Transgender did not kill feminism.

Brought to you by the same idea that atheists are killing Christmas, gays are destroying the country, same sex marriage is killing opposite sex marriages,  Lesbians are killing feminism, feminism is destroying traditional women’s roles, and so on.   This is simply the traditionalist refusing to accept new ideas and understandings.    Why can’t it stay the way it was, even though when our idea was new some people fought against it also with these same words.  I have never found a feminist against transgender who can deny this or answer why their using the same words against others that were used against them is not wrong.    Accept that things change with growth and enlightenment causing greater understanding.     Scottie

Barely out of Christmas and back to the stupid.   Everything is projection with the right.   Toss out RW tropes until something sticks. It never does. Factually, the GOP is the group on the road to extinction and they know it, which is why they are pulling out all the stops to try and maintain their dwindling hold on power through gerrymandering, disenfranchisement, and praying the judges the last occupant put in help them.

The right elects a fascist dictator wannabe, pampers the wealthy with tax cuts, screws the blue collar worker over time and again (and somehow gets them to thank them for it), inspires an insurrection, destroys democracy daily, and is so close to party-fracture that you need white supremacists and Nazis to survive and you think the left is near extinction?

The right hasn’t won a majority of votes in a presidential election in the 21st century.

Straight people often more sexually fluid than they think, study suggests

A study has found that straight people’s perceptions of their own sexualities can become more fluid when they are exposed to different theories of sexuality.

The study, published in Scientific Reports, was initially conducted on 180 university students, all of whom identified as straight.

Researchers showed participants an article which found that most people experience attraction to both men and women at some level. Evidence was included from multiple studies, including one which measured genital blood flow and pupil dilation among people watching erotic videos of men and women.

A separate control group of participants was presented with a different article on climate change

Among the group presented with evidence that sexuality is a spectrum and can change over time, fewer participants reported themselves as entirely heterosexual.

They also reported being less sure of their heterosexuality and more likely to engage in same-sex encounters in future.

This trend was less noticeable among participants who identified as politically conservative.

Following their findings, the group of researchers conducted a second experiment. This involved a larger pool of participants, with 460 people from varied walks of life. This latter experiment involved showing participants either the article about sexuality being a continuum, a control article, or an article which reported on sexuality as ‘fluid’, with the capacity to change over a lifetime.

After reading their respective information sheets, under 10 per cent of controls claimed to be non-exclusively straight. Of the group who read about sexuality being a continuum, 36 per cent answered as such, as well as 20.7 per cent of those in the fluid sexuality group.

Just over 41 per cent of those who read about the continuous nature of sexuality also reported being uncertain about their heterosexuality, along with 34.8 per cent of participants who read about the fluid nature of sexuality, and 19.6 per cent of controls.

Unlike its predecessor, the second experiment didn’t find that political alignment had any bearing on participants’ answers at the end of the experiment. However, although those who had read on sexuality as a continuum reported being more open to same0sex experiences in future, the same was not true of those who read on sexuality’s fluidity.

“Did we change people’s sexual orientation via our interventions? Surely not,” said lead study author Dr James Morandini in a statement.

“I think our study may have changed how people interpreted their underlying sexual feelings. This means two people with identical sexual orientations could describe their sexual orientation quite differently, depending on whether they have been exposed to fluid or continuous ways of understanding sexuality.”

I am not only interested in studies on sexuality and gender, but in videos that explain these subjects in easy to understand language.   Their value for young people is well understood.  So many kids have the “Am I normal” “should I have these feelings” questions and need information not only about feelings but physical stuff also.   Here is the really interesting part, young adults need the information also.    I have known guys who had no clue well into their 20’s.

I have always been open about being gay, even to a more limited extent when in the military.   This was in the 1980’s.  I did a lot of dating.    There were a lot of honest questions, and I will tell you the above study is true, people are far more fluid than they understand.   And they had questions.    When we moved here we were the first openly out gay couple.   There were gay people here of course but we were the ones that were clear we were gay and together.  No need for rumor, we did not hide it.  This was 2004.   Turned out people were curious and would start out hesitantly asking questions that I would answer until they got to the real question they wanted to ask.   I never took offence, why would I, and the conversations often start with “Uhm, I have no one else to ask …”  or “You are the only gay people I know …”   Which I knew was not true but remember this was a 50 year old and older park filled with a lot or retired folk or close too it, so I was the youngest here because my disability made it so those rules did not apply.   There were all these adults who were either curious or had just learned their grandkids were …  that way …  A lot of debunking myths and explaining all of which I did not mind.   The internet has cut a lot of that down I admit, but there is still some questions.   Scottie

