Can Republicans take a day off from their race to the bottom?

We get the psycho troglodyte twins, Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene, heckling during the State of the Union on one day. And then in the same week, we get the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, bullying kids.

At a press event at the University of South Florida in an area where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends indoor masking due to high COVID-19 risk, DeSantis bullied high school students for wearing face masks, calling it “political theater.” I think that’s a Rand Paul talking point.

President Joe Biden delivered his first State of the Union speech last night, and he delivered. Last night, we saw leadership from an American president. It was refreshing.

President Biden came out strong in his first SOTU address, standing with Ukraine and condemning Vladimir Putin’s tyranny. A heartwarming moment was when he pointed out one of his special guests, the Ukraine ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova, who appeared moved by the sustained applause. Markarova even got a hug from First Lady Jill Biden.

President Biden stated, “In the battle between democracy and autocracies, democracies are rising to the moment and the world is clearly choosing the side of peace and security.”

President Biden pledged to stand with Ukraine and pointed out other nations doing the same. He said, “Members of the European Union, including France, Germany, Italy, as well as countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Korea…

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky went from being an actor, the voice of the Ukraine version of Paddington Bear, and the winner of the first season of Ukraine’s Dancing with the Stars (that’s a thing?) to being the man inspiring his nation to fight.

A video clip of Zelensky standing in the middle of the streets of Kyiv with other government officials has helped make the Ukraine president an international war hero. In the clip, he says, “We are all here, defending our independence, our country. And it will stay that way. Glory to the men and women defending us. Glory to Ukraine. Glory to the heroes.”

While that video was made of Zelensky standing in the streets of a city being bombed, Vladimir Putin was sitting somewhere safe and posh with his greatest concern being for his own political safety. Putin doesn’t have to worry about his citizens dying, or…

There’s something seriously wrong with people who think being vile and disgusting is cute and clever. Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene appear to be in a race to be the most horrible creatures alive. Toxic Betty and Veronica are proof that being able to walk upright and have opposable thumbs doesn’t make you human.

The president deserves respect while delivering his (or her) State of the Union speech unless, of course, that president doesn’t respect the process himself. President Biden respects the presidency, the courts, Congress, and tradition. He deserves respect. But, there is room to express disagreement. If applause is allowed, then a certain amount of objection should be allowed as well. If the opposition party objects, it’s fair for them to grumble and boo…to a certain point.

Just after I finished this cartoon, CNN reported that Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has shut down Russia’s disinformation network…or they’re trying to. Meta is removing posts by supposed “independent” news agencies and fake personas (bots) targetting Ukrainians on Facebook and Instagram. I just checked and despite this announcement from Facebook, Russian state-owned propaganda outlets, posing as news, RT and Sputnik are still posting on Mega’s platforms. As of this writing, Sputnik posted a video 48 minutes ago on Facebook. RT posted a new one six minutes ago. RT and Sputnik running wild and uninhibited on social media is good news for people like Ted Rall, an American cartoonist/columnist who works for Sputnik and has been making whatabout posts deflecting for Putin’s war.

If Meta and other outlets want to shut down propaganda and the litany of pro-Putin bullshit, they need to shut down, not just the face accounts, but RT…

My editor asked for a cartoon on President Biden’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Ketanji Jackson Brown. I then saw an article where the chairperson for the Republican National Committee, Ronna McDaniel, had issued a statement about how “radical” KBJ is but nowhere in the statement did she mention what makes her so radical. So, I focused on that.
