WaPo: “Freedom Is Under Assault In DeSantis’ Florida”

Originally I was not sure that if DeathSantis was a true believer, a gang thug, or just a pandering republican.   I have come to the opinion that he really is all three.   While he seemed smart enough to get through an Ivy League school, he was considered really backward and thuggish in the military, which carried over to him being thought of as stupid in the congress.   He really is as ambitious, as religious, as callous, and as entitled thinking a white man who will hurt anyone to advance himself as they come.    The only difference between him and trump is his age and his willingness to listen to others who tell him they can get him what he wants.   Otherwise, he is a trump clone.    Give him authority and power and he will abuse it to enrich himself, create more authority for himself, and to hurt those he can while enjoying doing so.  Terrifying because he took the trump base and entrenched himself as the governor that will do what every they want regardless of how it hurts others or is illegal, if they will continue to support him.    In the article you will see a free link to the story and I suggest you use it.   I have and won’t abuse the privilege to copy it here.     Hugs

From the editorial board of the Washington Post:

Backed by GOP supermajorities in both chambers, Mr. DeSantis is waging frontal assaults on press freedom, reproductive freedom, free enterprise and academic freedom. Meanwhile, in the name of protecting gun rights, he has scaled back prudent safety rules. And now he’s poised to target undocumented immigrants, including “dreamers,” with what will be some of the cruelest policies in America.

One of the cruelest steps Mr. DeSantis plans to take in the coming weeks to bolster his presidential bona fides is a crackdown on undocumented immigrants. He wants to require hospitals to collect data on the immigration status of patients, which would deter people from seeking needed medical care. Another measure under consideration would make it a felony to shelter, hire or transport any undocumented immigrant.

Read the full editorial. It’s really something. Gift link.

He’s a fascist with a fascist supermajority legislature supporting him. Having said that, I don’t see him winning outside of Florida. If Trump drops dead maybe he can get the R nom but even then I’m not sure.

Watch what he does with the Disney thing. As long as he can bully his opponent he can run over them but when he can’t (see: Disney) he becomes a petty, vindictive bitch who resorts to bluster (tolls! taxes!) and just comes off as throwing a tantrum.

The Disney fiasco is going to cost the taxpayers in Floriduh a lot of money. Tourism may suffer too, with groups advising their members not to travel to Florida due to the real danger they could face there.

Definitely. One would hope that would turn some people in Florida off from supporting DeSantis but they do seem to love their fascist government given his margin of victory in his reelection.

I do wonder if his base won’t care too much because the brunt of the punishment is going to be felt in and around Orange County, which is blue.

I think him ignoring the looming insurance disaster while he’s out running for president/on his book tour might get him in more trouble with his base but we’ll see.

Everything they say is true. And it’s playing well to his base, which is part of the plan (securing the GQP nomination for president, the other part being pretending he’s Viktor Orban).

But there’s another side to this coin. He may have enshrined all this fascist ideology into Florida law and got lots of media coverage doing so. But that will come back to haunt him if he runs in the general because he won’t be able to walk it back, to tack to the centre. That will spell his doom.

Am expecting DeSantis to be 2023-2024’s Scott Walker (remember him?).

I hope that’s the case, but I can’t be too sure. American voters can be astoundingly shallow come Election Day, not to mention the potential for the Green Party to ratfuck the Democrats like in 2016.

Though Trump was nominally against abortion in 2016 (typically it was hard to pin down exactly what his position was), few believed Roe v. Wade would be in danger if he was elected. It just wasn’t a big issue.

But it is now and will be even more so in 2024. And DeSantis’s position is crystal clear. Add in other things like his stance on guns, his white supremacy, his weaponizing of government, his picking on the beloved Disney franchise, his targeting of minorities and his blind ambition, none of which play well with the US public, and it’s clear he has an uphill battle ahead of him, even if the shitgibbon is somehow neutralized.

Not saying your skepticism is misplaced. A sharp downturn in the economy, say, or war with Russia or China could radically change the calculus. But if so, most voters would be voting against Biden, not for DeSantis.

That’s what worries me – enough people voting for DeSantis just because he’s “the other guy” or sitting out or voting third-party would be enough to hand the GOP fascists the White House.

They tried this in Alabama about 15 years ago. Guess how many houses didn’t get build and construction companies that folded. They had no one to pick watermelons, oranges, etc. They rotted in the fields. So you do that Ronnie!

