The Florida Phoenix reports:

Emboldened by the mainstreaming of hard-right politics ahead of a presidential election cycle, white nationalist and anti-LGBTQ+ groups increased to record levels in the United States last year, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center’s latest annual report on hate and extremism. The SPLC, which has published the annual report since 1990, documented 835 active anti-government groups, up 133 from 2022’s count, and 595 hate groups, an increase of 72 over the previous year’s figure.

Accounting for a large portion of the increase was a 50% surge in white supremacy hate groups in 2023, the highest jump ever recorded by the SPLC, growing to 165 over 109 in 2022. White power and neo-Nazi rallies across the U.S. totaled 143 in 2023, down from 191 in 2022. SPLC saw a 33% rise in anti-LGBTQ+ organizations over last year, bringing the total to 86. The group said the growth was largely attributable to the anti-trans movement on the far-right.

NPR reports:

A Wichita pastor recently encouraged members of his church to mark Pride Month by checking out mass amounts of gay- and transgender-themed books from their local library. “One way you can love your neighbors and your community is to gather together some of the men in your church and go empty the local library of all their LGBTQ+ books,” pastor Kyle Lammott [screenshot] wrote in a recent post on Instagram. “Start with the kids’ books and work your way up.”

The post featured a photo of more than 100 books checked out of the Andover Public Library. The titles include dozens of young adult novels with LGBTQ characters or themes, books about the Black Lives Matter movement and an autobiography of tennis star Billie Jean King. Lammott, lead pastor of Exodus Church in east Wichita, declined an interview and did not say whether he plans to return the materials.

As a young gayling I ‘forgot’ to check out a copy of ‘The Front Runner’ from my local library. I sneaked it out in a stack of textbooks. I devoured it in two days and then rode my bicycle back to the library on a Sunday to put it in the book drop, so terrified was I that someone might see me. But that book opened worlds for me.

I’m an old curmudgeon now, these bible-thumping hypocrites have no power over me, but it breaks my heart to think how what they’re doing affects young queer people.

Portland, Oregon’s CBS affiliate reports:

A juvenile suspect has been arrested in connection to an incident at the Newberg Public Library in which a window that displayed an LGBTQIA+ Pride flag was shattered by a BB gun.

According to the Newberg-Dundee Police Department in a post on Facebook, police were originally dispatched to investigate the incident on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. No one was injured and it was initially investigated as a vandalism complaint.

It’s unclear what charges may brought to the juvenile, including whether or not they may include bias crime charges. However, police said the case is being “referred to the Yamhill County Juvenile Department for prosecution.

Tampa’s WMNF reports:

Several Tampa Bay area cities have raised the LGBTQ Pride flags over city buildings this weekend. But that would have been illegal if a bill that died in this year’s Florida Legislature had instead become law.

On Saturday morning the city of Gulfport in south Pinellas County raised the Pride flag over its public library. It came after a short ceremony of speeches honoring the city’s commitment to equality and before a day-long block party celebration of Pride.

The nearby City of St. Petersburg raised its LGBTQ Pride flag over City Hall on Friday. Meanwhile, the City of Clearwater will host Pride events but will not fly the Pride flag at a city building.

The Republican bill to ban Pride flags at government buildings passed earlier this year in the Florida House, but died when the state Senate ran out of time to vote on the issue before the session ended for the year.

Of note, an amendment to the Senate version of the bill would have allowed the Confederate flag, something its sponsor later claimed was as “error.”

Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chair and daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, dodged answering whether the RNC will support Maryland Republican Larry Hogan’s run for Senate after Hogan called for Americans to respect the verdict.

“I don’t support what he just said there. I think it’s ridiculous,” Lara Trump said when asked by CNN’s Kasie Hunt if the RNC will support Hogan on “State of the Union” Sunday morning.

“I think anybody who’s not speaking up in the face of really something that should never again have seen the light of day, a trial that would never have been brought against any other person aside from Donald Trump, doesn’t deserve the respect of anyone,” Lara Trump added.

Training materials produced by the Florida Department of Education direct middle and high school teachers to indoctrinate students in the tenets of Christian nationalism, a right-wing effort to merge Christian and American identities. Thousands of Florida teachers, lured by cash stipends, have attended trainings featuring these materials.

According to speaker notes accompanying one slide, teachers were told that “Christianity challenged the notion that religion should be subservient to the goals of the state,” and the same hierarchy is reflected in America’s founding documents. That slide quotes the Bible to assert that “[c]ivil government must be respected, but the state is not God.” Teachers were told the same principle is embedded in the Declaration of Independence.

The next slide in the deck quotes an article by Peter Lillback, the president of Westminster Theological Seminary and the founder of The Providence Forum, an organization that promotes and defends Christian nationalism. The group’s executive director, Jerry Newcombe, writes a weekly column for World Net Daily — a far-right site known for publishing hundreds of stories falsely suggesting Obama was a Muslim born in Africa.

I’m reminded of Dumb Idiot Ken Ham bemoaning facing an unfounded future scenario where children are being taken away from their parents to be indoctrinated into some so called secular evolutionary ideology, which is a way for him to project his own plans to tear children away from the arms of their secular parents and be taken to creation indoctrination centers to be indoctrinated into a toxic creationist ideology of his own making.

At first I thought it was his fragile ego preventing him from admitting how low his crowd but then someone pointed out that one of the taking points of why tRump had to have won the 2020 election was he had much bigger crowds than Biden.   Yes these people think crowd sizes at rallies means you win the most votes.  They are setting the stage to do violence and try to take over the government when tRump loses the 2024 election.   Hugs.  Scottie

However, a local New York evening news report from ABC7’s Jim Dolan revealed a different story about how many people attended and who actually made up the crowd. B-roll of the event shown to viewers during Dolan’s report painted a remarkably different picture than what Trump boasted about regarding crowd size.

So, my feeling is that what this is about, besides soothing Trump’s ego, is to build the narrative that there is significant support for Trump in the area. Then, when he loses the election, it fuels the “stolen” story. “How could he have only gotten 3000 votes in the Bronx? 25000 showed up for his rally!!”

This kind of nonsense seems petty, but it’s not. Push back at it.

More generally, it reinforces the idea that evidence can’t be used to support a proposal. The only thing that matters is the politics/theology/status of the person making the point.

Yep, that’s fairly accurate. And, I’ve noticed that Trump does seem to exaggerate his crowd sizes by a factor of 10 fairly consistently.
