Hello Jill. Yes it is clear what the republicans want. To create others that can be villainized. They clearly are using this fictitious “human” category to open a way to attack trans people. But for any of us in the modern area have read and watched many shows since the early 1960s original Star Trek that pointed out how wrong such bigotry is. I am stunned that in the year 2023 we still need to fight the bigotry and racism of the past. I ask myself what drives it? I look at the ones shouting most about it and I find it is both religious leaders that cannot leave the past behind and older people who cannot accept the changes in society that have happened as they aged leaving the ideas they still have from their 20s as being unacceptable today. What do both groups have in common? An inability to accept that society has moved forward from the positions they once held as the way the world should be. Heck I just read the Pope is against criminalizing being gay. That will blow the minds of some people. Hope you are well. Hugs

Whereas I can’t quite get my head around the concept of not identifying as human (that’s the pedantic biology side in me), I have no sympathy with North Dakota’s antics; their actions are one short step from the Nazi idea of ‘Untermensch’ and we all know how well that worked out for them by May 1945.
Incidentally the concept was first used by Ku Klux Klan member Lothrop Stoddard in the title of his 1922 book ‘The Revolt Against Civilization’ he used the term ‘under-men’.
Hate and ignorance knows no physical borders.

There was a time when I truly believed humans would learn from the mistakes of past generations, would learn to accept the differences, to respect others, to set aside bigotry in all its forms. But, here it is, 2023 … we’ve been through the Civil Rights Era, and yet Black people are still often treated as second-class citizens. Far too many people don’t understand and won’t try to accept the LGBTQ community. Women’s rights are being taken away and people are applauding it. I have, sadly, concluded that humans are bigots by nature and don’t want to change, that some are actually proud of their narrow-mindedness. I find it deeply depressing and quite honestly, I’ll be happy to leave this world behind. Hugs

Currently listening to an audiobook ‘The End’ by Ian Kershaw about German 1944-45. Moderate republicans should give it a read as a warning where their extremists are leading them. It always ends in tears.

While I have read some of Kershaw’s work, I haven’t read that one, so a quick trip to Amazon to check it out tells me that I want to read it. This excerpt from the brief review of the book reminds me of our own situation with regards to Trump & Co.:
“the structure of Hitler’s “charismatic rule” created a powerful negative bond between him and the Nazi leadership- they had no future without him, and so their fates were inextricably tied. Terror also helped the Third Reich maintain its grip on power as the regime began to wage war not only on its ideologically defined enemies but also on the German people themselves. Oh yes Jill there are many lessons to be learnt but people would rather not.
Regarding those who still vote for Trump and the rest of that shabby pack; let us dwell upon this scene from the classic ‘Downfall’
