Florida’s Book Bans Come For “Raunchy” Shakespeare

Oh clutch my pearls, classical literature is not as pure as today’s fundamentalist Christian nationalist who just don’t want their children to get an education but they demand the right to stop your child or anyone from getting one.   This is not about parental control, it is about one minor fundamentalist religious group having complete control over the education of all the children in the entire state.   But only for public schools.  The schools paid for with tax dollars and that educate the lower incomes.  The private schools do not have to follow these stupid bigoted rules.   My dogs that love gravy, this has been a Christian Taliban moral police take over.   Next girls will only be allowed to attend school until the 8th grade and must wear ankle length dresses, and everyone will be in drab colors.  Hugs

Salon reports:

School district officials in Hillsborough County, Fla., have implemented a newly designed curriculum guide for English teachers that will see students reading only selections from William Shakespeare plays.

“There’s some raunchiness in Shakespeare. Because that’s what sold tickets during his time,” said Joseph Cool, a reading teacher at Gaither High School.

“I think the rest of the nation — no, the world, is laughing us,” he added. “Taking Shakespeare in its entirety out because the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is somehow exploiting minors is just absurd.”

Rolling Stone reports:

Schools in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa Bay and the surrounding area, are mostly assigning excerpts by the English language’s most famous writer. The schools previously required students to read two of Shakespeare’s novels or plays, in their entirety, per year.

The decision comes as educators must prepare students for a new set of state exams that cover a wide variety of subject matter, and also, “in consideration of the law,” according to a school district spokesperson, which means teaching it could open educators up to disciplinary measures if a parent were to file a complaint.

The “law” in question is the new Parental Rights in Education Act, which prohibits teaching any content that is sexual in nature.

Start with the Bible. There’s tons of raunchiness in that book

It’s filthy!

It’s worse than filthy it’s fucking disgusting.

Raunchiness, murder, genocide, fratricide, infanticide (lots of this), incest, rape, molestation, racism, drunkenness, prostitution, immolation, cannibalism. It’s all there — so fun!

and donkey dicks and horse ejaculations. Or so I have heard.

Funny how the Bible gets a pass

[Jerusalem] saw this, yet she was more corrupt than [Samaria] in her
lusting and in her prostitutions, which were worse than those of her
sister. She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and commanders,
warriors clothed in full armor, mounted horsemen, all of them handsome
young men. And I saw that she was defiled; they both took the same way.
But she carried her prostitutions further; she saw male figures carved
on the wall, images of the Chaldeans portrayed in vermilion, with belts
around their waists, with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them
looking like officers—a picture of Babylonians whose native land was
Chaldea. When she saw them she lusted after them and sent messengers to
them in Chaldea. And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love,
and they defiled her with their lust, and after she defiled herself with
them, she turned from them in disgust. When she carried on her
prostitutions so openly and flaunted her nakedness, I turned in disgust
from her, as I had turned from her sister. Yet she increased her
prostitutions, remembering the days of her youth, when she prostituted
herself in the land of Egypt and lusted after her paramours there, whose
members were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of
stallions. Thus you longed for the lewdness of your youth, when the
Egyptians fondled your bosom and caressed your young breasts. – Ezekiel
23:11-2

It needs a good editor!

Perhaps starting with

In the beginning Once upon a time God created the heavens and the earth.”

All Shakespeare’s female characters were performed by men in drag.

I’m just sayin’…..

Will MTG be banned from Florida schools? You never know when Large Marge might suddenly display photos of Hunter Biden’s penis.

“I think the rest of the nation — no, the world, is laughing us,”

Ya think? If it makes you feel any better, they probably didn’t start with this one.

Florida’s new education motto:

No colleges outside of Florida will likely accept these kids who are getting fucked over

They are first in line at Liberty University doctoral programs.

They’ll get into faith based colleges

Good luck getting a job though

About that…

Because Matt Gaetz’s girlfriends keep aging out of the job?

I think Texas might actually be a little bit worse about those child beauty pageants; Little Miss Texarkana, etc.

Teachers remove books out of fear

It is happening in Sarasota County too: “Teachers offloading books in DeSantis’ Florida, resellers say,” Aug. 4.

I work in a Sarasota County thrift store. This summer, the store has received thousands of books from schools and classroom libraries. They are marked with the names of teachers or schools.

It is clear from the wide variety of titles that teachers work hard to help every student feel validated and included in a diverse classroom.

I literally cried in the store when I saw the titles: Newbery Award and Honor Books, the highest award a children’s book can receive from the American Library Association, no longer available to children in their schools. Most of the books depict characters from minority and vulnerable populations.

Reading novels with characters that face struggles the reader does not experience develops empathy for others. Perhaps our governor could read a few and develop a little empathy himself.

I feel sorry for all the youngsters in Florida who are being deprived of everything except a selective education which intentionally leaves gigantic holes in their curriculum.

Those who go off to college (esp. out of state) are going to find out they’re years behind their classmates.

Only the public schools. The elite private schools are not bound by the state curriculum and will be able to teach real history, literature, art, etc. Rhonda’s children go to private school.

The ones who are exceptionally smart will find a way to get educated. I’m concerned about the others. Not every child is going to be able to do what Tara Westover did.

  1. OK; now I’m being really judgmental. The Bible gets a pass because they don’t read the damn thing; they only worship it. The tests are on cherry-picked bits, and because of all the rules they’re setting for public education, it’s likely people won’t be able to read their own Bibles, once again, and will have to rely on their authorities to tell them what it says. It’s what they do anyway, obviously, but at least with the ability to read and comprehend language, they could explore and find things. Like the full laws, the Song of Solomon, and even, horror or horrors, the Sermon on the Mount.
I read a bit yesterday, in a couple of places, that ministers are getting poor response when they read and preach Gospel, especially that Sermon. People ask where the liberal talking points came from. When told they’re in Matthew and Jesus spoke them, the congregants respond, to the freakin’ minister, that those things don’t count anymore because they don’t work. The ministers are concerned.
    Grrrrrrrr.

