Louisiana Governor Gets K-12 “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

The New Orleans Times Picayune reports:

The Louisiana Senate passed legislation Thursday afternoon to forbid school staffers from talking to students in grades K-12 about sexual orientation or gender identity. House Bill 122 passed 28-7, with all Senate Republicans and two Democrats in support. It now heads to Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican who has claimed without citing evidence that some teachers aim to indoctrinate students with “radical” ideas. Landry is expected to sign the measure into law.

Sen. Beth Mizell, R Franklinton, said the bill’s intent was not to harm LGBTQ+ students but to make schools a “safe space” where parents know that staff won’t discuss sensitive topics with their children. The lawmaker behind HB 122, Rep. Dodie Horton, R-Haughton, also authored a bill to require all public schools and universities in the state to post the Ten Commandments. The Senate overwhelmingly approved that measure last week.

Last year Democratic former Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed Mizell’s anti-trans bill and Horton’s first attempt at a “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Mizell is an occasional guest on hate group leader Tony Perkins’ podcast. Horton has said she tried again on her “Don’t Say Gay” bill upon the encouragement of her pastor.

So I live in Louisiana and I work in a public university. The Ten Commandments will really go over well on my campus, which has a very high student population of Muslims, and, as far as I can tell, almost no Jews. I should post the three versions of the Ten Commandments on my office wall. In Hebrew. Which, yes, I can read.

Don’t say gay. We really are going backwards. I graduated from high school in 1979, and no one ever said anything about gay, except when taunting the faggots and calling them, well, faggots. Like me. I hate this state and have already told my husband that I am leaving upon my retirement in two years.

Similar to you, homophobia was strong in my remote town in northern Alberta. I graduated in 1977, when nothing positive was ever said about gay except ‘faggot’ and ‘homo’ and the french versions fifi’ and ‘tapette’. Ninety percent of LGBTQ+ youth in the U.S. say politics have negatively impacted their lives in the past year, according to a new report from LGBTQ+ suicide prevention organization The Trevor Project.

On Wednesday, researchers at the nonprofit unveiled their sixth annual survey on mental health among LGBTQ+ young people. Drawing on responses from more than 18,000 LGBTQ+ people between the ages of 13 and 24, the survey correlated anti-LGBTQ+ political issues with negative mental health outcomes for youth.

Recent politics had a negative impact on 90% of LGBTQ+ youth, researchers found, and 39% said they or their families had considered moving to another state due to new anti-LGBTQ+ policies or laws. (That number rose to 45% of trans or nonbinary youth.) Nearly half of respondents aged 13-17 said they had been bullied for being LGBTQ+ in the past year.

 

In turn, the report found that 39% of all respondents had seriously considered suicide in the past year, a drop of just 2% since the Trevor Project’s 2023 survey. That rate was higher for trans youth, and significantly so for young people of color. Only 50% of respondents who wanted mental health care were able to access it last year, the report also found.

At the same time, researchers stressed that young people are not naturally disposed to poorer mental health — rather, LGBTQ+ youth are “placed at higher risk because of how they are mistreated and stigmatized in society.” Respondents whose family, school, and/or community supported their identity, and who did not experience anti-LGBTQ+ bullying or discrimination, reported significantly lower rates of suicidal attempts or ideation.

 

“Once again, this year’s survey shows that considering or attempting suicide is not uncommon among LGBTQ+ young people,” said Dr. Ronita Nath, Vice President of Research at The Trevor Project, in a statement accompanying the full report this week. “However, many of the contributing risk factors for suicide are preventable, and often rooted in victimizing behaviors of others. The results of this survey clearly identify a need for adults and allies to create more affirming environments for LGBTQ+ young people, and better support them in being their true selves.”

The new report also looked at the impact of having a supportive school environment, finding that youth who had access to LGBTQ+-affirming spaces — especially gender-affirming spaces for trans youth — generally reported better mental health and lower rates of suicidal thoughts. An analysis of hate crime data in the Washington Post in March found a spike in intimidation and assault against LGBTQ+ students in K-12 schools between 2021 and 2022. Analysts found that the increase was more pronounced in states where lawmakers had introduced new policies restricting LGBTQ+ speech in schools.

“With such striking numbers and families literally wanting to uproot their homes to seek safety, lawmakers must seriously reconsider the real and damaging impact that their anti-LGBTQ+ policies and rhetoric create,” said Janson Wu, Senior Director of State Advocacy and Government Affairs, in the Trevor Project’s statement this week. “No ‘political victory’ should be worth risking the lives of young people.”

Since last year, the Trevor Project’s leadership has faced criticism for alleged mismanagement and labor violations related to the national 988 suicide prevention hotline. Last summer, members of the Trevor Project employee bargaining unit said they were laid off in an act of alleged union busting, while outside workers contracted for the crisis line said they were abruptly let go despite the now-permanent program’s expansion. In April, the Trevor Project laid off another six percent of its staff, leading some to comment that the internal mood was increasingly “gloomy.”

