CultureCow: Anti-LGBTQ legislation is making the rounds this Pride month, this documentary can help

I want to thank Ali for sending me the link for this article.   I find it to be well written and informative.   Ali also has a comment in the comment section which I will try to post but if you go to the link remember where this newspaper is located and be prepared for the hateful things said in the comment sections.   Some people are very proud of their ignorance and bigotry.    Hugs

Commentary by Devin McCue, Sumner Newscow — Happy Friday. On Monday, Louisiana became the 18th state to target children who just want to play sports without someone looking at their genitals.

The legislation is ironically named the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” despite the fact it does just the opposite. It expressly bans transgender students from participating on the correct sports teams because Republicans believe it gives them an unfair advantage.

Actually, the belief is that trans girls have that advantage because of their testosterone injections. Trans boys will still be allowed to play, but I imagine they’ll change their minds as soon as a trans boy starts winning enough matches/games.

Before going further, here are a few quick facts:

  1. Talent in sports varies as widely in the trans community as in the cis community and a person’s genetic makeup and internal and external reproductive anatomy are not useful indicators of athletic performance;
  2. There has never been a recorded instance of a trans person attacking someone in a bathroom or locker room and, in fact, are far more likely to be attacked by a cis person;
  3. No boy has ever subjected himself to the shameful ridicule and abuse that trans people suffer through for a competitive advantage in a sport;
  4. There are more than two biological sexes, so discriminating based on that completely ignores intersex people with more than two types of chromosomes;
  5. There wasn’t a single outwardly trans kid playing in Louisiana when this bill passed and that’s a common case with these sports bans.

Since it’s Pride month and these bills aren’t likely to go away until they’re declared unconstitutional, CultureCow is here to direct you to a Hulu original documentary called Changing the Game.

Changing the Game follows three high school athletes who happen to be trans and all the vitriol they have to endure from raving adults. The kids come from Texas, Connecticut, and New Hampshire and have wildly different upbringings, but one thing is consistent: they just want to compete.

Mack is from Texas and is forced to compete in the girls’ wrestling division despite transitioning far before that. This actually isn’t as uncommon as you’d believe, but Mack is a special case because he’s dominating. People complain that he has an unfair advantage and Mack agrees, but Texas’ shameful policies force him to compete in the competitions “aligned with his birth certificate.”

Andraya runs track in Connecticut under the appropriate girls’ division but suffers the same transphobia as Mack. Her state allows her to compete with her gender identity, but can’t force parents (whose kids are never concerned as they are) from making asses out of themselves.

Sarah Rose races in Nordic skiing in New Hampshire and receives some of the hate that her costars do, but to a lesser extent. Because she isn’t winning every race. Despite what conservatives would call “her competitive advantage,” Sarah Rose is a middling athlete like the vast majority of trans kids.

Changing the Game is an important documentary because it’s the first one that actually takes the issue from the kids’ point of view. Most people who support these draconian policies say they do so “to protect their children,” but never seem to care what the kids actually go through.

These athletes just want to compete like all the other kids, but they have to put up with fear-mongers and professional liars like Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan who are shameful enough to politicize their existence. What makes this film special though isn’t just the bravery these kids exhibit, but the human experiences they go through like every other teenager, whether that be love, parental relationships, or just growing up in general.

If you find yourself sympathetic to the idea that this is a left vs. right issue, you’ll also want to watch to observe Mack’s grandma. A gun-toting, Christian, Republican, police officer who hasn’t changed her mind on any issue, but still supports her grandson entirely. Be like her, and let kids play.

Unfortunately, Louisiana’s transphobic bill isn’t the only state legislation making the news.

A Texas GOP lawmaker plans to file legislation next session that would ban any event that includes drag-performers that minors could attend. This comes after years of conservative backlash to the immensely popular drag queen story hours and likely won’t pass.

Like in the above story, however, in these people’s quest to “protect the children,” no one seems to care what those children actually think.

Kids love drag story time and every queen and school or library that’s done it has raved about how fun and successful it was. The American Library Association even released an explicit statement in support of the practice, which included a list of resources for anyone hoping to bring it to their library.