Georgia boned at least one vidalia crop with their anti-migrant labor BS, (which was therefore short-lived) …cause local people can’t *live* harvesting one crop a year for subminimum wages, or even minimum wages, thus did not appear. Seasonal labor essentially *has* to move around to get through every year, and average American job-seekers neither have an unofficial system and infrastructure for that, nor do they generally find that appealing.

Not to mention that if someone that’s a citizen is physically-capable of that kind of labor, chances are they will have a *better* job than that at least available. I mean, when I was homeless I made an attempt to get something out of that but between the disability that largely put me there in the first place and the whole not-being-fed part, all I got was sick from being in the Sun and …no pay at all to use to go eat something and try again the next day.

I think what Republicans and racists expect to happen very quickly proves to not be what happens. But they still will neither pay for better arrangements or stop blaming the migrant labor they presume is ‘illegal’ for all their perceived problems.

Why do you think I call him DeFascist? Fucking WaPo! All of you bastards in the both sides media are complicit in bringing this about. How long have you scoffed at those of us who have literally spent decades warning you that this was happening?
That is what happens when you are securely ensconced in your ivory tower. You look out at the world and think that you have sure knowledge of reality when actually you’re just seeing your own biases.

“Felony to shelter, hire or transport undocumented immigrant”. So three quarters of Florida employers will be felons?

Who the fuck does he think is going to tend to the landscaping all of the low rent gated communities? Who is going to harvest the agricultural bounty? Can’t wait for next year’s strawberry crop to rot in the fields.

They think the only way to compete is also to go far right.

It’s stupid. DeSantis constantly increases the size and authority of the Floridian government and its control over Florida’s people, you’d think that “small government” would be an easy rallying cry without having to tread on going far right.

There was a time when the GOP kept their NAZIISM under wraps . No longer . It’s out there front and centre under spot lights

Next up, DeSantis has the FL legislature declare him king for life.

“…would make it a felony to shelter, hire or transport any undocumented immigrant.” Replace “undocumented immigrant” with “Jew” and it’s a page right out of Hitler’s playbook.

    1. Hello Nan. Thank you. I looked and it is there. I have had a rough weekend and today has been terrible pain wise. As I wrote in my reply to Jeff, my body is screaming with muscle pain and my mind is buzzing loudly with hard to ignore signals of distress. I really have been forcing my self to try to do the blog / news. I would feel much better if I tried to watch a movie or even play Halo. I will open it later. Best wishes. Hugs

      1. Sorry you’re feeling bad … again … yet? No rush on the email. (In fact, for some reason, I can’t find it in my files … and I don’t even remember what it was about!)

        1. Hello Nan. Thank you. But let me explain as this is partly my own fault this time and I am a bit proud of it. Yes that sounds strange. Over the weekend Ron got not feeling well again. He has been facing issues and getting really sick, not sleeping at night, feeling very anxious … and he is 68 years old with health issues he doesn’t want to deal with. Ron and I have talked about how it is not good for him to go alone to do large shopping stuff and that we should do even smaller ones together. Then this weekend. It rained hard. First the tarps over the front room were stretched far with sags filled with rain. James was not home and it took both Ron and I together to lift the sags to get the rain to drain but doing so made it also leak into the room badly. So we were up all night doing rain watch fixing what we could in the dark with flashlights, and then in the day we had to build a series of supports for the tarps. But the tarps are sun stressed and now need to be replaced, they have places they leak and water pours in. But James is not able to get time off to help run the tarps, and Ron refuses to let me try to help. So I did ours and James laundry. Then comes the first part of the week, Ron is sick and stressed, and I am facing over doing with my back and legs so I am struggling with bad muscle cramps / spasms, I now am not sleeping due to pain, not able to think, sit, or deal with much online during the day. Fast forward to yesterday and today. Yesterday Ron and I went out and got a few groceries, but then both ended up spending most of the day in bed or resting. This morning we got up and early went to Walmart. Even though Ron tried hard to make it simply not back tracking it seem to take forever. We were gone three hours. My back was failing bad by the time we did the check-out. At home I helped carry in and empty the bags, putting things away. I was in tears by the time we were done, not able to fully lift my feet so I was shuffling. I told Ron I would go out and finish the last couple of stores getting a bunch of minor stuff tomorrow as he has the vapor barrier leveling company coming tomorrow. But he insisted I rest and he wanted to finish the shopping so he went back out alone. Even though we are trying to not have him do that anymore.

The long story short is we are trying to do more of the chores together. And we enjoy doing them together. We originally did all these things together. But when my health failed Ron refused to let me help. Now he is to the point where we are not sure which one of us is in the worst shape, so we are back to doing it all together again.

