As a former IDF soldier and historian of genocide, I was deeply disturbed by my recent visit to Israel
The long read: This summer, one of my lectures was protested by far-right students. Their rhetoric brought to mind some of the darkest moments of 20th-century history – and overlapped with mainstream Israeli views to a shocking degree

    1. Hi Barry. I agree. It is criminal what Israel is doing. I heard to day they are using Palestinians children and civilians as human shields for their soldiers and vehicles. That Biden supports Israel and says he is a Zionist and will protect Israel no matter what. So if Israel managed to pick a fight with Iran and they go to war, Biden will order US troops to defend Israel as are ships are now. It makes the US complicate in what Israel is doing. Best wishes. 1. Hi Roger. As I wrote to Barry above I just heard Israel IDF is using Palestinian children and civilians as human shields for soldiers and vehicles. I hate that Biden is locked into a mindset of 40 years ago and insists on protecting Israel no matter how much Israel is the aggressor and breaks international laws. Biden ignores that Israel attacks other sovereign nations and stops any nations from responding back. I hate it, it makes the US complicate in Israels actions. Hugs. Scottie

      1. I hope Scottie that what is happening in Gaza and the West Bank will raise people’s awareness to this type of horror is happening and has been happening with increasing frequency across the world. As shown in this Guardian article from December 2023.

        The danger is twofold:
        1. Some activists for their own political reasoning will be in a mindset of ‘This Atrocity is more important that that atrocity’ and insist we pay attention to their cause. Even to the extent of trying to justify another nation’s violent actions.
        2. There will be the opposite reaction which is a collective shrug by folk who do not want to be bothered and in effect saying ‘Well one lot is as bad as the other. What can I do?’
        3. Governments can try to cover up their own abuses or shortcomings in failing to deal with communal violence by trying to turn the attention on another country.

For many of us, it would be comparative to a group of folk trying to deal with fires springing up and not knowing which one to deal with first.

The essential task is a basic two-fold one.
        1. Send whatever financial aid you can manage to one area, for there are many charities trying their best to work with refugees, or risk their own lives in an area.
        2. Support on the public media that brave folk who are protesting against their own governments, or the government of the land of their birth. (It is very sobering that even those who reside in say the USA who take a stand against the government of their own nation of origin risk abuse or even physical harm by said government’s agents and supporters.

        Take care Scottie.