Getting kids to read is the actual best way to protect them, but I guess if we did that, there’d stop being conservatives in a few decades…

People (*cough* homophobes *cough*) like to complain that drag shows are inappropriate because they can “corrupt” the children’s minds, but that doesn’t make any sense. Firstly, if your sexuality is so flimsy that it can waver after watching a grown man lip-sync to a Britney song, you probably just aren’t straight in the first place. And secondly, even if drag shows and story hours somehow turned kids gay (which they can’t because that’s stupid), so what?

Being gay is fun and nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe care less about who other people love and focus inward on why you’re so afraid that someone is more honest with themselves than you are.

And lastly, I can’t emphasize enough how small a deal drag is.

Personally, I don’t like drag that much. I love going if one of my friends is in the show, but other than that, it’s just not for me. And there are thousands and thousands of straight people who love drag yet somehow don’t come out gay. A straight drag queen even competed in RuPaul’s Drag Race recently.

This Texas lawmaker and anyone else getting so worked up over drag, should take a lesson from their kids: calm down, have some milk, and take a nap because you’re throwing an embarrassing hissy fit.

The Sumner Newscow continues to be the sports news and news asset that it’s always been. Everybody doesn’t like the same thing all the time, so since Culture Cow began, I’ve really appreciated it as a resource. Plus, it’s very well written, and I appreciate that.

I also appreciate the courage you and the Newscow show in posting features about issues that shouldn’t be contentious, but somehow are. I’m a Free Mom Hug giver and an ally, and I can’t wait to watch “Changing The Game.”

AOC takes on Lauren Boebert in must-see takedown

Lauren Boebert Prays For President Biden’s Death

Is this the idea of what prayer should be?  Is this the meaning of being a Christian?  I know that some decent good people are Christians or believe the Christian faith, how do they feel about this hijacking of their religion into a tool of complete hate and used to harm others.  As for lifelong faith the fact is Biden has shown his dedication to his faith all his life, and Boebert has only used her professed faith as an attack tool.    When Muslims are accused of a crime the US media demand that the other Muslims stand up and denounce the bad ones.  Will Christians do that with members of their own religion?     Hugs

Newsweek reports:

A video of Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert saying she prays that President Joe Biden’s days are few has gone viral on social media.

Speaking on Saturday at the Charis Christian Center Family Camp Meeting in Colorado, where she was a guest speaker, the Republican politician referred to bible verse Psalms 109:8 as she spoke about the 79-year-old Biden, much to the delight of the crowd.

“I do want you to know that I pray for our president,” Boebert said. “Psalm 109:8 says, ‘May his days be few and another take his office.’ Loud cheers can then be heard from the crowd and Boebert takes a pause and smiles before saying “Hallelujah”.

Read the full article.

Longtime JMG readers will recall that Psalm 109, known as an “imprecatory prayer,” was regularly used by Christians against President Obama.

The Christian site Got Questions notes that such prayers are meant to “invoke evil upon or curse one’s enemies.”

Psalm 109 reads, in part:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor. Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.

Question for Fla. Republican senator: You OK with Proud Boys on Miami-Dade GOP exec committee?

https://www.local10.com/news/politics/2022/06/11/question-for-fla-republican-senator-you-ok-with-proud-boys-members-on-miami-dade-gop-exec-committee/

A former Republican lawmaker is calling for a former Republican senator and Miami-Dade Commissioner to take action to remove members of the far-right group Proud Boys from the Miami-Dade GOP Executive Committee.

Seven current or former Proud Boys are members of the Miami-Dade GOP Executive Committee.

J.C. Planas, a former Republican lawmaker, tweeted Friday. “I publicly call on my friend Sen. Rene Garcia to remove all Proud Boys from the Miami-Dade County Republican Executive Committee.”

“It is to the benefit of the Republican party and to the benefit of America that these extremist elements are excised from the Republican party,” Planas said.

Garcia, the local GOP Chairman, didn’t call Local 10 News back Friday about the Proud Boys membership.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio was at a joint appearance with Republican Senator Rick Scott in Doral Friday.

We asked Rubio if he was OK with Proud Boys serving on the Miami-Dade GOP committee.

“Well, when you ask me about the Communists and Socialists that are part of the local Democratic party, then we can talk about members of the Republican party.”

