Days of intense heat have killed thousands of cattle in Kansas

Intense heat that baked Kansas over the weekend is being blamed for killing thousands of cattle — a toll documented in striking images on social media.
“The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is aware of at least 2,000 cattle deaths that occurred in the southwest part of Kansas,” Matt Lara, the agency’s communications director, told NPR on Thursday.
Lara also confirmed conditions had made it “difficult for the cows to stay cool.”
In widely seen video footage, rows of carcasses are shown lined up along the edge of a farm field. State officials are blaming a heat wave that sent temperatures higher than 100 degrees.
The new losses come as farmers across the Great Plains region are already struggling to cope with drought and high winds, along with the increased threat of wildfires.
It’s hard to get a sense of the scale of the deaths
The figure from the state health and environment agency reflects only the losses at farms that asked for help in disposing of carcasses, suggesting the actual tally could be higher.
A spokesperson for the Kansas Department of Agriculture confirmed to NPR on Thursday that “several weather factors combined which led to heat stress for cattle that impacted cattle producers.”
But the representative also noted that cattle ranches aren’t required to report those losses, “so we don’t have any data about the extent of the impact.”
Dangerous weather conditions aren’t confined to any one county in Kansas, where beef cattle dominates the agriculture sector, making it one of the main cattle-producing U.S. states.
Nearly the entire western half of Kansas is currently classified as abnormally dry or in a drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor website.
Heat blasted from under 80 degrees to more than 104
To get a sense of what the animals were dealing with, it helps to look at the weather’s recent whipsaw effect.
Temperatures rapidly spiked in Kansas in the past week, blasting past 100 degrees. Some of the worst heat struck Haskell County in the southwest. In recent years, it’s been the top cattle-producing county in Kansas, with 385,000 head of cattle reported in 2021.
In Haskell County, the heat rocketed from a moderate high of 79.9 degrees on June 9 to a scalding 101.1 degrees just two days later. Then came three more days of triple-digit highs that topped out at more than 104 degrees, according to weather data from Kansas State University.
Conditions also became very dry in Haskell, with relative humidity falling from nearly 80% to less than 24%, with zero precipitation over a seven-day stretch. The baking heat was inescapable: even four inches beneath the soil’s surface, the temperature reached nearly 92 degrees.
The animals would have been valued around $2,000 each
“It’s a significant impact,” Scarlett Hagins of the Kansas Livestock Association tells local TV station KAKE, adding that the market-ready value for each animal would have been around $2,000.
“Any kind of animal loss is significant to a producer, to cattle feeder, to a rancher. No one wants to see any kind of loss like this,” she said.
The industry website AG Daily lists ways cattle producers can lessen the risk to their animals, from ensuring they have enough water, space and shade to watching for signs of heat stress, such as protruding tongues and heavy breathing.
“Fat cattle, those who still are carrying some of their summer hair, and cattle who have suffered respiratory illness are the most susceptible to heat stress,” the site states.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is now allowing healthcare providers — including pediatricians and children’s hospitals — to order COVID-19 vaccines from a federal program for children between six months and 5 years old, a reversal from earlier this week when providers were prevented from pre-ordering doses.
The DeSantis administration is pushing back aggressively against the notion that its position has changed, with a spokesperson from the Florida Department of Health telling McClatchy that it never planned on preventing private healthcare providers from ordering doses.

I would like to explain something happening with me.
Hello Playtime viewers, thank you so much for being here. I want to tell you something that is going on with me and hope it helps you understand why sometimes lately it is more than my pain levels that is causing me to go to bed and why I am not able to quickly answer comments.
Right up front it seems my pancreas is not producing insulin at any real sufficient amount anymore. The pills I have taken for years do not really work anymore. This is not due to diet, but due to the fact that to help me be able to calm the back muscle spasms and to handle the damage to my spine I have to take heavy steroid injections. Oh yes if I could get out and weight lift and exercise, I would be so ripped.
At the risk of irritating those that worry I share too much about my own life let me tell you about my day and the blood sugar issue I endured.
I got up with Ron, we try to get up together, since there is no way we can go to bed together. Yes, it is silly but it means something to us, and we try to do it. We started our day. I am trying hard to restrict my caloric intake, I have a very sit on my ass lifestyle, I do not need a lot of calories. Plus groceries are expensive. Ron likes to push food on me, because he is a loving spouse.
Fast forward to lunch, he had breakfast, I did not. I took my blood sugar and it was low so the insulin required was only 4 units. He made me a salad which I try to have at least once a day often twice, my salad is lettuce, mushrooms, carrot shavings, crotons, and if we have them hardboiled egg white parts. (side note if I get hungry for breakfast I try to have three or four hard boiled eggs with nothing else, this diet has reduced my waist and belly size amazingly) he made me one roast beef with white cheddar cheese & mustard sandwich. Don’t worry, this will become more important in a few minutes. I promise. So after I ate that I was still hungry so Ron made me another sandwich. Then craving salt, I had the last few crumbs of Lays chips we had in the house (we decided not to have them as Ron is the same with chips that I am with sweets, if they are in the house we will eat them no matter how bad for us so now we don’t have them in the house)
We both went for a nap, we both get tired after eating and normally take a nap in the early afternoon. I think it is more an excuse to lay down with each other than sleep but we do it most days. But I couldn’t sleep. So I got up, but as I got hotter and hotter, my thoughts got more confused. When Ron got up I complained to him how hot I was and that I was struggling to think. He knew something was wrong and told me it was not that hot in the house. He had me take my blood sugar and yes it was very high. This was hours after lunch. He had me take more insulin to cover it. I was up in the 400 territory. I took the insulin he told me and within ten minutes I felt better and could think more clearly. It seems my pancreas is not producing insulin even with my pill medication. My endocrinologist was worried about this because of the steroids I need. He tells me that pills wont lower blood sugar if you are taking steroids. That is why he put me on insulin along with my pills. It seems that as the steroids increase the pills have less effect. I think I will soon have to go on a regiment of insulin that at I worry is going to be very expensive. So that is my day. Earlier I was foggy in my thinking, now at 6 PM I feel clear headed. Ron has so much mental degradation in his family he is terrified of it, and I admit when my thoughts get foggy due to blood sugar it is scary for me. One of the things I love most is my ability to reason, but when my blood sugar is out of whack it is like walking through waist high water and trying to run. You cannot do it well. Any way I just wanted to keep you grand viewers what is going on with me. Hugs

