A Puerto Rican family, including a toddler, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Milwaukee after being overheard speaking Spanish; this incident is the latest in a surge of racial profiling concerns amid Trump’s immigration crackdown.
The family, all U.S. citizens, were transported to a detention center before officials acknowledged their mistake and issued an apology.
The mother, grandmother, and young child had been shopping when authorities approached and detained them. They were not allowed to clarify their status until they were already in custody, according to Telemundo Puerto Rico.
“My sister, in English, explained that not only are they American citizens, but that they are from Puerto Rico. They were born in Puerto Rico,” a family member told host Milly Méndez while remaining anonymous due to fears surrounding the situation.
Upon presenting official documents, the officials reportedly softened their stance. “I’m so sorry,” one officer said, according to the family’s account.Despite the apology, the family was allegedly left stranded and had to arrange their own transportation home.
Instagram users reacted to Méndez’s post with frustration.

“At what store? Why didn’t he give that information here? So you’re shopping with a Birth Certificate on top of it?!… What is that!” One user questioned.
Another expressed disappointment in the political climate, commenting, “Thank you… What a shame that the people keep voting for colors and not values… it’s going to get worse.”

The situation gained traction after journalist Adrian Carrasquillo discussed the case on X, writing, “Another PUERTO RICAN family detained, a man tells Telemundo his sister, mother-in-law, & a child were taken by ICE in Milwaukee & driven to [a] facility where his sister explained that they’re US CITIZENS. ICE response to this flagrant violation? ‘Sorry.'”
Attorneys nationwide are now speaking out to educate immigrants and Black Indigenous People of Color about their rights when confronted by ICE, including the right to remain silent, the right to legal representation, and the ability to refuse entry without a warrant. They also advise keeping documents secure and on hand.

I’m not surprised. A former executive of mine is Mexican, she emigrated legally to the US, married an American, now has an American passport. I told her to be careful.
Hi Brian. As well you should. It hurts me that this is what the country I was born in to 62 years ago and served two tours in the military to keep safe has become. We used to celebrate being a melting pot and even those white supremacist demanding closing all the borders love the food and ideas brought by the very people now they claim our destroying our country. It all comes down to political power. Whites in the US have long assumed this was their playground, and they were the unquestioned bosses over it all. Then over the last 40 years they were forced to watch as that authority over the playground waned. They were shocked to learn that soon the others in the playground would be the majority in charge and soon be making the rules. The whites have freaked out. This is the result for them to keep control of the playground. It is so sad because all the others wanted was to just play as the whites had done in the same playground. That is too scary for the maga white. DEI is evil. Diversity, equality, inclusion … oh how they fill that with all the scary things they can. But the future won’t be denied as these people race to the past to shore up their power. Your posts show the beauty of diversity and how grand inclusion can be. Hugs.

It comes down to what kind of people do we want to be. Those who shrink our world / country down into the narrow confines of the fundamentalist bible …. or and enlightened society moving forward into equality for all.
Sadly this country did what the European countries did centuries ago, and went through a mini of the enlightenment age. The backlash against that was the dark ages. The right wing wants to drive us from our current enlightenment back to the dark ages of the 1950s or 1850s. I am scared of how far we in the US will fall and try to drag the other enlightened countries down with us.
I blame that downfall on three groups. The racist bigoted haters which are the fundamentalist Christians wanting to force everyone to live according to their beliefs, the older traditionalist who can not accept the changes in societies, and the young people who are being bombarded by hate from foreign governments to cause chaos in our society or stop our country from moving forward into the enlightened wester world. Hi Barry. I am afraid you are correct. But I fear it will be even worse. They are picking off the migrants / brown people / people who speak Spanish now because it is easy low hanging fruit that makes the maga base orgasm. The fundamentalist Christian right is already well into the erasing trans people, next they will get the government to turn their attention to the rest of us LGBTQ+, us gays. Ron is worried that we will be targeted and our marriage called into question, He is demanding we get our passports which cost over $200 each, first for documentation we are married will it can be recorded in a government document, and then if we need to flee the US. He really is that scared. He wants us to buy guns. I am really trying to prevent that. I carried a gun for a living, my job required it, I am well trained in the use of them, and he used them in his early life, but I understand too well what happens when guns are used in fear. I don’t think we are at that point yet. Barry I think in two years, the midterm elections the democrats / left will win a log of congress seats back. If the republicans / red states don’t make the voting of the people impossible as many red states are trying to do. Those states want only want white republicans voting and use the laws to try to keep others from voting. But if the people including those republicans who voted for tRump based on the cost of living which is going to get worse under him do vote it looks good already only this short time tRump has been in office that democrats will win a lot of the seats in congress. That will stop almost everything tRump and his people want to do. But time will tell.
No matter what the US will be changed for the worst for many decades or longer. The right will enshrine ideologues in the courts and embolden the haters and bigots. All that will have to be undone. Plus the damage to the US reputation in the world will be trashed and take decades to rebuild. Why should any country trust us when our government shifts so quickly revoking or ignoring agreements made in good faith only 4 years or more ago. Intel agencies worldwide stopped sharing critical most sensitive intel with the US because tRump was known to give that intel to Putin / Russia. They will stop again. But will they return to sharing that sensitive intel knowing that the US could elect another president that won’t honor conventional agreements, that will be as stupid or ideologue as tRump loving other dictator governments? Less than half the people in the US who could vote did. Slightly more people this time voted for tRump knowing what he was because they refused to vote for a black woman who wouldn’t promise to destroy Israel. Bigotry, racism, and misogyny destroyed the US for decades. Hugs
