“University of California, Berkeley law professor Khiara Bridges reprimanded far-right Sen. Josh Hawley during a congressional hearing on Tuesday, accusing the Missouri Republican of asking transphobic questions.

“You’ve referred to people with a capacity for pregnancy. Would that be women?” Hawley asked Bridges during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on abortion rights titled, “A Post-Roe America: The Legal Consequences of the Dobbs Decision.”

“Many cis women have the capacity for pregnancy. Many cis women do not have the capacity for pregnancy,” Bridges responded. “There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy as well as nonbinary people who are capable of pregnancy.”

Apparently unsatisfied with Bridges’ answer, Hawley fired back: “So this isn’t really a women’s rights issue, it’s a… it’s what?”

Bridges said, “We can recognize that this impacts women while also recognizing that it impacts other groups—those things are not mutually exclusive, Sen. Hawley.””

  1. Call me old-fashioned, but IMO, this is getting a bit extreme … There are also trans men who are capable of pregnancy as well as nonbinary people who are capable of pregnancy.” Good grief!!

    1. Hello Nan. What is the problem? Is it wrong to be inclusive? To not exclude people from using a service, to use a water fountain, going to the same schools? Trans men exist, they are real. They can and do get pregnant. The right wants to gin up a culture war the same as they did with keeping blacks from the front of the bus or from sitting at the lunch counters. It is a recognition of reality that they are fighting against. Notice that it is a hard right Republican well known for being anti-LGBTQ+ that started this line of questioning and went on Hannity that night to crow about owning the libs. He thought he was going to get a great sound bite for the right wing media and instead she handed him his ass for being a jerk. Hugs

      1. Again, you miss my point, Scottie. The fact that we are talking about trans-MEN and “nonbinary” people getting pregnant is, IMO, simply off-the-charts! And my comment has NOTHING to do with the LGBTQ movement … it has to do with the vocabulary that has become part of today’s world. Like I said … Good Grief!!

        1. Hello Nan. The vocabulary has changed with the times. We do not use the same terms we did in the past to refer to black people, ethnic minorities, and gays. Trans men exist in our reality now. Like it or not transmen can get pregnant and not all women can. It is reality that exists, and we understand it as we have progressed as a society. And it has to be included in how our laws are written. You and I know that if the legislation was written “women” there would be medical providers refusing to treat pregnant transmen. As we advanced, we accepted that these people have rights, and we changed our behaviors and language accordingly as a society. We have come to understand these conditions such as sexual orientation and gender are something we are born with. We also recognize today that gender is something different than your body organs. Not all women, which is a gender that has nothing to do with the sex organs, have a uterus. Not all men have penises, some have a uterus. The majority of the country reinforced by medical science realizes that the gender identity of being feminine or masculine don’t have to match the sex organs of the person. But as I said the problem is that some people including Sen. Hawley, who gave the fist bump in the air to the Jan 6 rioters, want to exclude people from being able to access care and treatment to make a political point. He wanted the reaction you had, and that he hopes to spread on Fox news and Hannity, mocking the very existence of the idea men can get pregnant. That is why the law professor told him he was denying the existence of trans people. She had such great come backs, she handed him his butt. I am headed off to bed, have a good night. Hugs
