I am so frustrated

I got up at 4 am.   All day I have been setting up posts and helping Ron make a grand TDay dinner.   But as I went out to help him, I came back to find my blogging computer had restarted.  No problem, as I have a setting that simply reloads the pages from the last 3 days.   But … No.  For some reason I can not explain everything I had done for the last 3 days was wiped out.  I can’t explain it.  If it happens again I will have to dump the computer.  But really I can not think of anything that could have caused it.   But I will try to resurrect the important anti trans post I was writing.   Hugs

  1. I’m sorry. My desktop is limping, again, as well. The kid says it’s so old, it’s time to replace. He says he appreciates that I don’t want to get rid of it because he built it himself, but that it’s time. I think I’m going to get an all-in-one for the desktop this time. I’ve scoped a decent HP model that is supposed to be able to handle what I do. But your situation is so much more complicated! I admire you for having the patience, Scottie.

    1. Hi Ali. You know your needs and situation. But I do not care for all in one units. I find they are more expensive than a segmented unit. But the worst thing I have with them is that if one part goes bad you have to replace the entire unit. If the screen goes instead of just getting a new screen you need a new computer. I look for expansion ability these days. The ability to add ram or add internal cards as needed. Such as adding a better graphics card or adding a feature that was not available when the computer was new. I found that I increased the entire ability of my oldest computer because I could go from 16 GB ram to 64 GB of ram, while my newer one is stuck running a hot processor able to do much less because it can not have more than the original 16 GB of ram added.

As for patience it is a bit easier for me because I understand the terminology and so it is easier for me to look stuff up and understand what to do to fix things. But I admit the technology is starting to get away from me. I struggle with it more than ever. Plus I am doing my best to keep my machines running at their best because I really don’t want to take the money to replace them. Best wishes on what ever you decide to buy and I know you will love it. Let me know how you do learning Windows 11 please. Hugs

  2. Well, ya know, I seem to have maybe changed my mind. I’d read about someone else learning Win 11, and I’m not anticipating that one bit. OTOH, the kid mentioned that all in ones have built in obsolescence, but thinks I could get between 5-10 years out of it, and that’ll pretty well finish me off, if I’m lucky. (The ten years, anyway. 5 years may not be so lucky!) But, today I’m thinking I’ve been using this Chromebook, which is old but not ancient, and it’s really working out for me with what I do. So now I wonder if I just want maybe a bigger one with More Power? Who knows.

    1. Hi Ali. Please don’t sell yourself short. You could live to be 120 years old and still be online fighting for everyone’s rights. But as for computers you don’t need the most powerful ones that do everything. Kamyk found a little laptop for himself in the hospital for under 400. It was not what I would recommend to you but it proves you can find a good computer for a decent price that will run for a long time. You can find a desktop for around 700 to 850 dollars that should do you great. For me and my needs that price is around 1,500 to 1,800 dollars so to replace both of mine gets pricey. One thing to add to your decision. Windows has announced that next year they are stopping all support for Windows 10. When they put out the statement they added that what people should do to prepare … buy new computers with Windows 11. No talk of making Windows 11 work on older computers like they did with Windows 10. So if security and support is important to you, then you must upgrade in the next year. Hugs

  3. Oh, Scottie, I only want until 75. I really don’t care about living past that age; there is no sense, even if I remain as healthy as I am right now. But most people in my family-my forbears, as it were, passed before 80. I’m good with that. The few who lived past 80 were not healthy, and unhappy. And if I end up being one of them, I’m not likely to be using the computer! 😀

I spoke with the kid about this after I wrote that. He agreed that probably a newer Chromebook may be my best choice, and told me about Win 10 and Win 11. He’s just finished certifying in all manner of things, has used Win 11, and dislikes it. But knows how to work it, anyway. It is the way of the world, he says. He really, really liked Win 7!

So did I. Of course, I liked Word Perfect, once upon a time when it existed.

    1. Hi Ali. Your son is correct IMO. I agree with liking Windows 7, I thought it was the best of all the windows. 10 mimics 7 in a lot of ways I think. I have not bought 11 because it won’t run on my computers, not the correct generation of I-7 chip. I do wonder if they have put a thing like they did with one of the Windows 8s that you could switch to a Windows 7 layout if you preferred. My big thing is privacy I figure if they want my data they should pay me for it. But I have several programs that will ensure that Microsoft won’t get too much data from me even if you can not shut it all down like you can on 10. It just irritates me that people have perfectly good computers that will not get operating system software security updates in a world of constant hackers / malware jerks. I have used 11 when fixing a few newer computers. Once I figured out how to navigate in it to the places I needed to go to I did not mind it that much. But I have never needed to use it full time. Have a great weekend. Hugs
