Have Some Friday Comics

Also, a question. On Kids Baking Championship, one of the items required is a chocolate-dipped item. One young baker decided to use butterscotch instead of chocolate. They tempered it, they dipped their item, and presented it. When asked about it, since it wasn’t chocolate, they stated that their technique was the same, and the item was dipped; also, that the butterscotch right there among the chocolate in the same area of the pantry.

So. While chocolate is not butterscotch and vice-versa, does this item count as a chocolate-dipped item? Discuss in comments.

From “The Nib” Newsletter

“The Nib” still comes in email sometimes. This is an item that could be of interest, also not about very current US election news (though there could be a tad here and there. I mean this item; “The Nib” still has plenty political for right now.) Anyway, back to this; I keep thinking there are people reading here who don’t comment, and that maybe any of us is an artist interested in moving forward with their art, and this can help. -A

🤷

So, I can’t tell what’s showing and what isn’t. On the posting page, I can see the little block with the title, the hyperlink, and the tiny blurb. When I look at the preview, though, all I can see is “Home” as a hyperlink; it goes to Crucial Comix. So, below, is a snip from Crucial Comix’s “About” page. Check it out!

==========

home for essential nonfiction comics and zines.

Founded in 2024, we are a cartoonist-run small press that publishes narrative nonfiction comics and offers compelling classes on comics-making and practice.

Our Values

We believe that comics are a powerful way to shape how we perceive ourselves and the world. Comics can capture emotional realities, offering a profound way express feelings and experiences that are impossible to depict in words alone. Comics connect with readers, drawing new eyes to stories about politics, history, and identity. Comics are made around the world by people who want to share their ideas and dreams. In short, comics are crucial.

As cartoonists face down book bans, political censorship, and financial difficulty in publishing boundary-pushing work, it’s more important than ever to build a community of artists that is rooted in mutual support and enthusiasm.

Crucial Comix is all about skill-sharing, accessibility, flexibility, and experimentation. We are a small press that aims to be always evolving so we can be a relevant and reliable resource for artists. Our pitches are always open. Our classes are all offered sliding-scale. Our comics are all free to read. Each season, we welcome a cohort of volunteer editors to guide up-and-coming artists through the process of making a nonfiction comic.

Lay Lines by Carol Lay

I enjoy this artist’s comics every week. This one is particularly topical; the ones I see more often are in regard to mental health. I guess this one is, in its fashion, also. Enjoy! If you go to the comic page, you can go back through the other work, too.

Flamingo Stink Eye, by Clay Jones

Never surrender to water fowl Read on Substack

(This is really good; a worthy click.)

Shortly after Donald Trump was arrested last year in Fulton County, Georgia on charges related to electoral fraud in the 2020 election, he returned to X/Twitter for the first time since Elmo lifted his ban, and shared his mugshot with the caption, “Never surrender.”

Never mind the fact that it was a photo of him surrendering. Republicans are idiots. Merchandise with that image is for sale on his campaign’s website along with merch featuring images from the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Now, Trump will try to make money off this incident of a guy hiding in bushes with an assault rifle. What will they try to sell, pictures of his fat ass being whisked away on a golf cart? He also can’t parade around with a giant bandage from this incident since the bush person not only didn’t hit him with a bullet but didn’t even get a shot off. The potential assassin never even saw Trump.

The mental case was waiting in bushes along the golf course hoping Trump would eventually waddle by.

I got over 1,100 replies to my tweet about Trump being uninjured after not being shot at, and I think all the angry replies wish Trump was shot at so they can push the martyred victim bullshit. (snip-MORE)

Eleanor Roosevelt

I am an admirer of hers, and maybe when I finally grow up, I’ll be as like her as possible. I’ve named my phone after her, just as a reminder. She once said that no one can make us feel inferior without our consent. Many people say/said similar things, but when I first saw she said that, it clicked. I don’t always remember, but mostly I do. We all should. Now, here is Gavin Aung Than’s Zen Pencils for this week. I really appreciate this one, too!
