Florida Bans The Dictionary

To avoid running afoul of state laws, a Florida school district has removed dictionaries that reference words like “sex.”

    1. I read that the Bible has also been removed from school library shelves, along with encyclopedia.

When I was in 4th grade, our teacher used to draw bikini tops on women who were topless in the Nat’l Geographics magazines. I believe the toplessness was both a cultural and an efficiency effort for those women, if I recall correctly. But, our friends the 9-10 yo boys got wound up if the teacher didn’t do that. I remembered that with this banning, because I wonder why they don’t just tear or mark out the offending portions of the dictionaries and encyclopedia, rather that depriving everyone of all the information.

I guess these people aren’t very good at thinking. Almost as if they’re not experienced with books.

      1. ‘Christians’ removing Bibles.
That just about sums up the mindset doesn’t it?
And the same mindset would have entire book removed because of a a few controversial passages, because as far as those folk are concerned there could be hidden messages elsewhere.
Once the neurosis starts it spreads like a wildfire.

      2. I don’t keep up with this stuff, but from what little I’ve read, I’m surprised that bibles would be removed since the ones who are fussing about the “contents” of some books are generally bible-thumpers. But then, I suppose if one REALLY looks at the bible, there is gasp sex acts in it too!!

        1. Yep, and that’s what did it. Bibles were included because of that. Whoever did the reviews did them to the letter of the law.😏

        2. There will be people within the admin of various states who will be in opposition to the current right wing hysteria, and they chose to use ‘The Letter of The Law’ to make these fundamentalist folk look all kinds of stupid.
In the UK trade unions involved in industrial action would invoke a tactic of ‘Working To Rule’ and thus slow down work processes to a crawl. A similar tactic.

  1. Hi All. About the bible being removed. In all places the bible was removed, it was returned to the shelves / libraries with in a week. Some places said it would be too controversial to remove it, even though that was the point of the law to remove controversial books. In some places they claimed that because it was a religious text it was somehow exempt but admitted that no other holy scripture / religious texts would be so exempted. Also in Midwest red states they are simply writing in the law that the laws don’t apply to the bible and no one can ban bibles. One state simply wrote a law saying no authority can ban or prohibit the bible in schools / classrooms, libraries, or really any public space.

As was mentioned by others, the point of these bans is to enforce a biblical morality, as the fundamentalist churches now claim it is. A forced return to the society of the 1950s. These people only want to get rid of any representation or positive reflection of LGBTQIA people. Notice that the don’t say gay bills allow for anti-gay and anti-trans bigotry and negative portrayal, just nothing supportive. These people want to force the bible into public schools. It is a religious take over. They never thought that their laws against others books would be used against their own books, but when it was they simple ignored it.

And lastly that is what these people really are. The law only matters to them when they can use it against others. They don’t believe it applies to them. They make these rules so they can enforce them on others, they are the rulers. They sneakily worked to get themselves on these boards so they could change the way / what the majority wants and let them rule as a minority. Hugs. Scottie

    1. See, and I figured they banned/removed Bibles so no one could read one and find out how wrong they are when they claim they are Biblical. They don’t think too far ahead, now, do they… (“they” being rightwing book banners.)

    2. I want to say it was Missouri who wrote their laws so that the Bible could not be banned, because someone got up in a meeting and read Song of Solomon or something, to show that the Bible is far less “safe” for “pure” young minds. I haven’t looked it up because the whole thing is depressing at this stage of life. I just remember what wonderful places both the public library and the school library were when I was young, and how my grandparents always encouraged me to read anything I chose, even if they didn’t like it themselves. sigh

    3. Yes they will warp and shift things to suit their hideous purposes. Never mind the blatant hypocrisy. They have their brothers-in-tolerance in Iran and Afghanistan (Oh the irony). They remind me of Humpty Dumpty in ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’:
“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean – neither more nor less.”
“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master – that’s all.”
We can only hope, they too have a Great Fall

      1. Hi Roger. Yes and it seems to be coming fast now. You mentioned  their brothers-in-tolerance in Iran and Afghanistan. Which I agree is very true but they will the very first to tell you how bad, evil, wrong those groups are. Why, well they follow the wrong god ofcourse. When we do it we are correct because we are following the correct god, when they do it they are wrong because they follow the wrong god.

Seriously look how often these fundmentlist Christians make the same claims about women, gays, trans people, forced religious indoctrination. When those guys make women cover up to be modest, they are evil men. Yet those same fundmentlists demand women cover up and be modest. When the Muslims insist on killing those who don’t worship correctly they are evil bad people, yet the same fundmentlists also want to punish those who don’t worship their god and do so properly. When other religions want religious schools / forced religous classes, they are abusing educations, yet the same Christians are demanding that their bible be read, verses displayed, and forced public prayer in public schools. Basicly making public schools church schools for the Christian faith. Hugs. Scottie

        1. Agreed Scottie.
Intolerance always comes with its own built in Hypocrisy which the supporters will justify because they are ‘Correct’ and the rest are ‘Wrong’.
Since they cannot be reasoned with, it is essential that those are ‘not with them’ must take a stance of being ‘against them’. Voluntarily not voting in the Presidential Election this year is not an option, under any circumstances.
