Love – or at least a spike of users on the gay dating app Grindr – was reportedly in the Milwaukee air this week while the Republican National Convention was in town.
Over 1,000 users reported a Grindr outage in the Milwaukee area around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Downdetector, a website that collects online service status information.
The Grindr app also allegedly experienced problems in the Cream City on Thursday— the fourth and final day of the RNC — as well as in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. However, Grindr’s official status updates show there hasn’t been an outage since May.
Nevertheless, a Grindr user who did not want to be identified told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he noticed an influx of anonymous users this week.
“On any given day, you’ll go on there and see a headless torso or blank profile,” the man told the outlet Thursday.
The source explained that a headless photo on someone’s Grindr profile usually means the person is looking for a fling and not a relationship. On a normal day, the Grindr user said he usually comes across around 10 users who don’t show their face, but claimed he stopped counting at 50 anonymous profiles when he checked the app Thursday.
Newsweek has contacted Grindr for comment but has not heard back.
The buzz surrounding allegedly increased Grindr traffic in Milwaukee rapidly spread on social media. Even ex-Congressman Geroge Santos, who said he met his husband on Grindr, got involved.
“Grindr executives are calling the RNC convention the Grindr Superbowl,” Santos said in a video posted Wednesday.
“Let me tell you something: just come out of the closet boys. Come on, it’s fun. You can be gay and conservative,” he added. “But look, Grindr is already outing you anyway based on the hits and guess who is in town? It’s all you conservatives.”
This wouldn’t be the first time Grindr saw increased traffic in cities hosting the RNC. In 2016, the Cleveland area saw a 66% increase in Grindr traffic while the convention was in town, according to a Vice article. Comparatively, Grindr hotspots like Times Square, Capitol Hill, Disneyland, and South Beach, Florida did not see any comparable traffic increase at that time.
This trend isn’t just exclusive to the Republican convention, either, according to the same Vice article. Grindr saw a reported 148% increase in traffic around Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Arena during the week of the 2016 DNC.

The group kept passing out flyers that labeled Jewish people as pedophiles and screaming that those who are LGBTQ needed to “get the f—k home.” Their shirts read “pro white” on the front. On the back of the shirt, it read “whites against replacement.” They stood alongside a Nazi flag and a sign that said Let’s Go Brandon, a moniker against President Joe Biden.
“Joe Biden’s cabinet is 80% Jewish,” one of the group told our camera crew.
Men in the group were raising their arms in the same salute as Nazi soldiers did to Adolf Hitler during his fascist rise of power in the 1930s and 1940s.
“The Holocaust never happened,” they told our camera crew.

Those at Third and Broadway identified themselves as the Goyim Defense League, and they are defined as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are a group that primarily lends their hate to the Jewish community, though the group on Broadway was screaming about the Jewish, LGBTQ and the Black community.
“It’s time for white people to stand up for themselves,” the group told pedestrians walking by.
We captured a woman who was gay screaming at the group for being out there in front of her child. They screamed at her that she shouldn’t have any children.
“My daughter is scared of you!” the woman screamed, who said she had just come out of a restaurant.
Metro Nashville police officers were near the group on Lower Broadway.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville posted on Sunday about hate groups continuing to hand out flyers that show hatred against Jewish people, including Saturday night in Nashville.
“The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville is disgusted that once again our beloved city has been sullied by antisemitic instigators,” Jewish leaders said in a statement. “Last night, a group of roughly 15 Jew-haters handed out antisemitic literature in downtown while spewing loathsome rhetoric. We condemn this activity in the strongest possible way and denounce the perpetrators. Antisemitism — the irrational hatred of Jews — continues to escalate here in Middle Tennessee and around the country (and world). We are in constant contact with local law enforcement and thank them for their hard work and partnership in ensuring that the hateful words being espoused do not turn into violent actions against our community members or institutions.”
Previous hate groups in Nashville
The hate group the Patriot Front didn’t have a permit to march in the city, but they did so anyway last weekend.
The group went through the streets of downtown Nashville a “Reclaim America” banner, American flags, a Confederate flag and passing out flyers while chanting on their way to the front of the Capitol. Some also held red, white, and blue shields.
They also spray-painted their logo under the Woodland Street Bridge, which is vandalism.
In February, the group defaced the retaining wall in Brentwood on the side of Interstate 65. The Tennessee Department of Transportation had to paint over it.
Other racist flyers were passed out in downtown in February.

Having watched the goings on in both congress and the campaign trail, I’m coming to understand the typical voter for Trump. The Republican Convention is over and last night Donald Trump gave the longest, most bizarre and worst speech at a party convention in American history. Friends of mine from across the country who are not that involved in politics reached out to me shocked at how bat shit crazy he sounded, how long he went on, how unfit and unwell he so clearly is. That he was oh so weak not Trumpian strong. Here at Hopium none of this was a surprise. We’ve been talking about him from Day 1 here. We know he is a rapist, fraudster, traitor and felon. We know he is far more extreme and dangerous now than he was in 2016 or 2020. We know that this danger to our democracy, our freedoms and our future became far more manifest when he picked pro-Russia extremist JD Vance as his running mate and heir apparent. An incompletely rifted and submerged microcontinent has been recognised tens of millions of years after the tectonic shifts which birthed it began.
Understanding how microcontinents are born may help in disaster prevention during earthquakes.

The newly recognised microcontinent exists on a tectonic plate boundary between Canada and Greenland which has formed the Davis Strait. This strait connects the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay.
Scientists have identified a 19–24-kilometre-thick fragment of continental crust about 400km long in the ocean off the west coast of Greenland which has been dubbed the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent.
A study into the microcontinent’s formation is published in Gondwana Research.
The geologists created a reconstruction of the plate tectonic movements spanning roughly 30 million years which led to the proto-microcontinent’s formation.
Proto-microcontinents are defined by the authors as “related regions of relatively thick continental lithosphere separated from major continents by a zone of thinner continental lithosphere.” Lithosphere simply refers to the hard, rocky outer shell of our planet.
They rule out the formation being another feature on the crust, such as a continental ribbon.

Initial rifting between Canada and Greenland began about 118 million years ago. Seafloor spreading began about 61 million years ago, stopping roughly 33 million years ago to create the Davis Strait.
Between about 58 and 49 million years ago, the scientists say the seafloor spreading between Canada and Greenland shifted from northeast-southwest to north-south. This cleaved off the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent. This seafloor spreading stopped when Greenland collided with Ellesmere Island to the north.

The research can be used to understand how other microcontinents are formed around the world, including the Jan Mayen microcontinent northeast of Iceland, the East Tasman rise southeast of Tasmania and the Gulden Draak Knoll off the coast of Western Australia.
“Better knowledge of how these microcontinents form allows researchers to understand how plate tectonics operates on Earth, with useful implications for the mitigation of plate tectonic hazards and discovering new resources,” says co-author Dr Jordan Phethean from the University of Derby, UK in an article on Phys.org.