“The crisis workers are the lowest paid people in the organization […] which just baffles me because, you know, they’re doing the literal work of the mission of the org,” one anonymous source told the Washington Blade last month.

Israel is desperate to keep any information or pictures of their genocide and total destruction of Gaza from leaking out to the public.  I just found out this morning that Israel military is telling the roving gang thugs that are blocking and destroy aid trucks food supplies where these trucks will be.  Also the Israeli military has again targeted food and medical people, including shelling the emergency room and using tanks to shell the only other semi functioning hospital in Northern Gaza.   The Israeli government / military is doing everything they can to destroy every aspect of Palestinians lives, culture, buildings, all so the people if any remain will have no way to survive if they try to stay there.  The goal is to force the survivors to leave, be relocated so Israel can regain the land it claims as its own.  Hugs.  Scottie

The Israeli government will return a camera and broadcasting equipment it had seized from The Associated Press on Tuesday, reversing course hours after it blocked the news organization’s live video of Gaza and faced mounting criticism for interfering with independent journalism.

The AP’s live video of Gaza was back up early Wednesday in Israel.

The government seized the AP equipment positioned in southern Israel after accusing it of violating a new media law by providing images to the satellite channel Al Jazeera.

Israeli officials used the new law on May 5 to close down Qatar-based Al Jazeera within Israel, confiscating its equipment, banning its broadcasts and blocking its websites.

After Israel seized the AP equipment, the Biden administration, journalism organizations and an Israeli opposition leader condemned the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and pressured it to reverse the decision.

Israel’s communications minister, Shlomo Karhi, said late Tuesday on the social platform X: “I have now ordered to cancel the action and return the equipment to the AP.”

Karhi said the defense ministry will undertake a review of news outlets’ positioning of live video of Gaza. Officials hadn’t previously told AP the positioning of its live camera was an issue. Instead, they repeatedly noted that the images appeared in real-time on Al Jazeera.

 

 

Al Jazeera is one of thousands of AP customers, and it receives live video from AP and other news organizations.

“While we are pleased with this development, we remain concerned about the Israeli government’s use of the foreign broadcaster law and the ability of independent journalists to operate freely in Israel,” said Lauren Easton, AP’s vice president of corporate communications.

Officials from the Communications Ministry arrived at the AP location in the southern town of Sderot on Tuesday afternoon and seized the equipment. They handed the AP a piece of paper, signed by Karhi, alleging it was violating the country’s foreign broadcaster law.

Shortly beforehand, AP was broadcasting a general view of northern Gaza. The AP complies with Israel’s military censorship rules, which prohibit broadcasts of details like troop movements that could endanger soldiers. The live video has generally shown smoke rising over the territory.

The AP had been ordered verbally last Thursday to cease the live transmission, which it refused to do.

Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid called the government’s move against AP “an act of madness.”

Karhi responded to Lapid that the law passed unanimously by the government states that any device used to deliver Al Jazeera content could be seized.

Journalism organizations condemned Israel’s seizure of AP equipment, and the Biden administration also applied pressure.

“As soon as we learned about the reports, the White House and the State Department immediately engaged with the government of Israel at high levels to express our serious concern and ask them to reverse this action,” said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the National Security Council. “The free press is an essential pillar of democracy and members of the media, including AP, do vital work that must be respected.”

When Israel closed down Al Jazeera’s offices earlier this month, media groups warned of the serious implications for press freedom in the country.

“Israel’s record on press freedom already has been dismal throughout the war,” the Foreign Press Association said in a statement on Tuesday. “It has prevented independent access to Gaza for foreign journalists.”

The AP live video shot from Sderot has provided a rare independent glimpse of the situation in Gaza.

Israel has long had a rocky relationship with Al Jazeera, accusing it of bias against the country. Netanyahu has called it a “terror channel” that spreads incitement.

Al Jazeera is one of the few international news outlets that has remained in Gaza throughout the war, broadcasting scenes of airstrikes and overcrowded hospitals and accusing Israel of massacres. AP is also in Gaza.

During the previous Israel-Hamas war in 2021, the army destroyed the building housing AP’s Gaza office, claiming Hamas had used the building for military purposes. The AP denied any knowledge of a Hamas presence, and the army never provided any evidence to back up its claim.

The war in Gaza began with a Hamas attack in Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw 250 others taken hostage. More than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since then, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count.

