On the first day of the Republican National Convention, prominent Republicans used their national platform to target transgender people. This signals that the party is not abandoning its efforts to curtail transgender and LGBTQ+ rights if they gain power in the next election. This comes after the vice presidential running mate pick of JD Vance, the lead author ofย a Senate billย that would institute a national ban on transgender youth care and bar all medical schools from teaching about transgender care, including adult trans care.
The most prominent figure to use her platform to attack transgender people was Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene criticized Transgender Day of Visibility for falling on the same day as Easter Sunday in 2024. Notably, Easter Sunday is a moving holiday, while Transgender Day of Visibility has always been held on March 31. There have been more Transgender Days of Visibility on that date than Easter Sundays since America was founded.
โThey promised normalcy and gave us Transgender Visibility Day on Easter Sunday,โ Greene said to raucous boos. โAnd let me state this clearly: There are only two genders, and we are made in Godโs image,โ she continued.

Many on X (formerly Twitter) questioned the statement and its implications for the nature of God’s gender. Vinny Thomas, a user on the platform,ย pointed out, โโThere are only two genders and we are made in Godโs imageโ is so fascinating because what exactly are you saying about Godโs gender?โ
Representative John James from Michigan also joined in, using some of his time to target transgender women in sports and changing rooms. โOur daughters were sold on hope, and now they are being forced onto the playing fields and into the changing rooms of biological males. America was sold on hope, and now the world is on fire,โ Rep. James continued.
Senator Ron Johnson joined in with his speech, calling LGBTQ+ inclusive education, sports participation, and inclusion โsexual indoctrination,โ and stating that it was an attack on American values. โThis fringe agenda includes biological males competing against girls and the sexualization and indoctrination of our children,โ he said to boos. He continued, โTodayโs Democrat agenda, their policies, are a clear and present danger to our institutions, our values, and our people.โ

One of the “everyday Americans” chosen to speak at the Republican National Convention, Linda Fornos, was the last to target transgender people. In a speech that fell rather flat with little reaction, she questioned children learning pronouns in schools. Many correctly pointed out that pronouns have always been part of an English education.

The willingness to lean into anti-LGBTQ+ policies on the first day of the Republican National Convention may seem puzzling. Attacks on LGBTQ+ people have faltered in 2024 compared with 2023, with far fewer laws passing. Several states that had targeted trans people in previous years, such asย Florida,ย Georgia,ย West Virginia, andย Kansas, failed to pass anti-LGBTQ+ policies this year, despite over 80 bills proposed in those states targeting the community. In many elections where anti-trans policies were a major issue, the Republican Party suffered setbacks:ย 70% of Moms for Libertyย and Project 1776 candidates lost their races in 2023. Other losses Republicans have suffered on this issue occurred in theย Virginia legislature elections, theย Arizona Governorโs race, theย Michigan legislature elections, theย Wisconsin Supreme Court election, theย Walker-Warnock Senate race, and in dozens more places. Furthermore, recent polling fromย Gallup,ย Navigator, and theย LA Timesย indicates fading public support for such laws, with huge majorities of respondents seeing them as a distraction and opposing bans on trans youth care.
Still, Trumpโs selection of Senator JD Vance as his running mate indicates that he and the Republican Party have not backed off from this issue. Vance notably was the primary sponsor of aย Senate billย to bar all trans care for trans youth nationwide. His bill would also bar secondary educational institutions, including medical schools, from teaching gender-affirming care for any age. Trump himselfย has called forย investigations of hormone therapy manufacturers, bans on LGBTQ+ inclusive policies in schools, and targeting transgender people โat any age.โ
As the Republican National Convention unfolds, the stage is set for a parade of speakers with deep-rooted anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ records. For LGBTQ+ people, these are not just rhetorical threats but a potential harbinger of laws that could be passed over the next four years. LGBTQ+ people will therefore likely be especially tuned in over the remaining nights.