Workers / the people / the public are the real economic engine.   The real economy is not the stock market or the wealthy, it is the flow of money.  Money only flows when people have it to spend and to buy.     That gives others the need to produce and sell.   The US has been made to accept the myth that the best things happen when all the money is concentrated in the hands of a few very wealthy people.   Ever wonder who is behind that lie and why?    Scottie

It is a choice by the unvaxed but it is not a choice on the part of their victims they pass the coronavirus to.   If you want to go to parties get vaccinated.   This is an attempt to have your cake and eat it also.   The unvaxers want the same benefits of having the vaccine without getting it.   Really selfish I think.

Michael Ramirez Comic Strip for December 23, 2021

Incorrect and misleading framing.   It is not free stuff.   It is getting a return for your tax money.   It is a myth that the wealthy push that for some reason they are entitled to taxpayers money by the government serving their wants and needs, but lower incomes are lazy wanting free stuff they don’t deserve to have the government use taxpayer money to work for the public.   Every time the Republicans want to give a tax cut they claim it is our money, it is better in your pocket than the governments.   When it comes to getting anything for the money we are taxed the Republicans scream it is a moral failing of wanting free stuff.    Don’t buy it.   The funny thing is you would think that US taxes would be very low or non-existant since the country doesn’t provide for education and healthcare, but they’re quite high actually, and with none of the benefits.  Scottie

Mats Dahlgren Premium Member about 9 hours ago

Here is some fun facts about Sweden, Michael. We have both the above named wishes (but we do not live with the delusion you so happily slap on it – that it is free) and it works. We even reduced our national debt year by year up until the pandemic. This is mainly true for all Scandinavian countries so why do you keep trying to sell the image of tax financed education and health care as not possible to be successful? Merry Christmas to You and everyone on this forum /Mats

OldCoal  about 2 hours ago

He does it because Ramirez, and all his ilk, fear that workers who actually have mandated vacations and retirement and medical care with low cost or free training for new jobs, will actually feel free and move around to the BEST jobs.

Just a clue, save on the very lowest rungs of the wage ladder, people in the USA usually check out the benefits package before they check out wages.

Meaningful medical care is NOT a given. Most companies now provide several “options”, and if you take the cheapest you’ve got no medical at all as far as “usual” medical care goes.

Paid vacation when you want to take it is NOT a given. Carryover of unused vacation time is NOT a given. Being paid for time not used is NOT a given. Vacation over two weeks in a year is a monster benefit.

Actual job retraining paid for by the company and done on company time is absolutely not a given, and nearly nonexistent.

Company pensions are a thing of the past, it’s all about “matching funds in 401K’s” – often just a means to force employees to buy company stock.

Company contributions are VASTLY important, you may pay half the cost of medical insurance, you may pay 2/3, you may pay it all. Same goes for anything and everything.

My “contribution” for my “benefits package” sucks up about a thousand bucks a month. Maybe a bit more. I hate to look at it, because it makes me mad every time.

If anyone over there is wondering why American workers all sound disgruntled, copy this and send it to them. Doubtless the trolls will be whining, they won’t manage to claim any of it is not accurate, but they’ll whine. It’s what trolls do.

Oh, and please take note that I’m talking about what Americans laughingly call “high quality jobs”. Many jobs in the USA come with a caveat called “32 hours” meaning you work for 32 hours a week and get no benefits at all. None. Nothing. The law doesn’t require it so you get nothing whatsoever.

Henry Payne Comic Strip for December 23, 2021

Fauci said that Omicron is spreading much faster but appears to be less virulent than Delta, and exhibits more of a degree of immune escape necessitating a booster. All of which is accurate, none of which is in the least apocalyptic.

Two years into the coronavirus pandemic, the American right is still consumed with hatred for White House adviser Anthony S. Fauci. So much so that not only do they scheme to destroy Fauci, the longtime head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, but their obsession sometimes devolves into violent fantasies.

You might find the right’s venom for Fauci to be inexplicable. He’s not some kind of partisan going around telling people to vote for Democrats. What did he do to make them so angry? He did what any public health official would have done, which is to explain what we know and don’t know about the virus and encourage people to take precautions.

