“80% of Transgender Kids Detransition” DEBUNKED

Do 80% of transgender kids grow out of gender dysphoria? Do 80-90% of trans people desist? Here, we look at the Desistance Myth using an informed understanding of Gender Dysphoria and its diagnostic criteria in the DSM 5, the defunct diagnosis of Gender Identity Disorder from the DSM 4, and recent research from reputable medical institutions. And yes, we analyze the famous Thomas Steensma study (2013) and detransition rates overall.

  1. Of course 80% don’t. If “regrets” were that high, transitioning would involve even longer waits and more intensive psych treatment than is already required (and has been for decades.) Thinking people are aware of that already, but it’s good to have yet more knowledge backing it up.

    1. Hello Ali. Of course. But the haters / anti-trans desperately need to say anything to slander the trans people. Heck look how hard the right wing is holding on to anti-covid shit long proven wrong.

Ali, I heard about it, but I just googled the new study on trans satisfaction after transitioning. Wow it is eye-opening, it is like asking gay people how they felt after finally coming out and being accepted. 94 percent are happy with transitioning. That is why these right wing groups are desperately trying to push disinformation before the new study gets widely known. One report on it, you might like is here. https://www.thepinknews.com/2024/02/08/trans-people-us-survey-transition/ Hugs. Scottie

  2. A certain “trans ideology” theorist who we have both crossed swords with in the past has previously attempted to convince me of the “truth” that 80% of trans children desist. I found almost exactly the same evidence as is presented in the video to debunk the myth. Not that it made any difference to you know who.

For goodness sake, as a child, I would have met the criteria for Gender Identity Disorder as defined in the DSM-IV, as I met requirements 2, 3, 4 and 5. However I would not have met the criteria for Gender Dysphoria as defined in the DSM-V. It’s a nonsense to say the children who meet outdated criteria for an outdated disorder (GID) have desisted when they do not meet the criteria for a different condition (GD)..

    1. Hello Barry. You know who is not an honest actor in this, he has been caught flat out lying like in this instance to promote the idea that trans is bad and should be illegal. He pushes debunked theories because that is all he has. When shown he is wrong, he refuses to adjust his thinking, but just keeps repeating the lies. That is why he was very close to being banned here on my Play Time. If I show you that you are wrong on something with proof and facts, and you just keep repeating a lie I won’t have it. He knows this, he knows I won’t permit it, and he stays away. I like that.

Everything you wrote is true Barry. The reason they change the manuals and text books is that medical people and scientist keep learning more, and our understanding grows. A long time ago being gay was classified a mental disorder. First published in 1968, DSM-II listed homosexuality as a mental disorder. In 1973, members of the American Psychiatric Association voted to remove homosexuality from the DSM. But even though the thought / mind doctors voted to remove it, it was not until 1987 did homosexuality completely fall out of the DSM.

But Barry just like the person we were talking about some people seem to cling to the idea that being gay is a mental disorder refusing to change their opinion based on new evidence. Plus I remembered something. Not all gender-nonconforming people have dysphoria, they just know they are not the gender they were assigned.

Here is something I just learned that I would like your opinion on when you have time if you would. Should gender disorder be removed from the DSM-5 or not?

Some researchers and transgender people argue for the declassification of the condition because they say the diagnosis pathologizes gender variance and reinforces the binary model of gender.[15] However, this declassification could carry implications for healthcare accessibility, as HRT and gender-affirming surgery could be deemed cosmetic by insurance providers, as opposed to medically necessary treatment, thereby affecting coverage.[16]

Not only can you use the information in the link I shared with Ali, here is one from MSNBC which might be more convincing to some. Best Wishes. Scottie

      1. As an aside, you know who has been under permanent moderation on my blog since 2018 partially for pushing debunked theories, but principally for inflammatory language, denigrating those who disagree with him, and for hijacking discussion threads for his own agenda. And in my 10 years on WordPress, he is the only person I’ve felt the need to moderate.

