Comment… “Just checking if you are a horrible person ”

When I first started watching the Reverend it was because he was defending gay people.  He then defended trans people.  He was against the message of hate preachers of his religion.  I left a comment on one of his videos not expecting a response.  I got one.  I explained who I was as an openly gay man in a same gender relationship, that I did not believe in the supernatural, and while I rejected the outdated morals of the Christian bible I did live by the ideals of being a good person and treating others as I wished to be treated.  I mentioned that I believed in doing the best we could to help others and I felt I followed the best of what Jesus asked of people.  Then I ended with about the same question as this video is about.  Does your god have room in his kingdom for me or if there is a heaven will I be allowed there or will I be sentenced to eternal punishment.  His reply was very welcoming and he replied that if anyone lived by the things Jesus asked it did not matter if you believed in him or not.  If you were a good person you would be judged on that.  He welcomed me to his channel.   I felt very comfortable with his reply, very accepted.  Recently he posted a video asking for his viewers feelings on his message and I commented on the interaction with the channel I had.  I got likes and responses from many of his followers that said I was welcoming and their god definitely had room for me, I was included not excluded from him.  I think if the churches preached this message they would have far more members and less anger at the religion.   Hugs

    1. Hi Annie. I hope you have been well. I am glad you resubscribed. I don’t know if you noticed but I added two contributing authors. So there is a flavor of three different voices making up the community. I am an atheist but I do like the ideas of helping others as best you can and being as kind to others as possible. The golden rule stuff. Rev. Trevors is against things like Christian Nationalism, forcing the Christian religion in public schools, or using the bible to bash others. He admits the bible got a lot of things wrong, and that it is not to be taken as infallible. He supports the LGBTQ+ and other minorities. He preaches a message of love, inclusion and is against the hate preachers. Hugs

      1. Thanks, Scottie. I learned from one of Michael’s comments that ali is working with you. That’s how I knew I was “out of the loop.” I didn’t know there’s a third person.

        Best regards!
        Annie

  1. I think if the churches preached this message they would have far more members and less anger at the religion.” The experience in Aotearoa says otherwise. The liberal inclusive churches are in free-fall while the Bible literalist evangelical/Pentecostal/fundamentalist churches promoting regressive, intolerant “morality” are growing, albeit from a tiny base. If the promotion of equity, inclusion, and social justice were the hallmarks of membership, then Quakers would have more that the 1000 members and attenders that they have in NZ. And as we have, Christians, non-Christians, agnostics, atheists, non-theists, panentheists, animists, Wiccans, Buddhists, and more amongst our membership, theology isn’t a barrier. My suspicion is that as a society becomes more progressive, liberal and inclusive, fewer people feel the need for organised religion. Those who are uncomfortable with such s “woke” society migrate to organisations that promote outdated ideology. Hence the rise of membership in conservative regressive churches.

    1. Hi Barry. Sadly as we found out in the US with Fox and other right wing media that push anger and outrage that anger produces some chemical in the brain that starts to feel good to these people and they need to amp up the outrage to keep getting those feelings. Plus the people that watch these shows feel they belong to that community and they love it, it binds them to those who hate those things they do. That is why these shows get more strident and push more extreme rhetoric throughout the day. By evening they are foaming at the mouth crazy.

Here in the US where churches are losing membership and butts in the pews surveys have shown when young people are asked why they are not religious or going to church the younger people cite the hate directed at the LGBTQ+ and other minorities such as immigrants. The majority of people don’t like these hate preachers and those places not accepting of others. The basic idea of being kind to others. I recently posted of a restaurant that the owners openly proclaimed to be members of the tRump cult so the LGBTQ+ were not welcome nor would be served in the place. They closed after 6 weeks due to lack of business.

I like the idea of an accepting community that accepts groups that you have mentioned that the Quakers have opened the doors of their meeting halls to. It is a group I could feel comfortable being a member of. Best wishes.

    1. Hi Roger. As I told both Annie Rev. Trevors teaches the love of Jesus for all people, he teaches inclusion, he rejects the anger, hate, and vengeance of the Old Testament god. Hate preachers know that anger and outrage creates cult like followers who give more because they are being taught they are threatened somehow by these others so much stand together to save themselves. I think in a way it gives them the same being worshiped rush that tRump gets. They want the congregation to follow them not Jesus or the bible. I think the god that is in the New Testament wouldn’t be favorable to them on the day they are judged by that being. Hugs

    1. Hi Roger. Rev. Trevors is one of those people who have an incredible memory and ability to reason about things especially when talking about how to relate biblical writings to modern times. I think if more church leaders were as inclusive and preaching of love, acceptance, and tolerance as he is their churches wouldn’t be losing so many members. I originally did not leave the church that saved me from my abuse because I did not believe, that came much later. I left the church because they were anti-homosexual and were strident about it. I had already accepted I was gay as a teenager, and then I found out in the military that sex / relationships with consenting adults of my same gender was wonderful and fulfilling. What the haters don’t understand is people who are gay have the very same feelings and needs that the straight people do. And that feeling of need applies to teenagers also. If my church had been open and accepting of me I would have stayed in, going to their seminary to become a Pastor in the SDA church. So the church and their god lost me due to hate and intolerance. Hugs

      1. Intolerance and Prejudice need the blindness of Ignorance and Fear to flourish, they have to feed that to their followers. There is no rational thinking there.

It is a bit of a long story, but to summarise. If Hitler had simply been an ardent German patriot and promoted a message of ‘We are all Germans together’ then many intellectuals would not have fled Germany and Germany might well have had an Atom-Bomb before anyone else.
European scientists both Jewish and otherwise who got to America were quick to warn the FDR govt about Nazi research into atomic weapons and thus the whole American programme was kick started.
True the Bomb was not used on Germany but the conventional bombing was horrific and the Russians came looking for payback too.
        That’s where Hate takes you.
This crew in the Whitehouse have no idea there is always payback.
As for their Church buddies, well they have Someone Else to answer to.

        Take care both of you.
        Roger & Sheila.
