As many of my readers will know I have been trying to move from my long time browser to something less invasive. I tried Firefox and took an entire day to move everything to there. That took forever. But I did not like the way it worked with the websites I like to visit.
While several wonderful readers told me of their browsers either used them or my security settings wouldn’t let them download. Lucky for me Barry, a frequent reader and commenter read of my struggles and suggest one I have not heard of before. I am trying it and so far like it. The issue will be the history. Will it save my open tabs so I can reopen them if the window closes. I did see and turned on auto sessions saving which is supposed to save and allow to be reopened another time. I hope it works. Hugs. Scottie
I don’t have as many tabs open at one time as you do – typically no more than 20 – 30, but when I restart Vivaldi, all tabs that were open when I shut Vivaldi down reopen. Always. And that applies no matter which of my two desktops, two laptops or phone that I start Vivaldi on as they are all synchronised.
When I have a number of tabs on a related topic open, and wish to follow up on them at a later date, then I will save them as a named session (ctrl + Shift + Left click on selected tabs, then right click on one of the selected tabs and click on Save Selected Tabs as Session) so I can call them up when required. This helps cut down on the number of tabs I need to keep open at one time. For example if I go to File > Open Saved Session… I can see I currently have saved 11 sessions with names such as “Stigma in autism” (15 tabs), “Gender ID in NZ” (6 tabs), “Case for remembering Parihaka” (17 tabs), “Alexithymia, Aphantasia & Prosopagnosia” (23 tabs), “Experiencing the divine” (7 tabs) and six other sessions.
Vivaldi has added a new feature they call Workspaces which allows you to group tabs together. If you select a specific workspace you see only the tabs related to that workspace. The other tabs remain open but are hidden from view until you unselect the workspace or open an alternative workspace. I haven’t tried it out yet, but I can see me using it as an alternative to opening a new Vivaldi window when I want to work on a saved session without my currently open tabs getting in the way.
If there is a criticism of Vivaldi , it is that it is insanely customisable without the need for plugins or extensions. Even after using it a my go-to browser for 5 years, I can still find built in tweaks that make the browser more in tune with the way I like to work.

Hi Barry. I should have updated the post. I found the sessions settings. I set my auto save for 1 day. Then closed tabs and hoped for the best. When I open the browser I hit the button and they all came back up. I love it. Yes I have warned others in comments about that, but once you learn what they call things and how to navigate it again it is a feature I like. I have not tried workspace, but don’t need to, the browser is doing everything I want it to really well. Better than others I have tried. Thank you for mentioning it. Best wishes. Scottie