On Tuesday Night, the Teamsters Union posted a tweet criticizing President Sean O’Brien over anti-trans article endorsement. This comes after O’Brien spoke at the RNC, a first for the union.

On Monday evening, Teamsters President Sean OโBrien made history byย speaking at the Republican National Conventionโthe first time a Teamsters Union President has ever done so. The move, however, didnโt come without controversy. Union Vice President John Palmerย calledย the decision โunconscionable.โ
OโBrien then stirred more debate byย tweeting in supportย of anย articleย by Republican Senator Josh Hawley, which criticized corporate initiatives supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and transgender workers. The situation then erupted when the official Teamsters Twitter accountย posted a statementย condemning OโBrienโs endorsement, which was swiftly deleted.
โUnions gain nothing from endorsing the racist, misogynistic, and anti-trans politics of the far right, no matter how much people like Sen. Hawley attempt to tether such bigotry to a cynical pro-labor message. The message this sends to Teamsters of color, Teamster women, and LGBTQ Teamsters is that they are not welcome in the union unless they surrender their identity to a new kind of anti-woke unionism. You don’t unite a diverse working class by scoffing at its diversity,โ said the now deleted tweet.
OโBrienโs support for Hawleyโs views received swift backlash. โWe get it. He promised you Secretary of Labor,โ read a response by transgender writerย Parker Molloy.
โIf you’re a Teamster of color, are LGBTQ+, Sean O’Brien has just said he doesn’t give a fuck about you,โ said theย Daily Union Electionsย account.
โScab,โ said American journalist and labor activistย Talia Jane.
OโBrienโs speech at the RNC puzzled many observers. He used the platform to advocate for unions while also praising Donald Trump, calling him โone tough SOB.โ Throughout much of the speech, the applause was tepid to nonexistent. Reports even indicated that at leastย one audience memberย shouted โright to work,โ reflecting anti-union sentiments in the Republican Party.
Meanwhile, other labor union leaders were critical of OโBrienโs appearance at the RNC. Liz Shuler, president of the AFL-CIO,ย responded, โDonald Trump and J.D. Vance are on the bossesโ sideโฆ We wonโt be fooled.โ These critiques were echoed by members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, and other union leaders.
Even John Palmer, the Teamsters Vice President,ย weighed in: โA speaking engagement at the Republican National Convention by Teamsters President Sean OโBrien, regardless of the message, only normalizes and makes the most anti-union party and president Iโve seen in my lifetime seem palatable.โ
OโBrienโs support for a senatorโs explicitly anti-diversity and anti-LGBTQ+ viewsย runs contraryย to Teamsters Unionโs official documents and policies. One document on the Teamsters website states, โWe are pro-union and pro-equality. In keeping with the labor movement motto, โan injury to one is an injury to all,โ we support a strong and progressive labor movement that promotes full equality and respect for LGBTQ workers and their families.โ
The Teamsters presidentโs participation and apparent endorsement of anti-trans and anti-queer politics from the Republican Party could signal a profound betrayal to LGBTQ+ workers, who depend on union protections for their safety and rights. As the Teamsters Union remains silent on its presidential endorsement, the stakes have never been higher for those workers impacted by Republican policies. LGBTQ+ union members are left with the question of whether or not their rights will be bartered away for political favor with a party that has repeatedly positioned itself against their very existence.

Humanitarian groups are considering a mass vaccination campaign for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip after traces of variant poliovirus type 2 were found in water sources in the war-torn territory. The disease was detected in six locations in Gaza, the World Health Organization said.
Geneva-based WHO said it was working with partners โ including UNICEF and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) โ to conduct a risk assessment. Polio vaccination rates in Gaza before the war were โoptimal,โ according to the organization.
Israel on Sunday confirmed the resurgence of the virus, which can be spread by contaminated water and direct person-to-person contact, and said it would offer booster shots to its soldiers operating in and around the Gaza Strip.