So that is why I am struggling in pain and to deal with the blog. I want the blog to be a fun informative place for me and those that come here. That means I have to be able to give it my best. The last few days my best has not been so good. 🙂

How have you been? You and your husband must face some of the same issues we do. How close are you to stores, we are really close to the smaller ones and the warehouse stores are about 20 to 30 minutes away. Walmart’s are everywhere here. I guess that is the advantage of near city living. I remember when we lived in New Hampshire / Vermont and it took nearly 45 minutes to get to a place with grocery stores. Often over a mountain during winter when we needed the 4×4 do do the trip. It was huge deal when the first Walmart came to our area.

Anyway, my goal for the rest of the afternoon is to do comments. One of the things I do enjoy most about the blog. I wish WordPress would make it as easy as it used to be, but I still enjoy them. Hugs

          1. Scottie, there’s little I can say that I haven’t said before about your health, so suffice it that I’m sorry you (and Ron) continue to have problems. And what a pain that you have to add HOUSE repairs to your discomfort!!

I’m doing well. Actually, I’ve been “blessed” with good health so other than aches and pains and general tiredness that comes with (old) age, I feel pretty good most of the time. My other-half has some health problems, but they’re pretty much under control via medication. (If we were believers, I would say we’ve been “blessed.” 😈)

Just want to note that I HATE Walmart!!! I shop there ONLY when absolutely necessary … and that’s (at the most!) MAYBE once a year. As far as other stores, since this is a fairly compact town, most are only about 15 minutes away. Costco is just “up the road” … about 5 minutes. The big problem is we don’t have very many general-type stores. LOTS of fast-food joints, though. 🙄

Anyway, I’m going to offer some unsolicited advice once again … STOP PUSHING YOURSELF!! You and Ron both need to come up with some kind of schedule/routine that works for both of you.

I’ll stop now so you can get back to answering other comments. Fingers crossed 🤞 that you feel better soon.

            1. Hello Nan. I am happy for you and your husband. You seem to be settled in comfortably to your point in life. Please never stop leaving comments so I will answer others, your comments deserve my attention as might others, and I dare say much more than others I might answer.

Nan first we hate Walmart, but let me explain why we go there now. Ron and I have had a weird roller coaster life. We have been well off, we have owned businesses, we have had our money stolen, had an entire business stole from us. I lost my health early in our life, Ron who had known Hollywood stars in his 20s went on to work as only the second butler of trumps Mar-a Largo. He was well liked and even went on to work as a butler for one of the most powerful billionaires in the US. But Ron got bored and when the boss wanted him to travel with him even though agreeing to let him take me with him, he worried it would be too much for me and he lost interest in being a butler, so he changed jobs. We went from an income of $91 K a year to less than $40 K It shocked me. But that is Ron, he lacks a real understanding of money and what it meant all his life. He has lived his dreams. Ron would change jobs every few years, learning new skills as he needed. During most of our lives Ron would want to change homes every 4 to 6 years, hard to build equity doing that. Now in retirement with failing heath he is learning a hard life lesson. We have an income the lowest we have ever had in our lives, yet even as we were generous when times were better, we are still that way now when we can be.

Through it all, the good times and the bad, we had one constant. Each other. Our unshaken loving relationship. We adore each other. It drove our families and friends nuts. I really worry what will happen when one of us is not here anymore because we really are so connected to each other. I can take anything in life as long as Ron is here, and he is the same way. Yes we fuss and even snap at each other sometimes, but let one of us stub our toe or have something upset us and the other is right there to help.

As for a schedule. How to set one up. We never get up at the same time, we never seem to do anything on time. Our Endocrinologist is the same person and he is frustrated we sort of float through time as to when we eat or take our medications. We just never have been good at being regulated? Hugs

              1. I’m only going to add this about Walmart … their prices are NOT always the best. At the most, you may save a few cents per item … perhaps $1-$2/visit. I do recognize they have a VAST variety of items, which makes them very convenient. However, some of the stuff is really low quality so you have to be careful. I’m probably not telling you anything new … and if the store works for you, THAT’s what’s important. ❤

