Up date on our home and hurricane Milton.

Just an update on our situation.  It is like a ghost town here.  Few of us stayed.  Most left and went to hotels or friends homes even closer to the water, which is silly.  The fact is they did not want to be alone.    The storm shifted south, meaning it is closer to us so we are going to get more than we thought, plus it has become a cat 4 at landfall.   It is slowed a bit now expected to hit around 1 or 2 in the morning.  Good thing is we will be sleeping, the bad thing is we will lose power.  I will offer Ron one of my back up power supplies from the computers to keep his C-PAP running all night.  He will be too upset to sleep but I will try to help him.  He has fortified the home as much as possible even boarding up windows we did not board up for Ian.  The good news is unlike Ian which hung over us for 8 hours this storm will pass quickly over us and be gone.  The biggest danger to us and why we took so much damage from Ian was the roofs of other homes smashing into our home and slicing open our own roof, letting it peel open.  Plus the sides of the house was hit by flying debris that people left out when they left.  People don’t realize that stuff becomes missiles to hit other homes or people.   The animals are all hunkered down outside.  Last night the animals like rabbits, possums, armadillos, raccoons, and other small critters all foraged like crazy knowing they wouldn’t eat for a few days.  Now there are no animals out at all.  Our security cameras show nothing moving out there.   We should be OK if the house holds.  If not, well it was nice being friends with you all.  Hugs.  Scottie

    1. Hi Roger. Thank you both for your concern. We are safe and well. The storm tightened and shrank in on itself and the most damage was on the north side while we were south of it. So the high winds we got were after it passed and only gusts of cat 1 strength. Hugs. Scottie

    1. Hi Janet. Thank you. We appreciate it. We are well, the storm did most of the damage to the north side of it, and we are south of the storm. Our high winds are now the back side. The storm moved fast so it hit and was headed away from us pretty quickly. In the morning it will be debris pick up and inspect the house, take the boards off the windows and patch the holes. Hugs. Scottie

    1. Hi Shelldigger. Thank you friend. We actually came through the storm really well. The storm shrank in on itself some, came down to a cat 3 and the damage was done on the north side. We really only got the back winds after it passed not the headwinds as it came ashore. We did have a lot of rain the last three days but we did not get any storm surge from the nearby river. In the morning we will have to inspect the house, take down all the boards from the windows, and clean up debris. I will let everyone know how the house looks in the morning. Hugs. Scottie

  1. I’d feel better if you were elsewhere, too. Also if you guys wear lifejackets/flotation devices to bed. When the animals bail, well. Anyway, I’m sending you an email. It is very good being friends with and interacting with you, and here’s to a fine future continuing to do so!

    1. Hi Ali. Thank you. Knowing you has been very good for me as well. Please be reassured that we are OK, safe, and dry. The storm shrank in on itself as it came ashore, it picked up speed, and so was moving fast. We got the back side winds only but we did not get the damaging head of storm winds that normally happen when they are this close. We had a dozen power hits where power went out but came back on. The power seems stable now. So all is good. Even the wind has died down. We will have sun and rain in the morning off and on. We will have a lot of work in the morning but it is better than it could have been. Hugs. Scottie

      1. OK. Well, it looked, on TV weather, as if that was what was happening, but I still could only hope. I did keep pushing positivity into the universe about it. Here’s to all being relatively well as I type this at 9:40 AM CDT, 10:40 AM your time.

      1. Hi Nan. Yes we had a record number of tornados in our area. James contacted us. That roof you seen must have been close to him as he was telling us about a tornado going right up 41 a local main road here and that they got some damage from it. He was worried about us. He is blossoming as a family man and we are proud of him. Yet he still checks in with us to make sure we are OK and before the storm offered to come over and help Ron if Ron needed him.

We suspect from what we heard that it was a mini tornado that did so much damage to our little area of the park and our home during Ian. The last hurricane Helene a few weeks ago a neighbor lost her roof because the person who put it on skimped on screws to save money. The guy then skipped town after getting down payments from people after Ian. Far too many people depend on simple pan roofs which are OK but not suited to higher storms.

I hope you are doing well and feeling OK. Be well. Hugs. Scottie

    1. Hi Nan. Thank you. Oh how we would love to move to a blue state that respects the rights of the people. Sadly that ship sailed over a decade ago. We did try to move several times but that got ruined with Ian making a mess of the house we are still rebuilding from. So unless we win the lottery which is the US retirement plan, we are stuck here.

We came through the storm very well. At this point it is still dark and we can’t see outside other than our security cameras, so we don’t know the damage yet. But we did not get the high headwinds, because the storm shrank in on itself and it also did most of the damage on the north side of the storm and we were to the south of it. We also did not get the storm surge from the nearby river either. We did take a hit to the attached shed back wall, but the wall held. Right now the storm is so far away I no longer hear any wind at all. So I think we came through OK. Hugs. Scottie

    1. Hello Brother. I was sorry to interrupt your sleep with the news we were OK, I thought you would get it in the morning. I hate waking you. People that don’t understand that you work 60 hours a week and sometimes more. I know I woke you so many times then. It was so many times when I was melting down, and what people on the blog not know but both of us do, is I woke you up constantly in 2014 as you helped me keep my sanity. I don’t need that constant help now thankfully, but I know if I did you would be there for me. I know you got the test I sent you, thinking it wouldn’t be seen until morning … But thank you for reading it and responding. You are such a generous person with your help to others. Thank you always brother. Hugs. Scottie

  2. I echo what the others have said, dear Scottie … I wish you had evacuated, gone north and inland, but since you didn’t, please, please just take care as best you can, and PLEASE do keep us posted, for we all love you and will be worried until we hear that Milton is gone and you & Ron are okay. Love ‘n hugs, dear Scottie!

    1. Hi Jill, you really are a wonderful person. Please understand that Ron made the house a fortress and I watched the information and weather strictly. The most damage done by this storm was to the north of it. If we had gone that way we would have been caught in horrible winds, flooding, and no fuel. So we shot the odds, and it looks like this time we were correct. Tomorrow will be the day we have assess everything. Hugs. Scottie

      1. Thank you so much, Scottie, but I don’t feel much like a wonderful person … here I am complaining about little things while others have so many bigger problems than mine. I smacked myself upside the head this morning for just that!

I hope you and Ron are still safe and I’m very glad the storm went north of you, though I still grieve for those most affected. Keep safe, my friend, and … well, I’ll email you soon. Hugs ‘n love

        1. Dearest Jill. One of the things I think most endearing of you is your humility about yourself and your good works. You never realize the inspiration you are and have been to so many who read your posts and read about your life. How you welcome others who are different into your home, share their holidays with them as you share yours with them also. So many times when I was down and struggling emotionally, so very tired, reading one of your posts and the commenters lifted me back up and recharged me again. There is good in the world, sunshine in the dark and you provide examples of that. Thank you. Hugs.

          1. You always bring a smile to my face with your uplifting and encouraging words, dear Scottie! If my words somehow inspire or motivate … or even just educate others, then it is all worth the effort! I just hope to make a difference, even a very small one, before I leave this world. And it brings a big smile to know that sometimes I have been able to lift you back up and help recharge your batteries! Big HUGS
