering or taking a piss next to the straights: “What do you think has been happening for years?”

I always got a kick out of Barney Frank.

Remember whenDick Armey called him ‘Barney Fag’ and then tried to excuse it away by saying it was a ‘mispronunciation’? Barney’s reply was the best:
“I rule out that it was an innocent mispronunciation,” said Barney Frank from his office this week, reflecting on the slur that shook the 104th Congress. “I turned to my own expert, my mother, who reports that in 59 years of marriage, no one ever introduced her as Elsie Fag.”
https://www.nytimes.com/199…

As if that’s going to stop them from still trying to overturn Obergefell.

The GQP also said it would lead to child marriage, knowing that it was already legal in a number of states AND that the GQP is still trying to stop proposed bans on the practice.

But of course this evidence is completely meaningless because it doesnt fit the evangelical victim mindset.

Gay, lesbian and intersex whales: our queer sea has much to teach us

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2024/mar/01/documented-sex-male-humpback-whales-gay-lesbian-nonbinary-queer-cetaceans-sexuality?CMP=GTUS_email

Ali sent me this link on March 1st. Told you I have a lot of very old tabs just hang on because I want so badly to read them plus all the new ones I can’t keep up with. Thank you Ali. Hugs. Scottie

The first documented sex between two male humpback whales is just the latest challenge to our presumptions about sexualitya male humpback whale penetrating another male

 • The sighting near Hawaii in 2022 of a male humpback whale penetrating another male has been confirmed in a new study.

Whales are extraordinarily sensuous creatures. Those blubbery bodies are highly sensitive, and sensitised. At social meetings, pods of sperm, humpback and right whales will roll around one another’s bodies for hours at a time. I’ve seen a group of right whales engaged in foreplay and penetration lasting an entire morning

I have also watched a male-female couple so blissfully conjoined that they appeared unbothered by our little fishing boat as they passed underneath it. And in what may sound like a career of cetacean voyeurism, I have also been caught up in a fast-moving superpod of dusky dolphins continually penetrating each other at speed, regardless of the gender of their partner.

That’s why this week’s report of the first scientifically documented male-to-male sexual interactions between two humpback whales off the coast of Hawaii is not surprising.

The remarkable image of a two-metre whale penis entering another male “leaves little room for discussion that there is a sexual component to such behaviour”, as one whale scientist, Jeroen Hoekendijk at the Wageningen Marine Research institute in the Netherlands, notes drily.

In fact, one of the whales was ailing and there has been speculation that the encounter may not have been consensual or that the healthy whale was actually giving comfort to the other. Whatever the truth, such “flagrant” acts also expose many of our human presumptions about sexuality, gender and identity.

Off the north-west Pacific coast of the US, male orcas often leave family pods to rub their erections against each other’s bellies. But females have also reportedly been seen engaging in sexual contact with one another, too.

Indeed, the graphic accounts of male-to-male behaviour may mask many “unseen” female-to-female sexual interactions.

Dr Conor Ryan, an honorary research fellow at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, notes: “It’s easy to visibly identify male ‘homosexual’ sex when an extruded penis can be two metres long.” It is less easy to diagnose when female sperm whales are seen “cuddling”, as Hoekendijk observes.

A humpback whale’s penis entering another male. Same-sex behaviour has often been observed in cetaceans. Photograph: Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano/Marine Mammal Science

Ryan has often witnessed same-sex behaviour between whales and dolphins. “I am interested in the things that we miss,” he says. He has recorded competitive behaviour by humpback whales in groups that seemed to be typically male, such as pursuing other whales.

But they proved, from DNA samples, to be genetically female. He speculates that humpback females may even use whale song – hitherto thought to be the province of mating males.

“If I were a female being harassed by horny males, maybe I would sing too,” says Ryan. “To attract more females, to take attention off me, while masquerading as a male.”

These observations throw up new ideas about the way these animals behave. Whale society is almost overwhelmingly matriarchal. Female sperm whales, for example, travel in large groups – sometimes thousands strong – in which males are only “useful” for their sperm, visiting the groups briefly, then leaving the females to their own society.

Male-oriented science has in the past made various judgments regarding sexual behaviour. But the idea of lesbian whales should not be surprising. Ryan even cites the case of a “non-binary” beaked whale, which was discovered to have both male and female genitalia.

Even identifying as a species can be fluid for cetaceans. In 2022, near Caithness in Scotland, a bottlenose dolphin was found to be identifying as a porpoise, swimming with a pod of porpoises and using their vocalisations. In one of the great queer pairings of the 20th century, Virginia Woolf referred to her lover, Vita Sackville-West, as “my porpoise”.

We cannot know how whales and dolphins themselves regard genital interactions. But in most cases they appear to enjoy them – without, perhaps, the preconceptions we humans as a species have historically projected upon such behaviour. They may make great clickbait on social media, but they have an important relevance for us, too.

When the Canadian biologist Bruce Bagemihl published his book Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity – listing 450 species exhibiting such behaviour, including whales and dolphins – it was used in evidence in a US supreme court case in 2003 that struck down, as unconstitutional, homophobic “sodomy” laws being used in Texas.

