  1. well that is an effing mess, isn’t it. My birth mother was from Canada. I was born here, years later; adopted by her sister (it took me years before I figured this out) and basically I have TWO birth certificates that are 80 years old. The only original part of any of that is the hospital that I was born in, and they recently removed the birthing section (and I suspect all the records there) permanently. It would appear that unless I can find both certificates and dig up the now invisible hospital stuff, Im not voting anywhere, for anything. Burden doesn’t even come close. Pity the poor soul who has no birth certificate…

    1. Not yet, but it’s time to light up every Senator’s email/calls/even letters about not putting this on the floor. Also, yeah, getting in touch with our local-local!-election officials, usually our County Clerks, and finding out from them what they could need from us to be sure to be able to vote. Most county clerks are not in favor of the federal government doing this-sort of driving in their lane-but they’re knowledgeable about what you need now, and what you could need later, and will answer questions. For you, Judy, take those birth certs with you, so your clerk can see what you have. She will either know what you do, or she’ll know who to work with to find out. Frequently, they’d even make the call for a resident, but I bet they’re really busy now, and may not offer. If there’s no one behind you, though, I’d ask her if she is able to make the call while you’re there.

This law would be found to be unconstitutional, but knowing this admin., they’ll be allowed to proceed until a court decision. So, the more prepared to vote we are, the better.

      1. Hi Ali. Very valuable information. I am going to see what documents I can get. I wonder if it is possible to get a new birthcretificate with my married name. I know some states let trans people get new ones with their chosen name on them. Hugs

    2. Hi Judy. I understand. That is what the republicans want the bill to do. I also won’t be able to vote. I changed my last name taking Ron’s name when we got married. The republicans claim that people just need to show a marriage certificate, but that is an open lie. The federal bill doesn’t include that but does say states can include it if it suits them. Red states controlled by republicans wont allow it. So I will have to try to get a passport I can’t afford. Hugs
