Bezos and Bridges

Bridges are literally crumbling and falling apart in the United States from decades of neglect. One of President Joe Biden’s accomplishments was the infrastructure package he signed into law last November. On the same day the president was visiting Pittsburgh, a bridge in that city collapsed. Over 45,000 bridges in this nation have been graded in “poor condition.”

Mega-billionaire Jeff Bezos pays very little in taxes if any at all, so despite being worth over $183 billion, he’s not contributing to repairing our infrastructure. But, while not paying to repair bridges in his country, he will pay to dismantle them in Rotterdam, where the citizens are telling him he can just go and rot the fuck off.

The mega-billionaire is having a 417-foot mega-yacht built in Alblasserda, a city in the Netherlands. For it to reach the ocean after it’s completed, it’ll have to pass under the Koningshaven lift bridge…

    1. Hello Jill. One of the news shows I watched this morning talked about Amazon’s taxes. A global watchdog group has revealed that Amazon dodged almost $5 billion in federal income taxes over the past 10 years and has been taxed at a rate of just 5.1% over the past four years.

      1. That is criminal!!! My conscience is not clear, either, as I still rely heavily on Amazon, especially since the pandemic and my own illness. I order most all of my household cleaning supplies from them every month, plus an assortment of other things including ebooks for my kindle. I really should find another source, for I have zero respect for Bezos and until we all take a stand, Amazon will continue to thrive and dodge taxes and Bezos will continue being the wealthiest, greediest piece of crap in the world! Sigh. Hugs

            1. But it is much more than convenience. I use Amazon because it is the place I can quickly price shop and get the lowest price. It is like Walmart which I hate with a passion, but my spouse still grocery shops there as we are on a fixed income and shopping there for some things saves us lots of money. On that score I give Ron a lot of credit, he knows the local stores and he knows how to hit the sales and bargains of each. So while I use Amazon I can still call for the company to treat workers better and to have more progressive environmental polices. As users we can push for a better company.

              1. Good points, Scottie! I thought Ron was still working … has he now retired? I haven’t set foot in a Wal-Mart for years, primarily because of the way they treated a close friend of mine when she worked there, but I cannot seem to wean myself from Amazon. And plastic water bottles is my other downfall … but I am planning to buy a distiller and get away from all the plastic. On a more positive note, I do use reusable grocery and produce bags! You’re right, though, we need to keep fighting for these companies to treat their employees much better!

                1. Re: those plastic water bottles — look into the aluminum ones. Also, I recently purchased a water bottle that although it’s plastic, it’s made to be used again and again. It even comes with a thingy you can freeze and then insert into the bottle if you prefer COLD 🥶 water. (It’s made by “Cool Gear.”)

  1. Hello Nan & Jill. I am starting a new thread as the other one is shrinking too small. There is nothing an individual person can do to really make up for the massive pollution put out by private industries. Yes everything we do is great together but because of the sheer size of industry it is not an equal fight. So don’t be too hard on yourself.

As for Ron, he retired in May of 2020. He was really struggling with the heavy workload of the ICU, he was not feeling well, and the department wanted to increase the workload with no increase in pay of benefits due to Covid patients swamping the hospital. Since he has stopped working his health has improved and he has been able to do a lot of the projects around the house while helping set up his brother in a nursing home and work with the home on his brothers needs.

Ron put a filter on the refrigerator and one on the cold line running to the sink. There is such a difference in the water that is filtered that he is going to redo the waterlines coming in putting filters on both kitchen sink lines. He is looking to a complete house filter system for in the shed on the main waterline in a couple years when he extends the main shed giving him much more room and incorporating the other three sheds into one. When he does that he will have to move the water lines so that would be the time to put in a new filter system. Our park is old, and the water frequently has to be turned off for breaks. A lot of crap has gotten into and built up in the lines over the years. Have a great week.

      1. Hello Nan. The park control / responsibility for the water lines end at the entrance to the home / shed. If we need to move the pipe and meter that are at the back of the house, we would need them to shut off the water and approve the project. Our problem is the prior owner took the water coming in the underneath the back corner of the house and ran the incoming water to the shed, and in a convoluted mess hooking up and washer and dryer, hot water tank, and a water softener then back into the house. We took the water softener and washer / dryer out of there and Ron was in a hurry, so he did not rip it all out and do it correctly, just patch it into the existing working mess. Thing is now there are about a dozen valves and it is not clear which goes where and if they are even connected. For example Ron took me out a few weeks ago to show me a water shut off that was there and when it was turned off made no difference to any tap. He says he has no idea where that line goes to. When we moved in, he found a mess of water pipes just looping back on each other. So one of his projects is to rip out the entire mess and fix it properly. That is when we are thinking of putting in a house filter system.

          1. Hello Nan. No I had not seen this. It is a hit job to distract the base from the stuff coming out about tRump. His long time accounting company dropped him today and released a statement saying his financials cannot be trusted for decades.

Durham is a Barr appointed hack and hitman to try to find ways to back up the tRump statement that the Mueller investigation was politically motivated and not a legal investigation. He has brought ridiculous cases against Clinton lawyers claiming the lied to the FBI by not telling the FBI they once worked for Hillary when they were not currently working for her. So far the lawyer podcasts have laughed at these and shown how they are not properly written and wont stand up in court. In fact I think one has already dismissed.

Here is the truth and this guy skates around it. A few tech guys noticed a server being pinged in trump tower. They traced it back to bank in Moscow that kept irregularly pinging a server registered to the Trump Organization on Fifth Avenue.
Here is an article that describes in detail why they were looking at it and what they found. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/10/was_a_server_registered_to_the_trump_organization_communicating_with_russia.html

As you see this was not in anyway driven by Hillary or her campaign. But when was Fox or a trump appointee ever worried about the truth. Now I will see this spread all over the misinformation right wing media and have to knock it down. Thanks for the link even though it frustrates me.