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday railed against providing Covid-19 vaccines to young children, saying Florida will not provide state programs to administer vaccinations for toddlers or infants.
DeSantis, speaking at a press conference in Miami, said that Covid-19 vaccines have not gone through enough testing and clinical trials to determine that they are effective and added that kids are least likely to suffer serious health consequences from Covid.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Mayo Clinic have emphasized that the Covid-19 vaccine is safe and has urged the public to get the shot to protect against the virus and prevent serious symptoms.
“I would say we are affirmatively against the Covid vaccine for young kids,” DeSantis said. “These are the people who have zero risk of getting anything.”
Florida is the only state in the nation not to order fresh doses of the vaccine for children ahead of Wednesday’s decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to allow two Covid vaccines to be administered to children under 5 years old. The approval fast tracks the vaccine for distribution and kids could start receiving shots as soon as Tuesday.
DeSantis told reporters that the FDA board made its decision to pacify parent’s fears about the virus.
“To do an emergency-use authorization for a six month old or a one year old simply to placate anxiety, that’s not the standard when you’re doing this,” DeSantis said, adding those fears were stoked by the media.
The Florida Department of Health, which is overseen by DeSantis’ office, issued a statement Wednesday saying it did not place an order with the federal government for the vaccine doses because it did not advise that all children become vaccinated.
The state Department of Health is headed by state Surgeon General Joe Ladapo, who is an outspoken critic of the vaccine. He previously said he opposes the use of the vaccine on young kids and has questioned the effectiveness and safety of vaccines.
DeSantis on Thursday also stressed that the state’s decision not to seek help from the federal government to distribute doses earmarked for kids does not mean the state has banned use of the vaccine.
“You are free to choose — that’s not the issue,” he said.

It’s heartbreaking to see many of the headstones with the names of many young children from the same family. They died at very early ages, from diphtheria, pertussis, rubella and many other diseases that are now preventable, thanks to vaccines.

Republicans used the “parents know best” line to pass the “Don’t say gay” bill, which banned instructions in K-3 public school classrooms about sexual orientation and gender identity. Wouldn’t bringing their child to a drag show qualify as parents exercising that autonomy? Republicans, your hypocrisy is showing.

An audio recording from a recent Moms for Liberty meeting in Cabot captures a group member musing about gunning down a school librarian over tension about what books are appropriate for young readers. The person who captured that audio at a June 9 meeting at Crossroads Cafe in Cabot asked to remain anonymous.
The person said keeping audio records of public meetings is simply their normal practice, but that they decided to share this one because it was disturbing. The person confirmed the voice in the recording belongs to Melissa “Missy” Bosch, the leader of an anti-mask effort in the Cabot School District last year.

In the audio obtained by Media Matters, the chapter’s head of communications and media, Melissa “Missy” Bosch, complained about librarians in the district, saying, “I’m telling you, if I was — any mental issues, they would all be plowed down with a freaking gun by now.”
She was made aware of the recorded audio and took to Facebook falsely claiming it was “illegally recorded” and “illegally spliced.” It wasn’t — Arkansas is a one-party consent state and Media Matters has reviewed the original recording in full.
Bosch also threatened legal action in her post, claiming to know “some fantastic lawyers,” and she said her comments came while she was talking about “making librarians who make 85k a year answer to parents when we ask how sexually explicit books got into the library.”
Media Matters notes that the lawyer Bosch hired for her anti-mask lawsuit also represented…wait for it…Josh Duggar.
