Most Americans are wrong about crime

In 2020 and 2021, amid a pandemic that wreaked general havoc on the social fabric of the United States, violent crime rose. Today, most Americans believe that crime in the US has come roaring back — maybe even to the levels of the 1980s and ’90s.

But a look at the data shows a very different story. Nevertheless, the feeling that our cities are less safe is at least partly coming from something real. Something has changed in American cities, particularly since the pandemic. So what’s different, and what is the truth about crime in America right now?

    1. Hi Suze. The problem is the upper incomes have managed to change the economy so much that normal people don’t have time to learn the truth about much, much less time to have a quality life. After all the upper incomes don’t want the lower incomes thinking, just taking orders and doing what they are told. So most people either just see the headlines, the misleading stories on social media or the horrible deliberate misinformation by Fox. People are scrambling just to survive and thrive, and the Republican Party take advantage of that. They openly lie and then demand you apologize if you show how they lied. Hugs. Scottie

  1. We in the UK have a similarity. The national stats from the police authorities indicate that crime is going down. However at the same time knife crime between teenagers and young adults is an acknowledged severe problem. There are also areas in the UK where high crime for one reason or another, usual drug gangs and high unemployment has made life difficult for the majority of people resident in those areas.
The problem will always be The Perception because the public will focus on headlines and local high profile incidents, and distrust statistics.
Fear of Crime being the issue. It will figure in the forthcoming UK election.
    A difficult one.
Particularly when some political groupings will raise that fear and encourage their own to ‘stand their ground’ (which will not be crime, of course).
    Good post Scottie.
    Keep up the good work.

    1. Hi Roger. Yes fear sells, and the right in the US uses it constantly as it is all they have. They have no policies that are popular, all the things they do are very unpopular. As for crime as you said these groups only claim it to use against the groups they dislike, the ones they want to hurt, harm, and demonize. Those people cause crime, those people bring disease. The lower income have no time in their lives as they scramble to survive and thrive to have a small measure of quality time, something the upper income doesn’t want them to have. The upper incomes do not want an informed public, they want low information scared desperate workers willing to take any job at any low wage in any bad conditions. That is their goal in the US. Hugs. 1. I fear you are right Scottie.
They will deny this, some even unto themselves and dress it up in justifications.
Yet, deep down, in those personal places they pretend they do not have….
        This is so.

        Take care you guys