It was also an opportunity to query both about what they thought of Thursday’s prime-time hearing on the Jan. 6 Insurrection.

“I didn’t watch it, it’s a joke. If somebody committed a crime on Jan. 6, the justice department should charge them and that’s what’s happening now,” Rubio said.

Scott noted the committee hired a network news executive to make it good TV.

“This is a complete charade produced by an ABC reporter for TV. It’s like reality TV,” Scott said.

It was reality television, but for real and true. Documentary footage showed Proud Boys ominously marching on the mall and Henry “Enrique” Tarrio of Miami, the former national chairman of Proud Boys secretly meeting with Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government militia group, before the assault.

So because some Democrats describe themselves as Socialists, it’s ok for the Miami republican party to be run by white nationalist thugs.
Great stuff.

Texas Parents Reported For Child Abuse For Loving Their Transgender Son

A Texas transgender teen was admitted to a hospital after a suicide attempt, and instead of treating him with the proper care, the hospital reported his parents to the state government for child abuse. The teen, Antonio, even cited Greg Abbott’s anti-trans laws as a factor in his suicide attempt, in addition to bullying from classmates who were galvanized by Abbott’s and the Republican’s transphobic rhetoric. Cenk Uygur, Jayar Jackson, and Jessica Burbank discuss on The Young Turks.

“On Wednesday, the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal filed a lawsuit on behalf of three families challenging Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s recent call for the state’s Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate parents who provide gender-affirming healthcare to transgender kids, and to block the state from investigating members of PFLAG.

The lawsuit cites a particularly disturbing case in which a transgender boy whose family was reported to the state’s DFPS by hospital staff after he was admitted for attempting suicide after he took a bottle of aspirin.

According to the lawsuit, 16-year-old Antonio Voe “said that the political environment, including Abbott’s Letter, and being misgendered at school, led him to take these actions.”

When hospital staff learned he had been receiving hormone therapy, they reported his family to the DFPS.”

New Jersey Man Pleads Guilty To Selling Pesticides He Marketed As COVID Preventives, Faces Up To 20 Years

From the Justice Department:

A New Jersey man pleaded guilty to various charges stemming from his sale of more than $2.7 million worth of various unregistered pesticides to numerous victims based on false representations that these products were registered pesticides with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and on EPA’s “List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2” that EPA deemed to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 (Coronavirus).

Paul Andrecola, 63, of Maple Shade, New Jersey, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Robert B. Kugler in Camden federal court to an information charging him with one count of knowingly distributing or selling an unregistered pesticide in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), one count of wire fraud and one count of presenting false claims to the United States.

“Andrecola not only cheated dozens of people out of millions of dollars, but also endangered the health of those who relied on his fraudulent virucidal products,” said Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division. “The Department of Justice is committed to prosecuting such crimes to the fullest extent possible.”

Andrecola, who owns and operates three companies based in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, manufactured various disinfectant products, including liquids and wipes, under the brand name “GCLEAN.”

GCLEAN products were unregistered pesticides under FIFRA and none of the products were on EPA’s “List N of Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2.”

Rather, Andrecola placed another company’s EPA Registration Numbers on his company’s products, and falsely marketed that his products were EPA-approved to kill Coronavirus by creating numerous false documents to support his claims.

The count of illegal sale of an unregistered pesticide carries a statutory maximum prison sentence of one year, and a fine of up to $25,000.

The charge of wire fraud is punishable by a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and the count of false claims against the United States is punishable by a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison.

Both the charges of wire fraud and false claims against the United States are each also subject to fines of the greater of $250,000, twice the gross profits to Andrecola, or twice the gross loss suffered by the victims, whichever is greatest.

As part of the plea agreement, the defendant agreed to forfeit more than $2.7 million of the proceeds from the sale of the illegal product and to make full restitution for all losses resulting from his commission of the charged crimes.

Sentencing is October 11th.

We must save the children from dangerous drag queens! — GOP

Bob’s Your Uncle – BYU • 4 hours ago

Why would so many people trust him? Watch the video. Production values and grandfatherly actor speaking slowly and confidently like they do on Fox News.

