Stand with Sarah McBride: Join the Bathroom Ban Protest

21Nov

I assume you read this blog because you care about trans rights. At the very least, you are not hostile to women like me. As such, I have a favor to ask of you.

You may or may not be aware. The very first openly transgender person was elected to the House of Representatives in this past election cycle. Sarah McBride was elected to Congress to represent the state of Delaware in an at-large House district. The people of Delaware believe she is a good choice to represent their interests in Congress.

Unfortunately, the Republicans in the House have seen fit to disrespect her in a truly nasty way. They have decided to bring a transgender bathroom ban to the halls of Congress. This disgusting turn of events began with Nancy Mace of South Carolina. She introduced a resolution this week. It would ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol. She has said that the bill “absolutely” targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride. House Speaker Mike Johnson has voiced support for this move.

Sadly, among the Democratic caucus, only Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has had the courage to speak out forcefully. A few others have joined her in opposing this move. It simply has not received the widespread condemnation that is so resoundingly deserved.

Now to that favor I mentioned. Today, there is a petition circulating. It allows cisgender women to state that they are opposed to such actions “in their names.” As I write this, almost 2700 cis women have signed the petition. It needs many more signatures. I ask you to sign this petition.

Share it with like minded women who also are unafraid of transgender women in “women’s spaces.” I’m providing a link to the petition below, with the exact title given to it.

Not In Our Name: Cisgender Women Against Trans Bathroom Bans – Action Network

The journey continues. The Republicans are sending strong signals about how they intend my life to be in the future. I will not be silenced.

(I stole this because the reblog button is not present there, I’m sure it will be back, but meanwhile, it’s bedtime, so I stole it. Please sign and continue to disseminate this, all right? And thank you!)

  1. The reblog button is back. What an oddity that is. You can display a “Press This” or “Reblog” on my (outdated) WP theme. Only one will appear depending on whether you are logged in to WP when you visit. But, yeah, that button got turned off again, after an ill-fated suggestion from WP support caused me to temporarily lose the theme. Once restored, I had to manually reset the customizations, and I missed the Reblog button.

    1. If you’re happy, I’m happy. Some bloggers look at stats, and/or don’t like to be stolen from, or any other misunderstanding can come. But it’s an important post and needs to be disseminated. Thank you, Janet!

  2. Hi. Ali thank you for posting this. Sadly with the computers being out of commission for 2 and a half days then me being out of commission for a day, I have missed all of this. I am strongly supportive of trans people’s rights, both as adults and kids. I am not a woman or I would gladly sign the petition. One rumor is McBride did not want the democrats to make a big deal of it because some would have it used against them in primary votes if they came to her aid. However all voting has shown support for trans rights wins even in red states by 67%. But fear spreads faster than truth ever can. I am watching a Vaush video from a day ago with Erin Reed. I will post it. Hugs

    1. Democrats aren’t going to run against each other over trans rights. That was likely a Russian/Russian based rumor. And, as you say, people want to let people be people and exist.

      1. I agree Ali. Did you see AOC’s response to the House bathroom ban? If not please look it up as it is great. She framed the issue wonderfully. If you can’t find it please let me know. Also tell me if you think it should be posted? Hugs

        1. It’s AOC. Yes, it should be posted if only because she is sparklingly awesome. I’ll look for it, too, though. But if you have it at hand, please post it?

          1. For some reason, I was thinking this was the “unplugged game controller” comment AOC made, but about MTG. I’m answering from the column under the bell, so I don’t see everything. This post was a couple of days ago, and the right just keeps pumping poop all over everything about everything. I can only take in so much, so once a day’s past, it’s past. sigh Anyway, it is right up there, as you say, I watched it again, and remember it from the other night.

Right now, I’m enjoying Kevin Belton cooking while I get my pre-lunch jog. That makes everything all right!

        1. I actually did watch that, Scottie, from Janet’s post on her page. I remember it now. It’s been a few days-sorry! I watched that Thursday night before I set this up for Friday AM.

I just hope we get lots of signatures on that petition!