If liberals loved him, that meant conservatives had to hate him. At this moment the Republican Party’s policy agenda is a desiccated husk to which no one in their party pays more than the most perfunctory attention. What animates them is hatred of the left and the ongoing, endlessly renewable need to Own the Libs. Bashing Fauci became one more way to accomplish that goal.

The second source of rage at Fauci is that conservative media needed a villain for the pandemic story. And not just a villain, but a domestic villain, a target for all the loathing they could muster in order to turn the pandemic into another weapon in the endless war against liberals and liberalism.

Here are some points that came to me about these smash and grab thefts.   Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk each make more money off the Trump tax breaks than all the smash and grab robbers put together made last year. And the Sessions-Barr DOJ tried to give more to the despicable Sacklers.   While Republicans seek to smash democracy and protect the ultra-rich who are grabbing ever-greater wealth.   Republicans sing in harmony, “The election was stolen from us!” Just because the majority did not vote for them.

So Kelley is saying that a few incidents of Smash and Grab by gang bangers in California is worse than Billions in subsidies and Trillions in tax breaks gifted to the oligarchs and mega corporations?   Oh that’s right. They are the trickle-down “makers” that (only coincidentally) just happen to be Republican donors. That robbery is just fine.     Those at the bottom are wanting the same entitlements that those at the top have enjoyed for years.. unfortunately they can only afford hammers and don’t have access to lobbyists.    Smash and grab is old as the hills. Seriously? THAT’s what Ramirez is complaining about? That Biden/Harris didn’t predict these particular mutations? SERIOUSLY??

Omicron was the 15th documented variant and the 8th variant of concern. The people who understand virology saw it coming. Many of the scientists warned of another COVID December this last summer.   If Ramirez isn’t smart enough to understand that the Biden Administration was saying they couldn’t conceive that Americans could still be this ignorant after 2 years of COVID, that there would still be unvaccinated, that people would still refuse to wear a mask, and they would still resist social distancing. Americans have been proving their stupidity every day since Trump was elected and solidifying it since COVID.   Time to cull the herd: let the unvaccinated, Q-anon reading, MAGA shitheads rot in their private tents outside of the hospitals. No Manchin is voting his wallet and his bigotry.   Poor people can not have money.  It is part of the mind set of right wing people of his age.   Remember Grassley said it was wrong for the government to help poor people because they would only spend the money on movies, women, and booze.   Manchin says poor people if given child care money will spend it on drugs.   But they don’t care what the rich people do with the kick backs and subsides from the government because they are special, after all they are wealthy.

Trends in California’s violent crime rate since 2000 broadly mirror trends in the nationwide rate. However, the state saw greater declines in the first decade of 2000, and in 2020 the state saw a drop in violent crime while the nation overall experienced an increase of about 5%. Today, while the state’s violent crime rate is still above the national rate, the gap has dropped by half, from about 20% higher in California to 10% higher. Both California’s and the nation’s violent crime rates are now roughly where they were a decade ago.

It really costs “nothing”. Did Trump’s wall cost anything? GOP says “No”! Did Trump’s tax cut for the wealthy cost anything? GOP says “No”! Did Trump’s complete redesign of Mar A Largo cost anything? GOP, again, says “NO”. Well, there you are. Did Biden’s new pencil cup cost anything? GOP cries “YES”!

That score is fictional. It’s the assessment of what would happen if everything in the bill were made permanent. It’s the same score that was given to the Republican tax cuts IF all of the tax cuts were made permanent. That’s why the GOP made the tax cuts to the bottom 99% phase out starting in 2023. The tax cuts to the top 1% are permanent and it only added $2 trillion to the deficit. Facts matter.    It’s the time-honored tactic of “republicans”. Lie about an issue over and over again until enough people believe your lie.

• Joe Biden said “nobody’s going to build another coal-fired plant in America” during the first presidential debate.

• He said under the Obama administration, he brought the cost of renewable energy down to “cheaper than or as cheap as” coal, gas and oil, and his energy plan states that “marketplace competition has continued to shift this country away from coal-fired electricity.”

• His climate action plan does not include a ban on coal.     Biden’s climate plan acknowledges existing coal plants as part of the country’s energy portfolio.

Assange is being charged with espionage and computer hacking, not sedition. As you pointed out, he is not an American citizen and so a sedition charge would be nonsense.

