Scientists Are Turning Mosquitoes “Trans” So They Can Fight Malaria

From gay polyamorous flamingos to a “half-male, half-female bird” sighting, Mother Nature has proven that she’s pretty damn queer. But sometimes, scientists like to get in on the fun, too. It turns out that some are even using their talents to engineer “trans” mosquitoes (yes, really).
On October 5, the X account @Rainmaker1973 shared a video of a female mosquito attempting to bite a human hand. However, its blood-sucking attempts are thwarted because its proboscis — aka its needle-like mouth — could not break through the skin.
“Using the CRISPR technique, it’s possible to genetically modify mosquitoes by disabling a gene in females, so that their proboscis turns male, making them unable to pierce human skin,” @Rainmaker1973 explained.
Before we go further, a quick science lesson: According to the National Human Genome Research Institute, Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, or CRISPR, is a technology that allows scientists to selectively modify DNA.
So why use this technology on mosquitoes? Well, malaria, which kills more than 600,000 people per year, is transmitted to humans by female mosquitoes belonging to the genus Anopheles, which, per the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, encompasses between 30 and 40 mosquito species. According to a 2018 study in the journal Nature Biotechnology, using CRISPR technology on female mosquitoes resulted in egg production reaching the point of “total population collapse” within 7 to 11 generations. In other words, this technique allows scientists to not only ensure that female mosquitoes carrying malaria can’t spread the disease to humans, but that they can’t reproduce in general. This CRISPR-enabled gene editing is just one of several techniques that researchers have used to fight the spread of malaria in humans.
So, sure, in a manner of speaking, scientists are doing their best to curb the spread of malaria by making some mosquitoes “trans.” In addition to being a genetic achievement, @Rainmaker1973’s viral video sharing the news also unsurprisingly inspired some excellent tweets. (see on the page)

The past few years have introduced no shortage of queer bugs, from fruit flies who were potentially turned gay by air pollution to cicadas who became hypersexual zombies after being infected with a sexually transmitted fungus. What’s a few more trans mosquitoes?

Bathroom problems for a man who looks like a woman. Plus some memes supporting trans people.
As I keep saying all these bathroom bills and trans people in the bathroom trash talk is the cis people who don’t look feminine or masculine enough for other people. I have read and watched videos of women who look mannish who get assaulted or harassed for going into the woman’s bathroom. One woman was a cancer survivor who lost all her hair due to treatment and two men were calling her horrific names and threatening to beat her up on video because they were sure she was a man. It all goes on looks for these people. Unless people are going to line up for a genital inspection by these gang thugs before entering the bathroom, how else do these maga think they are going to be able to tell? Oh and this post took me two days to put together. Hugs.

Stereo – a film about reversed gender stereotypes
I hope this short video means as much to others as it meant to me. Growing up gay meant I was different. Coming from an abusive family meant I had no support and it hurt my sexual identity even more as those abusing me used homophobic slurs against me, but they were the ones forcing me to submit to them. I have watched several videos of reverse gender stereotypes and sadly the ones that need to see it won’t and I doubt they would absorb the message if they were forced to view them. but it is important to understand the stereotypes are created to give the majority a feeling of security and normalcy as they try to force every child into the mold preset by their thinking that the child should be. Making mini me copies of the parents. That is not normal or how it should be. Each child is a new being and should be allowed to have the feelings and express themselves are they really know themselves to be. Openly and freely without repercussions and targeted harm. Not Losing You: a two minute PSA micro-movie supporting trans youth during the election
I admit I felt real emotion, I cried real tears as I watched this. I never had decent or even normal parents as anyone who reads this blog knows. But for a parent to apologize to a child shocks me and I love the idea. Parents can be wrong also and should be forgiven when they do admit it. My abusers never did. But to accept a child that is different is hard for some, they may not really understand. I have read so many stories of kids as young as 13 being kicked out of their homes to live on the street having to sell their body’s to survive. Far too many choose suicide. We need more of this to combat the shit red states are throwing out / doing calling it a culture war against woke. We need more of this to combat the religious assholes like Libs of TikTok who said it was OK for her to lie making trans / gay / drag queen people targets because lying was not against the law. Please spread this and help save more trans kids and help more parents find it in them to love their child more than their beliefs. Thanks. Hugs. Scottie
OK it has started, we are getting heavy rain and wind bands that will continue and get stronger until the hurricane Milton pass us inland. If it stays the course it is on, we will get the second tier wind / rain effects not the most drastic eye wall strength we got for over 8 hours during Ian. The storm is projected to hit at 1 or 2 overnight so we hopefully will be asleep. The storm is moving at 16 mph so it shouldn’t be over us long. Thanks for all those that reached out and sent support. Our home is very secure and we have the best roof that 17,000 dollars could provide. Ron reinforced the thinnest part of the roof with 4X4s because he was worried the inner pan roof was flexing. He built the carport with 6X6 posts and so many supports the house will go before the car port. Every window is boarded up. We have plenty of food and after the hurricane passes if we lose power the generator we have named the beast is ready to go. It has a surge power of 7,500 watts and ran stuff in our home and a neighbor’s after Ian. We only need it to run ours now. We have a hot plate and counter top microwave we can pull out and hook to the generator. We are in good shape, the best we could be. Hugs. Scottie