He looks like the Hollywood stereotype of a good doctor: older, white male, white facial hair, articulate and well dressed and well groomed. surrounded by orderly clutter and talks at a level that a scientific illiterate can understand. Then paraphrase the usual grifter tropes:

My moisturizer is the best, believe me. The government doesn’t want you to have this because the doctors will make more money if you stay sick. Then he goes on to demonstrate that it is a product that is non-flammable and safe for the kids and grandkids, which has nothing to do with anti-viral efficacy. Anti-bacterial vs. anti-viral. Same difference, amirite?

Voila! if you look like an expert and don’t talk down to people who think their horse sense is just as good as your fancy degree, then they feel respected if you don’t use big words and can use memorable parlor tricks that look very science-y so that you can look smart when you explain it to your even dumber friends. It’s made in New Jersey, the mecca of scientists. Princeton is located there!.

Carlson Guest Calls Riot “Clear Hoax By The Feds”

Media Matters has the transcript:

DARREN BEATTIE (GUEST): There’s a reason that, people like us, when we talk about federal involvement in January 6th, it’s met with the most vicious and hostile response from the regime imaginable.

But no matter how dark and uncomfortable these truths are, the American people need to learn about them from themselves.

I encourage everyone, if you’re skeptical, if you’re not, if you know someone who is skeptical, go to revolver dot news right now.

Read our report and challenge others to do so as well and tell them to look you in the eye and say that the feds weren’t involved in this. It’s a clear hoax.

We know what’s happened but there’s unfinished business and we need to expose the feds for what they’ve done because, as I’ve said on your show before, until we bring the national security state to heel, our politics will be nothing but fake and performative.

Carlson: The Rioters Were Justified In Their Actions

“Above all, they lie about the reason that January 6th happened in the first place. And you know what it is — the entire country watched Joe Biden get what they claimed was 10 million more votes than Barack Obama himself.

“Joe Biden got 10 million more votes than Barack Obama got? And a lot of those votes arrived after the election.

“In a lot of places voting was stopped in the middle of the night. Why? In the biggest states in the country, voter ID was optional. Why is that okay?

“A lot of the protesters on January 6th were very upset about that, and they should have been. All of us should be.

“But the January 6th committee ignored all of that completely. Instead, on the basis of zero evidence, no evidence whatsoever, they blame the entire riot on white supremacy.” – Tucker Carlson, last night.

House Candidate: Execute Supporters Of LGBTQ Rights

Kyle Mantyla reports at Right Wing Watch:

Mark Burns, an unabashed Christian nationalist MAGA pastor who is running for Congress in South Carolina, declared that if he is elected, he will reinstate the House Un-American Activities Committee so that the government can “start executing people” guilty of treason.

Who does Burns believe is guilty of treason? Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham whose supposed crime is potentially supporting some gun control measures, and LGBTQ-supporting parents and teachers.

During an appearance on “The Stew Peters Show” Wednesday, Burns was asked by guest host Lauren Witzke what he would do to fight “LGBTQ indoctrination” if elected to Congress. Burns replied that the LGBTQ agenda represents “a national security threat” and therefore anyone promoting it is guilty of treason and should be executed.

Read the full article. There’s much more.

As you may recall, in 2016 Burns literally jumped out of his chair and fled a CNN interview after he was busted for lying about his military service and for lying about having a college degree. It must be what Jesus would want. Burns later claimed he was “attacked” by CNN because he’s a black man who supports Trump.

It’s becoming a new trend among the deplorables, saying all the horrible things they’ve always wanted to say. Here’s Pastor Dillon Awes of Stedfast Baptist Church in Watauga, TX, a suburb of Fort Worth, saying the quiet part out loud during a recent sermon:

“These people should be put to death. Every single homosexual in our country should be charged with a crime. The abomination of homosexuality that they have, they should be convicted in a lawful trial. They should be sentenced with death. They should be lined up against the wall and shot in the back of the head,” he said.

What, me worry? Elagabalus • 3 hours ago

We’re born this way, just as he was born black. Would he be OK with being executed because he was born black? It makes just as much sense. At any rate I hope he goes down in flames early. I’m sick of his crap. It’s really insulting to have a candidate for congress threatening to execute 70% of the population. Why is this even OK?