Should gender disorder be removed from the DSM-5 or not?
Although I self-identify as agender and asexual, I haven’t become involved in the LGBTQIA+ community. Perhaps the “a” in agender and asexual says it all – I don’t feel strongly enough to become involved. Therefore I’m reluctant to answer the question directly apart from saying that I would support the trans community preference. However I suspect that many of the arguments the autistic community have for the declassification of autism as a disorder would have parallels for the declassification of gender dysphoria.

Pathologising normal variations in human beings stigmatises diversity outside a narrow normative window marking them as broken or in need of a cure instead of leading to acceptance and inclusion. I think that applies as equally to gender diversity as it does to neurodiversity.

One observation I will make is that in Western society, one’s biological sex and gender identity/expression are more closely tied than they are in many other societies. For example most Polynesian societies recognised three or more genders – one had as many as seven. The West stereotypes sex and gender – those of a particular biological sex are expected to conform to a particular gender expression, and visa versa – those with a particular gender expression are expected to have particular biological sex characteristics. I wonder if some cases of dysphoria are caused by this conflation of sex and gender, and if society did not demand such a close connection between them then perhaps there would be fewer people with gender dysphoria – they’d be comfortable expressing their preferred gender without feeling the need to physically transition? And of course the West’s expectation that both sex and gender can only be binary makes the situation so much worse

Here in Aotearoa we have three officially recognised genders – male, female, and non-binary and anyone (including children although with some oversight) can self identify as any gender by making a declaration that they wish to be that gender (and pay a small fee to cover the cost of changing documents such as their birth certificate).

Most transgender people here do not undergo gender reassignment surgery, but I don’t know whether that’s because they don’t generally suffer gender dysphoria or whether it’s the difficulty of getting it done in NZ due to a lack of public health funding. Most who do undergo surgery travel to Asia for the procedure, but it is very expensive.

As far as issues such as health insurance, it’s not relevant to NZ. We have a socialised medical model, not the private health model of America. And perhaps the influence of Māori and Polynesian culture see us treating the whole person rather than treating symptoms in isolation, so seeing a condition in strictly medical terms is less important than I suspect the case is in America. Clearly if someone is distressed by their primary or secondary sexual characteristics, then that distress needs to be remedied. Whether that’s by surgery, hormones, or other forms of therapy will depend on the individual and their needs.

        1. Wow, Barry, again you have opened my eyes to things I had no clue of. First if you would let me, I would like to address the Idea of autism being a disorder. I totally agree with you that it should be removed from the DSM-5. See until you started commenting I never really thought of the issue of autistic people. You opened my mind to a lot of things I did not realize I had simply overlooked and did not understand.

Barry the way I see it, unless being gay caused someone such distress that they couldn’t function in society, and that goes for all the LGBTQIA, then it never should be listed as a disorder. I feel the same now about autism. Forgive the next sentence please. I used to call people with autism as people with autism until you opened my eyes to how wrong that is. I now say autistic people. That is the difference having an autistic person talk to you, and you listen. You have taught me a lot.

So to be clear, I think that if an autistic person is not suffering from other issues it shouldn’t be listed as a disorder. Maybe the issue an autistic person is having is due to how society is treating them?

Again you have taught me something I did not know. I never knew of the Polynesian societies views and I love them. They are very similar to the Native / First People here in the US. Yes the US is very messed up about sex, gender, and relationships because we are still trying to deal with the Puritan issues and the now resurging fundamentalist Christians that seem to feel the way the Puritans did, that anything but male sexual pleasure is horribly wrong, and the male pleasure must be inside a female if she is willing or not. It is disgusting!

Barry thank you for taking the time to answer me or comment. It has been enlightening for me. I just wish the rest of the US could be exposed to new and different idea and learn from them. Sadly far too many in the US when exposed to new ideas just reject them without thought, claiming it is against Jesus, against tradition, or from some group they have been trained to hate like the liberals. Even though they have no idea who the liberals are. Best wishes. Scottie.
