  1. Something I’ve wondered about — so the Repukes withdrew from the debates sponsored by some outfit (can’t recall the name of the group). But does that mean they won’t be debating AT ALL? Is this the ONLY group that puts on the debates? I wouldn’t think so, but I don’t know. (And I only watched about one minute of the “good ole’ boy” so I don’t know if he answered this question.)

    1. Hello Nan. Well watching the good ole’ boy wouldn’t have answered your questions as he did not talk about the history of debates. You will like this history.

After a 16 year period in which there were no public presidential debates, the League of Women Voters Education Fund (LWVEF) sponsored three presidential debates in 1976. These debates between Jimmy Carter (D), former governor of Georgia and Gerald Ford (R), President of the United States, were the first to be held since 1960. In 1976 the League also sponsored one vice presidential debate between Senator Walter Mondale (D-MN) and Senator Bob Dole (R-KS).

The League continued to sponsor the presidential and vice presidential debates every four years through the 1984 elections. Following that election cycle, the Democratic and Republican national parties came together in a decision to move sponsorship of the debates under the purview of the parties.

Between 1985 and 1987 the League challenged this move and sparked widespread public debate on the matter. The LWVEF argued that a change in sponsorship that put control of the debate format in the hands of the two dominant parties would deprive voters of one of the only chances they have to see the candidates outside of their controlled campaign environment.

In 1987 the parties announced the creation of the Commission on Presidential Debates. The Commission chose LWVEF to sponsor the last presidential debate of 1988, but placed so many rules and restrictions on the possible format of the debate that the LWVEF was finally unable to agree to participate. In a press release at the time, Nancy Neuman, then LWVUS President, stated that the League had “no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public.”

The nonprofit Commission on Presidential Debates sponsored all the presidential debates since 1988 (1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012).

The issue now is that during the tRump debates the moderator’s fact checked him in real time. He hated that as you might guess. So he browbeat the RNC to make it an issue that they would control the moderators. When the debate commission refused to give the RNC control over who moderated the debates the RNC said they won’t do any the commission sponsors. The real question is will they do any debates. If you listened to Beau he thinks the Democrats should ignore the Republicans and invite the libertarian party candidate to debate. That will draw the right leaning independents from the Republican candidate splitting the right vote and all the left leaning people will still vote Democrat.

        1. Hello Nan. I enjoyed refreshing my memory about this. I knew the general highlights but a lot of the specific events I did not know. But what is interesting to me is that the Republicans do not want to be fact checked nor do they want the moderators to have control over the candidates. Remember tRump refused to do any more debates after the commission decided to put mic cut offs due to the way tRump acted during the first debate with Biden. tRump and the RNC are demanding the right to act as thugs and bullies. Why? Because they think their voter base loves that, loves strong acting people who do not act fairly and won’t let others be treated decently if they disagree with them. And that is the US republican party in a nutshell. It is why the US has the issues we do. A large segment of the population doesn’t want a civilized country. Instead they want a country where they can indulge themselves by acting the hateful way they want to act and do so with complete immunity from consequences. It seems their view is that their right to act like asshole jerks is far more important than anything else. IMO