The new set of counts immediately raised alarms among press freedom advocates, who argue that charging Assange with violations of the Espionage Act could set a dangerous precedent for journalists.   Assange was charged with 17 new criminal counts: One count of conspiracy to receive national defense information, three counts of obtaining national defense information and 13 counts of disclosure of national defense information.

The U.S. has never successfully prosecuted a non-government official for publishing or sharing unlawfully leaked classified information, University of Chicago Law Professor Geoffrey Stone told NBC News.   Some press freedom groups and other people and entities defending Assange were quick to protest the new charges.   “This strikes at the heart of the First Amendment and puts all journalists in extreme danger,” The Freedom of the Press Foundation said in a tweet Thursday afternoon.

Goldman Sachs trimmed its quarterly GDP forecasts for 2022, after U.S. Senator Joe Manchin withdrew his support to U.S. President Joe Biden’s $1.75 trillion domestic investment bill. The fact is the BBB would have added to the economy, added more jobs, increased money flow in the public, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, added needed internet capacity to areas where it is deficient, and so much more. The BBB was paid for and wouldn’t add to the debt. The BBB is good for the people and the country, but it was killed by greed and bigotry.

Baldo Comic Strip for December 20, 2021

I posted it here because there was a time in our life when Ron and I had to figure a tip into if we could afford to go out to eat.   During those lean years we would order something on the lower cost side of the menu because we need to save the extra for the tip.   The US system is stupid.  I have eaten in Canada and in Germany and in some few restaurants in the US where tipping is not only not required but actively discouraged.   The wait staff get their pay through their paycheck, not the generosity of the patrons.  That is how it should be.  But what we understand is that the US is not ready to accept workers as equal partners in the corporate scheme of profit making.    Yet during Covid we have found that with out workers being willing to risk themselves to do the work, the wealthy job creators couldn’t make the profit.  Why if they were so powerful and great couldn’t they do it with out the lowly workers?   Because it is a falsehood and myth that the wealthy and the large corporations make the world work, it is the workers that give them the profits that make them wealthy.   Hugs

Michael Ramirez Comic Strip for December 20, 2021

Manchin is a conservative running as a Democrat. He’s an asshole who taught his kid to hike prices ten-fold on desperately needed pharmaceutical products. He’s a friend to big business. He’s a friend to the top-1%. He has a vested interest in keeping his constituents poor and ignorant. Manchin is true to who he is.   Because investing in the country is far more “reckless” than flushing trillions down the toilet in an unwinnable foreign war.   I know it doesn’t include a $2 trillion tax cut with no reduction in spending that he had no problems with a couple years ago…or a couple of not budgeted wars from the party of “fiscal responsibility” that I also don’t remember a lot of complaints about.   Apparently Manchin went back on his word just like his republigoon thug masters and sycophants and apologists tend to do.   He doesn’t care. Mitch McConnell said it’s bad, so he doesn’t need to know anything else.   Anyone what to bet that if a Republican gets elected next time, and asks congress for a huge amount that everyone knows will bust both the budget and debt; that both the Senate and House will roll over and give the President whatever they ask for? And that Joe Manchin will be breaking his neck to sign the bill first?

Al Goodwyn Editorial Cartoons Comic Strip for December 20, 2021

It’s not inflationary. That is already happening without the BBB. Try again.  “Goldman Sachs has cut its U.S. growth forecast again, citing Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s assertion that he won’t back President Joe Biden’s key $2 trillion spending bill.”Dow down 500+.   That is the important point.   Every measure said it would improve the US economy and would lower inflation while boosting the US production via infrastructure improvements.   But the Republicans don’t want that as they want to be able to blame Biden for the lack of benefits to the people, again caused by Republicans.   Manchin according to reporting feels lower incomes, workers, and the poor are lazy louts who deserve nothing and if the government helps them, if the government lifts them out of poverty then they not only wont work but will use the money instead of for food and housing for their children to taking drugs and boozing.   It is the old Reagan era bull shit where the wealthy are somehow better than the poor, the wealthy are more moral, better and more deserving.   Yet it is a fantasy created by the wealthy.    It is like saying that every religious person is better and more moral that a non-religious person.   The fact is meritocracy is a myth, the US is not a place where if you just work hard you can be a millionaire.  But what pisses me off is that the Republicans and the right wing media want the US to fail and people to be hurt or political gain.