It is telling, too, that the best-known work of literary fiction written about whales, Herman Melville’s 1851 novel Moby-Dick, is a decidedly queer book. Melville conflates the queerness and diversity of his characters – his narrator, Ishmael, is declared married to his shipmate, the multi-tattooed Queequeg, based on a Māori warrior – with the mysterious sensuality of the whales he is describing. He even spends an entire chapter describing a whale’s foreskin, with joyful innuendo.

The sea itself seems to be a queer place, where gender is at best a slippery notion at times. Slipper shells stuck together on the beach, which you might find when beachcombing, are in fact changing sex, from female at the bottom to male at the top. Cetaceans’ genitals are concealed, in any case, in genital slits. Sleek and streamlined, it is as if bothersome sexual definitions were overtaken by the sheer beauty of wondrous hydrodynamics.

So much of what we project on to whales and dolphins is about our own complexes. They seem to lead a free and easy life. They may not possess hands to manipulate, but they have the biggest brains on the planet, and highly sensual bodies to match. Having been around for millions of years, it is tempting to imagine their long-evolved existence as one that is beyond all the things that seem to hold us humans back.

Philip Hoare is the author of several books, including Leviathan, The Sea Inside, and Albert and the Whale

Over the last few days I have been busy trying to read news and set up new browsers. Here are some links to Joe My God stories that stood out for their pushing Christian hate on everyone. Plus some other hates from the tRump cult.

Little claims he’s been targeted for harassment and retaliation over his lawsuit. He’s being represented by the anti-LGBTQ hate group, the Thomas More Society, who claims that Little has a First Amendment right not to have the flag within his sight.

Per reports, Little’s salary is more than $200,000. In 2021, a Long Beach lifeguard tower decked out for Pride was destroyed in arson, much to the delight of commenters on the YouTube clip below.
Last year the group’s founder claimed to The Federalist that his foie gras business was boycotted by local restaurants after he posted an anti-LGBTQ screed on Instagram, putting his family in a “dire financial situation.” In the clip below, he talks about that supposed betrayal and rants about “sexual degeneracy.”

Cultists are also raging in the comments of Walmart’s Instagram post. Sample reply: “Walmart and Pride whatever it is, I hate all this because you glorify everything in this world except what God has created to be from the beginning, which is a family, man married to a woman and their children!! Why don’t you give a true family unit a special month??? This evil agenda to shove all that’s unnatural down our throat will be your downfall one day!! God will not be mocked!! Yes, everyone has a right to choose how you live but why does it have to be glorified for a month??? Just wrong!!!”

If the goal was to make “Pride” toxic for brands, as conservative Matt Walsh urged, then mission accomplished. Now, thanks to Bud Light and so many other casualties of excessive Pride, Americans have started to realize how much power they have to change the corporate landscape.

And now for the tRump cult out cries about that guilty verdict.

I love how every accusation they make about Biden and the democrats / left turns out to be a confession by the republicans. For example they claim that Biden has weaponized the Department Of Justice and is controlling the AG Merrick Garland. But the republicans and trump have been calling for the locking up of his pollical opponent since his first run in 2016. He and his supporters have long called for locking up Biden. These people don’t want to run a country, they want to rule the country and everyone in it. They want to raid the treasury and hammer anyone who tries to stop them. Simply put they wrongly claim no one has ever been charged with this same crime, but it has been charged over 9,000 times. But they are now a cult and if the dear leader says it it must be so, reality be damned. Hugs. Scottie

JMG: Regarding Kelly’s lie about E. Jean Carroll, New York’s 2022 Adult Survivors Act was certainly not passed with her in mind and in fact resulted in lawsuits against former New York Gov. believe that the woman in the back shouting “fuck the king and the queen” is the same one seen below bouncing her enormous bare tits earlier today.

The Washington Post has a fact check:

Trump called it ridiculous, unconstitutional and un-American “that the highly Conflicted, Radical Left Judge is not requiring a unanimous decision on the fake charges against me.” At first glance, it might appear that the former president doesn’t understand one of the basic tenets of the legal system: that guilty verdicts in criminal cases have to be unanimous.

The jury must be unanimous when it comes to determining whether Trump is guilty or not guilty of each specific falsifying business records count, and whether he did so in an effort to unlawfully impact an election, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan said.

He added, however, that the panel did not have to be unanimous about which of those three types of crimes could serve as the underlying violation that brings the state election charge into play. In Trump’s case, prosecutors have offered three types of crimes that would make the state election-meddling charge come into play: federal election law crimes, tax crimes or false business records.

Leavitt went on to claim that President Joe Biden has targeted “innocent” Americans such as the Jan. 6 rioters charged for their roles in the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol. “They’ve thrown [them] in the gulag in Washington, D.C.,” said Leavitt, who added that Trump said he’d pardon the rioters on “day one” of a second term.

And now for a few just off the wall … weird world. Hugs. Scottie

Rumors of Trump using the N-word during production of The Apprentice have swirled for years. Executive producer Mark Burnett has long refused to release any outtakes from the show. In 2018, Trump tweeted that the N-word “does not exist in my vocabulary and never has” and that Burnett backs him on this “fake news.”