Hi, welcome to Essence of Thought with me, Ethel Thurston, as your host.
Today’s video explores the Cold War’s impact on the West, namely how the Red Scare laid down the groundwork for the modern anti-trans panic in sports. From the media’s open misogyny to literally cartoonish fearmongering, there’s a lot to unpack.

This is a repeat of history.ย 1930s German with an authoritarian leader with a compliant congress with a plan to take over the government functions to end rights and liberty for some people while making others a superior race.ย Damn it people wake up.ย We have seen this movie before.ย The fascist are the bad guys.ย We had to stop them then, we have to stop them now.ย They did not have permits yet they marched and paraded anyway.ย They vandalized public property, costing taxpayer money to repair.ย ย They threatened people, rule by violence, by gang thugs, brownshirts, tRump soldiers.ย ย Hugs.ย Scottie
For the second time in just nearly as many weeks, a hate group stationed themselves in downtown Nashville and passed out flyers against those who were Jewish and in the LGBTQ community.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) โ For the second time in just nearly as many weeks, a hate group stationed themselves in downtown Nashville and passed out flyers against those who were Jewish and in the LGBTQ community.
The group kept passing out flyers that labeled Jewish people as pedophiles and screaming that those who are LGBTQ needed to “get the fโk home.” Their shirts read “pro white” on the front. On the back of the shirt, it read “whites against replacement.” They stood alongside a Nazi flag and a sign that said Let’s Go Brandon, a moniker against President Joe Biden.
“Joe Biden’s cabinet is 80% Jewish,” one of the group told our camera crew.
ย
Men in the group were raising their arms in the same salute as Nazi soldiers did to Adolf Hitler during his fascist rise of power in the 1930s and 1940s.
“The Holocaust never happened,” they told our camera crew.

A man holds a flyer in the face of another while a hate group stood at Third and Broadway in Nashville, Tenn., on July 14, 2024.
Those at Third and Broadway identified themselves as the Goyim Defense League, and they are defined as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are a group that primarily lends their hate to the Jewish community, though the group on Broadway was screaming about the Jewish, LGBTQ and the Black community.
“It’s time for white people to stand up for themselves,” the group told pedestrians walking by.
We captured a woman who was gay screaming at the group for being out there in front of her child. They screamed at her that she shouldn’t have any children.
“My daughter is scared of you!” the woman screamed, who said she had just come out of a restaurant.
Metro Nashville police officers were near the group on Lower Broadway.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville posted on Sunday about hate groups continuing to hand out flyers that show hatred against Jewish people, including Saturday night in Nashville.
“The Jewish Federation of Greater Nashville is disgusted that once again our beloved city has been sullied by antisemitic instigators,” Jewish leaders said in a statement. “Last night, a group of roughly 15 Jew-haters handed out antisemitic literature in downtown while spewing loathsome rhetoric. We condemn this activity in the strongest possible way and denounce the perpetrators. Antisemitism โ the irrational hatred of Jews โ continues to escalate here in Middle Tennessee and around the country (and world). We are in constant contact with local law enforcement and thank them for their hard work and partnership in ensuring that the hateful words being espoused do not turn into violent actions against our community members or institutions.”
Previous hate groups in Nashville
The hate group the Patriot Front didn’t have a permit to march in the city, but they did so anyway last weekend.
The group went through the streets of downtown Nashville a “Reclaim America” banner, American flags, a Confederate flag and passing out flyers while chanting on their way to the front of the Capitol. Some also held red, white, and blue shields.
They also spray-painted their logo under the Woodland Street Bridge, which is vandalism.
In February, the group defaced the retaining wall in Brentwood on the side of Interstate 65. The Tennessee Department of Transportation had to paint over it.
Other racist flyers were passed out in downtown in February.
On Sunday, once again, a hate group put on a demonstration in downtown Nashville. This time, it was the neo-Nazi โGoyim Defense League,โ shouting โHitler was right!โ and other vile words! 1/ pic.twitter.com/CcP59f7mIk
