Jan 11 (Reuters) – The United States reported 1.35 million new coronavirus infections on Monday, according to a Reuters tally, the highest daily total for any country in the world as the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant showed no signs of slowing.

The previous record was 1.03 million cases on Jan. 3. A large number of cases are reported each Monday due to many states not reporting over the weekend. The seven-day average for new cases has tripled in two weeks to over 700,000 new infections a day.

The record in new cases came the same day as the nation saw the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients also hit an all-time high, having doubled in three weeks, according to a Reuters tally.

There were more than 136,604 people hospitalized with COVID-19, surpassing the record of 132,051 set in January last year.

While the Omicron variant is potentially less severe, health officials have warned that the sheer number of infections could strain hospital systems, some of which have already suspended elective procedures as they struggle to handle the increase in patients and staff shortages.

The surge in cases has disrupted schools, which are struggling with absences of staff, teachers and bus drivers.

Chicago canceled classes for a fourth day as the district and teachers failed to agree on how to deal with increased infections.

New York City suspended service on three subway lines as a large number of workers were out sick, according to its Twitter account. Companies’ plans for workers to return to office have also been derailed.

Deaths are averaging 1,700 per day, up from about 1,400 in recent days but within levels seen earlier this winter.

A redesigned COVID-19 vaccine that specifically targets the Omicron variant is likely needed, Pfizer Inc’s (PFE.N) CEO said on Monday, adding his company could have one ready to launch by March.

  1. Something this article doesn’t mention (at least in what you shared) is whether these hospitalizations are unvaccinated people. John Zande posted a graph on another blog that is a very good illustration of this. I made a copy and hope that it shows up here.

      1. Hello inspiredbythedivine1. I think this is a great opportunity for you to expand the knowledge of the world by telling us of your death and re-life events. After all, those who claim to have had them become quite famous and godly for example, Osiris, Tammuz, Adonis and Attis, Dionysus and Jesus.

I wonder with all that metal if you need an FCC license because you are either broadcasting or illegally receiving transmissions. If you are using 5G are you using the Chinese made one that is banned in the US like the cellphone companies or the much more expensive US version the rest of the world has ignored? I look forward with a smile on my face to your reply or a new post on this subject. Speaking of your wonderful blog, I am very frustrated. Again this morning I went to your site and found I was unfollowed. That means I missed your latest post. I re-followed. But if you make a post and I do not read / like it with in a day or two could you remind me. I get tons of email and may miss the notification or WordPress unfollows me. Thanks. Scottie

        1. Actually, Scottie, our Divine1 hasn’t posted anything for over a year! He claims it’s because of the WP blogging changes, but methinks, he’s just been to busy barbecuing babies in his basement.

    1. Hello Nan. You are correct this article did not separate the vaxxed from the non-vaxxed. I think I posted that a few days ago though? Sorry hard for me to concentrate right now. My blood sugar is exceedingly high. If it stays high in the morning Ron is insisting I contact my doctor. Before supper I was 400. The graphs you posted did show thank you. It is really had to get images to post in comments, you will have to tell me how you did it sometime. Thank John for me. I am not going to be visiting others blogs until I can stay out of bed for more than a few hours. Going to bed now. Scottie

      1. I can send you an email that tells how to post images in comments. However, did you ever read the email I sent related to using a different email address strictly for personal use? That way it won’t get lost in the “tons of email” you get. 🙂

        1. Hello Nan. The problem with using different email addresses for different things is they all get joined together when they hit my computer. I have three of my own email address active right now. All of them are picked up by Microsoft office outlook and delivered to my computer in the outlook program. So even though they are different email names and sites, two Gmail and one comcast, they all are in one big list. If I am at the computer I can see them come in and snap it from the list or go to outlook which stays open on my desk and look down the list until I see them. Anything I cannot see right away I use the search bar to search the mail list to find. The real issue happens when I am not at the desk and the email comes in, I don’t see it and don’t take the time to look through pages of new emails to see what I missed. If I don’t use outlook to bring all the email to me I have to keep three email sites open and then try to check them every few minutes to see if anything new has been added. I have used out look since it came out and I admit I have gotten very use to it, comfortable with it, and I find it hard to change my habit of using it. As for adding images to a comment I can only do it if I am adding the link to the page it is on. I cannot seem to just copy the image itself and paste it in a comment. Scottie

          1. Well, I understand that “getting used to” syndrome. 😁

In any case, I have sent you the “how to” info on inserting an image into a comment, so go check for an email from me. 🙂

            1. Hello Nan. I saved the page for future use. At quick glance it seems they use a link to their own page of the image I guess. I just took my blood sugar at 5:00. It was 445. Ron is really upset. So tomorrow morning first thing I have to contact the doctor’s office. He gave me a couple of insulin pens to keep in case of this and I should have contacted him yesterday but I kept hoping not to need to. Oh well. Scottie

              1. From everything I’ve read, blood sugar readings that are this high are REALLY, REALLY bad and affect your overall health … so pardon me for saying so, but I think you are FOOLISH not to have contacted your doctor before now.

And don’t tell me this “happens to me all the time” because it SHOULDN’T! And you know it!

                😠😤❗

                1. Hello Nan. You are correct. And I know it. I won’t argue against you on that. Ron loves your comment and said I should answer with just “Yes Ma’am”. In my defense though I would say that I was expecting it to drop quickly a couple days after the shots, which it doesn’t seem to be doing and this is the highest it has gone after the shots. Plus I have a new doctor that actually cares about my blood sugar and knows what he is doing. My new endocrinologist says that that the medications I am on won’t remove the blood sugar if I am on steroids which is part of what the shots are. He set a trigger of a week of fasting morning level of 178 or higher. A week would be at minimum of 5 days and it has been only four. But I admit I don’t think he meant me to wait if it went into the 300s or higher and stayed there. I will get a talking to I bet. But last month after a few days the blood sugar went down again. This time it went much higher and is staying there. Anyway I really was trying to avoid insulin. But will do what I have to do. Scottie
