This Youth Detention Center Superintendent Illegally Locks Kids Alone in Cells. No One Has Forced Him to Stop.
The Richard L. Bean Juvenile Service Center has been punishing kids with seclusion more than any other facility in Tennessee. And as the laws and rules on how to treat kids changed, the facility failed to keep up.

  1. Hi Scottie;
    People need to stop for a minute and realize the devastating consequence of isolation on a child before they pound their chest and revel in the fact that “if you can’t do the time…” bullshit.
    These are kids; screwed up by their environment, attitude, education, responses to their problems – they are kids. I worked in the county juvenile facility for a bit, and to see these “horrible punks” sit glued to someone reading them a story blew my mind. They craved attention, a soft word of encouragement, a safe moment where they weren’t being judged or put at risk. Yep, they could be violent, scary, thieving and destructive, and they were also very sad, frightened, lonely, and resigned to a life they didn’t want but couldn’t escape.
    I am saddened that these people view locking a kid in such an environment as anything but the very. last. resort.
    Dammit, I’m getting madder and madder as I type and I just burned my chicken. No, that wasn’t a euphemism!

    1. Hello Randy. You are such a decent person, I can see why you would be angry at this mistreatment of young people, who just want attention and a kind word. You wrote they were also very sad, frightened, lonely, and resigned to a life they didn’t want but couldn’t escape. That was me! You know my history more than most, think how desperate I was for a kind word and a bit of attention. It drove me right into the arms of the SDA church. Think what would have happened to me in today’s internet age. If I had fallen in with the wrong people instead of those wanting to help, with my prior abuse, what would I have been willing to do for those kind words and nice safe soft touch? Even now looking back, I realize there was a teacher at the school that was trying to figure out if I would let them have me, and I would have, figuring it was the price of admission or a good grade. I realize what kept me safe was my benefactor, who was very wealthy and made it clear people were to leave me alone and give me space to grow. After all, he saw me after a beating. So while it came close a few times at the boarding school, I was safe there. We need people like you working to help the most disadvantaged, because you care. Hugs and love. Scottie