                1. Hello Nan. I prefer Publix but Ron is angry that the daughter of the original founder was a Jan 6th funder and she gets her billions from her stock in Publix. So he finds reasons to complain about the stores. He claims they are more expensive than other grocery stores. We also have a Winn-Dixie nearby. What Ron does is price shop and using a warehouse restaurant supply type store, discount stores, the two close stores like Publix and Winn-Dixie, and he has talked joining the local Bj’s / Costco stores. Plus I found ordering our cat food from Amazon saved us a lot of money, the problem is planning the deliveries so you have enough but not far too many or running out. But as I say, Ron does all the price comparisons. When we go to the stores together I follow him around or when he stops to compare stuff I go get what he says we need or just walk around. I cannot stop and stand, and I need to keep moving. Hugs

                2. I understand where Ron is coming from. My other-half has a similar “price-shop” mentality (although he doesn’t like Wal-Mart either). Unfortunately, where we live, our options are extremely limited. The city proper (we live in an unincorporated area) is less than 30,000 and the closest “big” stores are an hour away … so Amazon gets a big portion of our business!

  1. I’m hoping for a vitriolic battle between Trump and DeSantis since both are egotists not given to compromise or dignity and hopefully split MAGA.
DeSantis seems to have some sort of twisted White Privilege agenda which will appeal to racists whereas Trump is all about Trump which appeals to devotee of this their favourite action toy.
As I said here is to vicious infighting in MAGA and Trump going off to form his own party.

    1. I wonder, though, if DeSantis has the “balls” to go up against Trump, primarily because Trump has the “MAGA” crowd behind him. DeSantis is definitely making a name for himself in Florida, but can he carry that influence over to a general election and convince the anti-Trump Republicans that he can do the job?

      1. True DeSantis only has Florida as his fiefdom but he is a national figure and is bound to have support outside of Florida.
As long as they encourage in-fighting which will lead to characters previously united arguing amongst themselves, and in turn encouraging their supporters to fight amongst themselves that will be fine for the rest of the nation.
Also if De Santis should take a traditional route and accept status as running mate with Trump it will devalue his credibility as a rising star of The Right.
Bitter Factionalism and permanent divides are what we must hope for. At this stage the rest is detail.

        1. Hello Roger and Nan. I think DeathSantis star is done unless tRump dies. The more news about trump the stronger he becomes with his base, which is the base that DeathSantis needs to win the primary. tRump has the victim card locked up, and for all their talk of being alpha the right is all about how bad everything / everyone is to them. Remember the white lives matter, these people really think every hurt is about them. They think the entire country, the entire media, the government, the courts, all of it is out to get them. To make them subservient or lower / lesser than. It is weird for a bunch of people that beat their chest about how great they are, to keep claiming constantly that they are the ones losing due to the others who are somehow less than them! Think of tRump. He has everything, he was born to a wealthy family, his father made him a multimillionaire before he went through puberty, he got constantly bailed out, he did everything wrong but kept on being supported by the wealthy / government. Yet he keeps crying about how the entire world is against him and no one has ever been treated as bad as he is being treated. No raped child has ever been attacked like he has been, no slave has been treated as bad as him, no other president has ever faced the harm he has even though some of them have been killed. See the point? Which means to me that the right loves to be the victim, no one has it as bad as they do, even when they are the oppressors trying to harm everyone else.

          What do you think. Hugs

    2. Hello Roger. Yes you are correct. DeathSantis is about the grievances that the right think they have towards everyone else. The fact is that the people on the right hate. They are full of grievances against those people, the ones over there, the ones here, the ones that may think differently, the ones that speak differently. Basically the republican religious right has an entitlement complex and any group that they think may be interfering with their having everything their way is not just against them but evil that needs to be destroyed. There is no tolerance left in these people because in places like Florida they think they are winning, which Roger to them means steamrolling over those who disagree with them.

In the fight between DeathSantis and tRump for the MAGA hateful base, they base will go for the one they think will be the most cruel and hateful to the non-white non-Christian non-subservient to them, and that seems right now to be trump. Why trump, because he is and has been the most openly vocal against black and brown people. DeathSantis uses code words like woke but trump attacks the skin color openly.

Yes if trump doesn’t get the nomination he will burn the Republican Party down in spite. Because in trumps mind he is the most important thing ever. Period. The world revolves around him in his reality. So if the party rejects him, the party is wrong needing to be destroyed in his mind. Hugs

        1. Hello Nan. While I admit I would love the current hateful group that calls themselves republicans to crash and burn … I worry about what might arise out of those ashes? I look that the Marge Greene’s and the Lauren Boebert’s that are fighting to be the lowest of the low, the Tucker Carlson hate preaching Nazi loving most popular host of the right and I wonder what might be the next more hateful people to take power. Hugs
