      1. As you know, this is incredibly important to me. And not just because of the personal impact it may have on me. I have so many trans friends, many much earlier in their transition. They would be destroyed, possibly even made suicidal, by these moves if TFG is able to do this.

                1. Advanced apology….this went on longer than I initially expected. It’s what happens with a Welsh Socialist gets going…..

                  There is a distinct and superficially well-managed world-wide mood of reactionary intolerance alive and active within the world. It is taking place of several fronts mostly noticeable in the areas of Race, Religion and Gender, although arguably in Climate Change Denial too.
                  In the case of former three, prejudice, ignorance and fear have been exploited by opportunists looking to make material gain out of their own intolerances. These are also mixed into a most toxic brew in which a community experiencing its own persecution will turn on another, maybe just out of anger or maybe to garner some crumb of favour from the larger intolerance.

                  We should be living in a time of social advancement and the necessary constructive dialogues to develop and evolve those advancements, or at least encourage a spirit of acceptance. Instead here we are in one of those ugly situation in which that which cannot be understood is to be deemed a danger.

                  And the words and phraseologies being used confuse the issue. For instance ‘anti-gender’ movement. Now just what is that supposed to convey? It appears to be an unholy alliance of groups which are against…well that is hard to pin down, everything progressive? And yet some are feminists? Selective rights again. Anyway what does this phrase -anti-gender’ actually mean? When I read that those words the meaning comes across as ‘We are against gender stereotypes’ and yet they are doing the exact opposite, imposing them. In my grimmer humour this example reminds me of The communist jargon of state control in which the phrase ‘Democrat Centralism’ was touted- translation ‘We’ve decided. Do as you are told.’

                  At this juncture being 74 years of age from and lived what could be loosely termed conventional /traditional /nuclear (what the heck- another era?) the current number of ‘gender’ terms or post-gender (is that a term or did I just create it?) confuse me and my beloved wife of 51 years. Yet, we say, who are we to judge? This is happening. Being of the more eternally curious nature I am analytically intrigued by the social diversity (I was a UK Civil Servant. It’s in my nature). Much I cannot yet grasp. But so what? All I need to know is when my Intolerance Radar is giving me Red Alert warnings, it’s time to be wary of the suspects who say something is a ‘threat to society’
                  Personal Example / Experience: Our one grandson is, arguably, I think bi-sexual, he has married through a civil ceremony someone who through our spectrum we would term a ‘young woman’, they reject that identity I am not actually sure how they identify themselves, being very British I feel that is ‘prying’. They are in our elderly eyes a lovely person and we are very fond of them, getting quite grand-paternal/maternal. As a couple they are beautiful together. That’s all we need to know.

                  Before I really do go into one of 1,000- 2,000 words essays condemning the folly of Human Intolerance and where it will lead, (This sometimes leads into a quintessentially example of UK Left-wing in-fighting- being a type of Socialist ) I will conclude.
                  You and you community have my sympathy and support, I wish you well. May Hope flourish and societies improve.

                  The only justifiable intolerance is intolerance of Intolerance.

                  1. Roger, thank you for your insights. I have no qualms agreeing with what you have said. As for post-gender? I personally haven’t heard that one, but it sounds as though it might be a variation on agender. Agender means someone who simply doesn’t identify as any gender.

                    I wish your grandson and his partner well. It heartens me to see you so easily using they/them pronouns for them.

                    I would note that, in addition to race, religion, and gender, sexuality is also under attack, to a lesser degree at this point in time. Here in the US, though, we have politicians and judges talking about reversing same sex marriage rights.

                    I personally am 66 years old, so I also lived through all of those eras as well. It was difficult for me to come to terms with who I was, and it took a very long time, because of many factors, most of which were societal.

                    ‘The only justifiable intolerance is intolerance of Intolerance.” On that topic, I refer you to Karl Popper and the paradox of intolerance. Given the obvious social awareness you present, I suspect you may already be aware of the concept.

                    1. Only too pleased to exchange views Janet.

                      Yes the Paradox of Intolerance ties me up in all sorts of knots.
                      My political nature tends towards the Authoritarian of a Left Wing sort. This however is a bit of a dream scenario, because as history shows no matter how good the intentions, corruption, fanaticism along with in-fighting all unaccountable to the public will sooner or later settle in. Examination of the records indicates that whereas Democracy as we have seen it in the post WWII world is a flawed form of government it is far superior to any other being practiced in the world today.
                      That said I maintain that Democracy must always be vigilant and at times a bit tough with its internal foes. There can be no complacency, there can be no ignorance and there must always be a striving for improvement. The corrosive forces of Ignorance, Hate and Neurotic fantasists (as seen in Climate Denial, Anti-vax to name but two) must be consistently challenged and shown to be not just detrimental but threats to the Stability and Well-Being of Society. Just laughing at them on TV or Social Media does not hack it……

                      Annnndddd now I’m ‘off’ again. Sorry about that. OK. I’m done before I get too lurid… just now anyways.

                      The one matter I will close on is the word ‘Unity’. It is saddening to witness the in-fighting which goes on amongst what are essentially progressive groups but have, as is Human Nature missed some of the focus of The Big Picture.
                      In this I would urge folk to consider WWII and the Allies….. Federal Republic USA, Imperial Royalist Britain and Authoritarian USSR none of which stood close examination but united against the far worse alternatives of Nazi Germany and a Warped idea of Bushido Japan.
                      Differences sometimes have to be set aside for the Greater Good.

  3. Hi everyone. As I wrote on Janet’s blog, we MUST not shrink back to protect ourselves. That is a sure fire losing strategy. It is what the Harris campaign tried to do, pretend the issue doesn’t exist, that trans people don’t exist. We must go full force in support of trans people, we must do so in public, in the social media, in comment sections. The goal is to show trans people as the normal people they are, as our sisters and brothers, as our professionals like our doctors and lawyers, our favorite actors and sports stars. Like gay people trans people are our great neighbors that we are friends with. Yes there will be some backlash, but it must be done. The haters are gaining ground because they are out in force, very vocal, making outlandish claims. We must be just as vocal and loud in our support and drown them out and show they are wrong. Sadly the bigots and haters have big money on their side of this issue, we don’t have those resources, yet. But we must stand together or hang separately. Hugs