    1. Hello Ali. The fundamentalist are taking over. These people are fueled by negative emotions. The anger and rage gives them a high and they need to be constantly stoked up to get ever more charged feelings. That is why Fox hosts act the way they do, they are giving their audience the emotional high fix they crave. But again people need to ask what is the fuel, the money, that is pushing hard to change people’s ideas this way. To make people less charitable, less willing to use the government to help others, to fix wrongs, pushing a libertarian view that everyone for themselves. There are large amounts of dark money being used around the world to defeat democracy and push authoritarian Nazi type governments. Hugs

    1. Hey Roger. I think the fundamentalist feel if they can remove any material other than their own propaganda / indoctrination, no one will ever question their authority or change their world view. Every child will grow up die hard Christians and get married young, one man / one woman marriages then have lots of children they will take to church all the time, butts in pews, money in the donation plate, good worker bee followers who never question their betters. Most important, these mental slaves will always vote republican.

This is the overwhelming goal / desire of the fundamentalist Christian nationalist conservative movement, using Florida as ground zero under the dictatorship of true believer DeathSantis. Hugs

      1. It won’t work Scottie.
Not in a nation where there has been a society based on the individual. Not one over five time zones. Not one with a multiplicity of cultures and races who have thrown off the indoctrination of White Superiority. Too many factors they would have to try to wipe out, and they won’t. It never succeeds unless the governance convinces The Whole Population by Inclusion.
The biggest gallows joke of all being that these folk who want to reduce gun control to next to nothing want to try and impose their will on folk at the same time.
A population with many aggrieved sections with easy access to guns, in an era where anyone with an intent can make an I.E.D?
They really have not got a clue about the forces which they are trying to control.
It’s like a frat party in a forest in high summer during a drought.
And I would like to be proven wrong. But we’ve seen it at close hand in Northern Ireland. And that is not over by any means.

          1. It’s a grim scenario, won’t be the first time it’s happened to a nation either. (The 17th Century Wars in these Isles were one sort of parallel)
I’m hoping Nan, if a couple of years time we can all give big sighs of relies and say either
            ‘Phew! That’s over’
            or
            ‘Wow! We did it!’
Or in my case in the UK
‘Whatever was I thinking about? They did pull through after all,’

            1. May I ask about the Taliban. A small violent religious minority ruling over an entire country with fear and intimidation to enforce their strict fundamentalist religious views on the entire country? That is the model that it seems the fundamentalist Christian Nationalist want to use in the US.

I just listened to a broadcast where the wife of a Republican in office, both fundamentalist Christians, she goes to the small take a book leave / leave a book stands and takes all the books and fills them with bibles. I did not realize it but there is a national non-profit that raises money and promotes these small little 10 book stands, they show people how to build them and erect them legally, they even pay for a selection of books. The goal is to get books to people too poor or kids who might not have access to books. Yet this woman admitted she does this because the books in the don’t have her Christian values and horror of horrors she has been finding books with LGBTQ+ characters or pride themes lately. My dogs that love gravy she can not tolerate that, someone may read something she doesn’t like or agree with. So she removes the books and replaces them with her approved book, the bible. If she read the bible, she would understand the depravity in it, things if it was written in any other book she would remove and destroy. Hugs

              1. It seems the “Christians” in some areas are getting bolder and bolder. And from all indications, NOBODY is doing anything about it so they continue to run slipshod over any and all things that aren’t “Christian-blessed.”

                1. Hello Nan. I am doing what I can. I understand what you mean though, no one in power or authority seems to be pushing back. I think the problem is the current makeup of the SCOTUS which has openly announced they are going to push the Christian nationalist ideology. That has a complete chilling effect on challenging these people and the new rules / laws. Hugs

              2. And these are people who think they are worthy of living in a democracy.
You would almost belief Scottie that the Taliban fundamentalism is a disease which was somehow brought back to the USA, maybe on weapons or military hardware it contaminated.
From a Christian perspective it is a hope that Christians can ‘spread the word’ .
However this is supposed to be done by open preaching and also by convincing not by intimidation and browbeating.
These fundamentalist will not wins hearts and minds they will spread fear and loathing too.

                1. Hello Roger. I agree with you. But these Christians do not want to win hearts and minds nor even spread the word. They feel they tried that and lost, lost entire generations. So now they are going full out on force and intimidation. I am not kidding Roger, in the US you have Christians supporting gun carrying gang thugs called Proud Boys and others violently forcing the interruption and stopping of drag queen story hours when people in costume read to kids who were brought there by their parents who are in attendance. This is not about protecting kids, this is about scaring everyone involved so no one dares do this again.

They simply are continuing what they started with legal abortion clinics. They used fear, intimidation, legal laws based on ideology with made up pretend science, and anything they could do including murdering abortion doctors to get their way. If they are not stopped they will do that now to push their anti-LGBTQ+ ideology. Hugs

                  1. This era is reminiscent of the second era of the KKK back in the 1920s which was accompanied by a fundamentalist surge.
And subsequent but smaller similar increases in the rise in populist movements.
A mobilisation of the moderate population and those who think this is nothing to do with them is necessary .
For the simple reason these extremists do not have moral brake. Those who think this has nothing to do with them, will find out extremists will be inclined to ensure entry into their lives too.