Sen. Manchin finds himself in the catbird seat, which makes him seem like the Dem Czar. He’s hated by his Dem colleagues, adored by the Repubs, though they can’t wait to replace him with one of their own, but supported by big coal in his home state of W. Virginia. And oddly enough, almost everything about BBB would greatly benefit his state as does the infrastructure bill, which he worked against. So, now, he has become the deal maker that Dump could’ve only dreamed of being.

Bottom line, there is inflation, but it’s inflation because of the lowest unemployment in years and an economy on the move. Republicans and their ministers of propaganda on Faux will, of course, blame Democrats. It’s all they have since they don’t have any answers themselves. I believe a majority of people will understand this if you explain it to them.   Manchin said he would not vote for the Bill because he couldn’t explain it to his constituents. I wonder if he can explain his huge houses, house-boat, and all his coal company stocks to his constituents more easily?   Hugs

NOT ABOUT THE BOOKS.

ICYMI, book banning is now being pushed by county officials in Texas. This week Williamson County commissioners withheld CARES funds from @LeanderISD & @RoundRockISD based on false allegations about "X-rated" material available. More thoughts & links ahead in thread.

Good start coverage from @mikemarut of @KVUE here, but we need to put a finer point on these issues and get eyes on the situation. Because as with Abbott and Mike Kraus's claims–this is politically motivated & NOT ABOUT THE BOOKS.

https://www.kvue.com/video/news/education/parents-concern-williamson-co-withholds-federal-funds-book-controversy/269-1c564e1d-cf7b-4d31-a6aa-1dba5b92813c?jwsource=cl

How do I know? Because districts that DID receive funds–like @GeorgetownISD–also have targeted books like OUT OF DARKNESS available to students… AS THEY SHOULD. These highly vetted & celebrated works of literature serve the needs of students. (See "additional info" below.)

A reminder: in all cases, the books in question are options AVAILABLE to teens, not required course material. The only difference is that the districts denied funds (@LeanderISD & @RoundRockISD) have struggled with public controversies driven by politicized attacks on books.

And this comes AFTER @LeanderISD officially removed 11 books, including OUT OF DARKNESS, from HS book lists and classroom libraries. What is the commissioners' message? You didn't ban ENOUGH books to appease our base, so no $$ for your students.

https://pen.org/press-release/pen-america-calls-out-texas-school-district-after-banning-eleven-books/

Again: the opposition to the books is NOT ABOUT THE BOOKS. Conservative groups (links to follow) are using this to signal who matters in schools and whose very existence is "controversial"–just like the books under attack. That's a destructive message for marginalized teens.

"Concerned" adults at SB mtgs may have convinced themselves that they are worried about "sexually explicit content," but if that were true, they would be showing up to protest the many more books with sexual content that center white, straight characters. Hmm.

What's really going on, then? Knowingly or not, these parents are mouthpieces for GOP-funded orgs that direct them to harass and exhaust school personnel and attack books like OUT OF DARKNESS for quick wins to mobilize a conservative base. Some examples ahead.

No Left Turn categorizes books by "trouble" topics:
https://www.noleftturn.us/exposing-books/
Texans Wake Up goes a step farther by telling parents exactly what to object to, a letter to use, then "go get 'em!"

https://www.texanswakeup.com/

Moms 4 Liberty & Defending Ed encourage burdensome FOIA requests: https://defendinged.org/expose/
https://www.momsforliberty.org/resources/
(Targeted ISDs say these requests are relentless–& that those making them have the $$ to keep asking–targeting every purchase order, teacher survey, etc.)

Attacks on books & relentless FOIA requests divert resources away from student learning. The values & attitudes of those bringing them do not reflect the community at large. Most folks appreciate their schools are doing & are too busy trying to make ends meet to harass them.

Central Texas: these folks are holding your kids' education hostage. Even if you don't care about your kids' right to read OUT OF DARKNESS or the targeted books, you should care about the harm of these attacks. The endgame here is not the books. It's undermining public ed itself.

And when I say conservatives are "holding your kids' education hostage," this is NOT A METAPHOR. I just got access to this email from commissioner @cynthialong to @LeanderISD, & it could be summarized as "Ban Books for Bucks."

It's extortion, plain & simple.

Letter from Cynthia Long demanding banning of 11 books from Leander ISD (full text to be made available ASAP)

That should be @CLongTX 👆 Thanks for helping me catch that, @LISDFuss

"Good" news: you (yes, YOU!) can push back. Take 4 minutes to file a complaint against the Williamson County Commission for misuse of CARES Act funds, & spread the word. This concerns EVERY taxpayer, EVERY community member.