I love how the Rev. says the laws, the commandments have been misused, abused, and as tools to hurt others.  He also wants religion out of schools.  But he says rather than ten thou shall not rules, put up things that tell them the good things people, Christians, kids should do.  Things like the golden rule, things like the Beatitudes, the idea of feed the hungry, help others.  This is a Christian I really like.  Hugs.  Scottie

The Cass Review Is A TOTAL SH*TSHOW

This is a great take down of how bad the Cass report is that the anti-trans haters are right now loving to cite.  Vaush even includes the fact that Cass herself disavows the report and says puberty blockers should be given out at younger ages than they are.  The report is a shitshow.  She almost comes out and admits she was paid to find ways to prevent, mock, and give reasons why kids who are claiming not to be the gender they were assigned at birth should be given gender affirming care per the trans best care guidelines, but instead should be sent to delaying / conversion therapy places.  It is another open and shut case of the anti-trans right wing activists doing all they can to deny reality and roll back society to the 1950s.  They don’t agree or want trans people, so no young person can know their gender.  But they agree that every cis child knows their gender … so why not the kids that are different?  Because they don’t want that, nor do they want to admit it.   Face it, this is no different from the people that said homosexuals were a choice just to rebel against their parents, that same sex marriage was not a real marriage, that every gay or lesbian person just needed sex with the other sex to make them straight.  It is just a denial of a reality they don’t like.  They don’t want to admit medical science and society has moved past their comfort spot.  Oh well, sorry but I don’t have to live my life to make you comfortable or happy.   Hugs.  Scottie

Israeli Activists Block & Attack Aid Shipment For Starving Gazans

By my dogs that love gravy, what has Israel become.  They have become the very thing that gave them a state, that gave them world sympathy.  They have become the apartheid fascist nation that makes one group out to be subhuman, to be lessor, to blame all things on.   Israel has taken its first Jewish victimization and while victimizing others still claims to be the victim.  Shades of tRump.  The phrase “NEVER AGAIN” used to stand for something … but to have meaning it has to apply to everyone.  Israeli government has for decades trashed it.  

The Israeli government worked for decades to teach their people that Palestinians were not humans like them, that they should either die and go away or simply be happy being slave labor mistreated having nothing.  The government has been teaching their people the same message that the southern states during slavery and still today want to teach about black people.  These people also claim that Hamas is refusing to release the hostages without knowing or understand that their own government is the ones blocking that.  Hamas has been trying to make a deal to release the hostages they took for 5 or more months but Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu has been blocking it.  For two reasons.  One because as soon as the war is over he loses his protection from prosecution for breaking the laws, the ultra religious groups want the Palestinians gone, and the wealthy including tRump’s son-in-law want to build luxury resorts along the coast of Gaza.  See the real issues.  

Oh and one important issue.  These food trucks were being escorted my the Israeli military who simply did nothing as they people attacked the trucks, harmed the drives, and destroyed the aid.  Yes the young people knew where to be on unpublished shipments of food, had support of a well funded by a shadow group support, and the military that was there to protect the food aid simply did nothing.  Total government support of this vile disregard of the death and starvation of other humans.   Just to drive them out, kill them, and get their land.   

To be clear, Israel had become an oppressor nation.  They are out of compliance with international laws and with moral decency.  It could have and would have been stopped long ago except … money.  The AIPAC … The American Israel Public Affairs Committee is the largest most powerful lobby in DC.  They spent 603 million in lobbing congress, both parties but mostly republicans to do everything for Israel that is possible.  To give Israel aid money, weapons, to defend them at the US, everything for Israel and to hell with the US needs.  It is scary how many republicans are in debt or working for foreign government, Russia, Israel, Egypt.   

We are witnessing the lowest of the low.

I posted about this situation the other day.  We have an ideology driven supreme court who wants to make rules based on their religious convictions rather than law.  They have an extreme religious faith and demand the right to make the rest of the country that way.

Some more old things I need to clear out.

For those that don’t think this is important, I worked with some Catholic doctors that were so religious high rollers that they condemn and refused to treat those they felt broke god’s laws or their church rules.  Specifically the LGBTQ+.  I have repeated told of an ICU doctor who was assigned a very sick and dying openly gay man in a same sex relationship.  This was just before same sex marriage was legal country wide and before it was legal in Florida.  The patient’s lover / boyfriend had complete power of attorney over all the patient’s medical, financial, and other life decisions, something all of us gay people in same sex relationships did so our partners could make our hospital decisions when we couldn’t.   This doctor refused to listen or include the patient’s gay partner disregarding their relationship.  He went so far as to call the patient’s estranged family members to try to get them to overrule the wishes of the partner.  The patient’s partner got a lawyer and legal told the doctor he had to include the partner and treat him as the next of kin legally.  The doctor walked on the floor, took the chart and signed himself off the case.  Then loudly told all of us he was not the doctor of record for the patient and he wouldn’t treat him, so do not call him or his people for any reason for that patient.  That left us and the hospital scrambling.  The ICU intensives all worked for the same practice started by that doctor, so they had to find some doctor qualified to step in to be the patient’s doctor because the ICU requires a doctor to be qualified on respirators such as a pulmonologist.   Yes they can have other doctors treat them in the ICU but in our ICU’s because of the possibility the patients would have to be intubated in case of a code the ICU and all patients had to be managed by the intensivist / pulmonologist.  He was always a self righteous prick, he and his top doctors always bragging about their connections to the Catholic hierarchy locally and the time they spent at the Vatican.  This holy super Christian was willing to let a man die rather than acknowledge his male partner and same sex relationship.   Hugs.  Scottie
